What's the best option for a 997?
Full cage or roll bar?
Bolt in or weld in?

Hey when you going to let that Cayman behind you in your avatar pass you by already? ;)

It depends on what you want to do, some swear by always having a cage at the track, others are fine with just a rollbar. I think bolting in is fine in most instances but for a dedicated track car go the extra mile and weld it in.

if you want the safest, then full weld in cage is safest on track. but it has other issues such as you would look like an idiot driving the car to dinner with roll cage in it and having to roll out of your car in your tux.

I have DAS rollbar with Brey Krausse weld on seat braces. Very pleased with the set up. Mounts securely to rear suspension points and front seat belt bolts - much stronger mounting than those that mount to floor.

Note the importance of adding the seat braces as implied by case referenced above where seat broke leading to drivers death - the purpose of the braces is to help prevent this type of result from a rear impact. http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/r9020.php

If you go the roll cage route, please contact your local SCCA club. They probably can give you the name of a couple of people who custom build full welded roll cages to SCCA specs. This means the cage will be built to withstand one hellacious crash and will be robust enough for the weight of your car. As the above poster mentioned, to have this on a street vehicle is about the most inconvenient option a person can add to a car. Ingress and egress is a nightmare. Forget the wife and girlfriend---you are now single and loving the track because no one will ride with you.

Please remember that a roll cage is a part of a complete safety system. The local SCCA person can help you with your decision.

I know that I would not add a cage or a roll bar to a street vehicle. Roll cage is too much and roll bar is too little.

A roll bar is substantially better than NO roll bar. It is certainly not a welded cage, but its much closer to a roll cage than nothing but an airbag. Plus a roll bar allows for the use of a proper racing harness. The idea that a roll bar with full harness are insignificant, is crazy.

At a DE event a roll bar/harness bar and harness system without a one piece racing seat led to a decapitated driver. The car went into the wall, rear first, at high speed. The seat broke and the harness bar took off his head. The same would happen with a roll cage without the seat.

Also, in a high speed rollover the roll bar will fail and the harnesses will hold the driver in place so the roof crushes his head/neck. If he is lucky he dies. If not, paralyzed. A SCCA certified roll cage will better prevent this type of injury.

In low/moderate speed accidents a regular DOT seat belt system is all a person needs. Racer boy wannabes are helping to force clubs to adopt more Draconian safety rules. Some clubs are mandating a cage, harness, and one piece seat, or nothing but the DOT original equipment. Some do not allow open cars of any kind.

I imagine club liabilty and driver stupidity will soon collide and the clubs sponsoring DE events will not accept any modified cars as they do not have the expertise to determine whether the cage, belts, etc., are certified and in service date.

Many times half safety modifications are more dangerous than none at all. I would not like to meet concrete at 100 mph with roll bar and harness pinning me into the car.
