Who has most miles on there 718? Any problems so far?

My 718 Boxster S manual has 2,790 miles. Took delivery 12/9/16. Zero problems so far. I drive it year round in northern Maine. I currently have my winter tiresicon on until probably about mid-May when the last of the cold and snow goes away. I'm curious as to how many daily driver and/or northern climate 718's are out there and how many of us in general use there cars as there main transportation?

1100 miles after 5 weeks. Only challenge for daily driving is the usual curb rash on wheels/tires.

I've got just over 3k miles on it (took delivery November 7th). I'm in Los Angeles and it is garaged at both home and work so a lot of the weather and road condition issues aren't too big of a concern for me (no snow, no salted roads etc.)

Haven't had any issues so far.

Re: Who has most miles on there 718? Any problems so far?

I got my 718 Boxster in July and now have 4725 miles on it. I had a 2014 981 and in every respect this car is so much more fun to drive. The acceleration at low RPM's is the nicest advance in the car because you use and feel it every time you drive. For those of you who are considering waiting to buy a used 718 in a few years, you should reconsider because you can't imagine the enjoyment you will be missing until you purchase one.

So I guess "this car" in your second sentence refers to the 718, not the 981, right? It sounds like that latter at first, but given that you then praise the acceleration at lower RPMs, I think you mean the 718.

By "reconsider" you mean consider to buy one now instead of the next few years, not reconsider buying one at all, yes?

Sorry for the wording. Yes I meant the 718 was far superior to me and by waiting to buy a used one you will be missing a lot of fun driving during the wait. Two aftermarket products I bought for my 718 Boxster was the Smart Top module so you can control the top operation with your remote and the T Design memory module which keeps the engine cutoff switch and sport button in the same position they are in when you shut off the engine when you start the car as on the 981. I got tired of turning off the engine cutoff feature every time I started the car.

Re: Who has most miles on there 718? Any problems so far?

Thanks for clarifying. And sounds good! I looked at some of the T-Design stuff before and found it at least worth a consideration, but the Smart Top mod is new to me and sounds pretty cool. Do mods like that void any warranty somehow?

Also, does this work with keyless entry? (Sorry for hijacking the thread!)

Re: Who has most miles on there 718? Any problems so far?

I don't think they do but for the smart top you can turn off the module easily before you take the car in for repair if it is in an area that it affects. It is also very easy to disconnect and take out of the car if you want to. For the Memory Module you have to take the console apart which isn't very hard but will take 15 to 20 minutes because you have to be so careful when you take off the trim that goes around the console. It is connected by 10 clips and is very flimsy so you have to be very very careful when you take it off. I put a screwdriver under each one and pried it up. You just can't take hold of it and pull it off. I am sure you will break it. Ask someone at your dealer if you are worried about warranty issues. Since they don't have anything to do with major cost items on the car I don't worry about them. To me they are both must have items on the car. If you like the engine shutting off when you stop then the memory module would not be worth buying. I kept forgetting to turn it off each time I started the car until I came to the first stop and the engine shut down and then I would hit the button.

Re: Who has most miles on there 718? Any problems so far?

I took delivery 2/26/17 of my Cayman 718 2017 and I've driven about 1,300 miles so far and there have been no problems. The proximity sensors said something was close to the car in the front when there was nothing on the ground and the car ahead of me was far ahead...so not sure what that was about. The reversing camera sometimes doesn't change back to the main infotainment screen when I change gears from reverse to drive for a while sometimes. That's about it.

Big problem. Took delivery 2/20/2017 of my Cayman S 718 2017 PDK and with less then 110 miles on the clock, experienced gearbox failure. Car back to dealers after two days. Comedy of errors commenced. Porsche sent new box within three days. Out put shafts did not match existing drive shafts. Porsche sent new shafts which are identical with the ones originally installed. They have now instructed to remove output shafts from damaged box etc. Considering clean up of contaminated cooling system, possible undetected damage of other components, I may refuse to accept repaired car and have been offered in exchange a New Boxter 718 S with slightly different spec. Failure probably due to coolant mix with gearbox oil, both fluids leaked underneath g;box. Is this experience exceptional or are PDK transmissions prone to such failures. Is the torque vectoring optional a must have. This is not available on the car offered as replacement.

Sorry I didn't answer your last question. I have keyless entry and start on my 718 Boxster and the Smart Top works fine. I also had it on my 2014 981 Boxster. You can open and close the top with 3 pushes of the unlock button on the remote, three pulls on the door handle and hitting ( not holding) the open/close button on the pedestal. I almost always get into the car with the top down and hit the close button as I get out and the top comes up as I am getting out. You still have to lock the car after getting out, but I generally just touch the door handle and it locks as the top is completing its closing.

Same mileage on mine. I sometimes get a weird proximity sensor warning at traffic lights. Usually it's a large SUV in front or at the side. Must be blocking light to the sensor! Reversing camera is apparently designed to stay on when going forward until you go over 5 mph. I suppose it's for reverse-and-forward maneuvering.

Torque vectoring also includes the LSD and would be considered a performance upgrade. If you drive aggressively on a lot of twisty roads, you would probably notice a difference between a car with PTV and one without. If you autocross or track, you would definitely notice a difference. In Canada, PTV is a $1510 option. If PTV and other additional options were on your original car and not on the replacement, I'd expect some sort of financial compensation (cash back, free service or parts).

At 1700 mi, got an "Engine Control Fault" warning (have posted elsewhere). Will update on what it is.

I only have 1500 miles so far, but I reported having condensation in my right rear tail light lens which occurred on a sunny day a day after a heavy rain. The dealer initially said they would replace the lens and I was waiting for the part to arrive.

Well, after a month and a half, I contacted the dealer to check on the status and now they're saying a light mist or fog appearing in the housing is normal for any of the light housings (although I think mine was slightly heavier than a light mist).

Ok, I'm glad to hear it. I haven't had a proximity sensor go off since that time, but looking back it, there was big SUV to the right and left of me, as well as a van in front of me. So maybe you're right. I didn't know about the reversing camera being active until forward movement at 5mph, so that's news to me!

I saw your post in the other thread. I hope your car will be ok. Keep us posted, I'm curious what that failure message is all about, too.

So my rear lights also get condensation as well, but I noticed this on all the 718 Boxsters and Caymen at my dealership when I took a look at them at night after they close up shop. So it's not surprising that my rear lights also have condensation as well. I don't think it's out of the ordinary. However, if this is a flaw then it's something that must be prevalent. If it's not supposed to be like that, then please let us know!

Also, completely unrelated to the above... There is loud rattling in the rear of my car when I drove over uneven pavement and highways, so I'll look into what it is. I talked to my dealer and they mentioned that you can just twist the rubber pads under the hatch door so that the metal bar on the bottom of the trunk and the locking mechanism on the rear hatchdoor won't contact each other as much and make the rattling noise. I have to go home and try this later.
