Re: First Track Day with my Boxster Base PDK

    I really had a blast!

I hadn't driven on a track for over 10 years, so I put myself in the novice group and had the classroom instruction to refresh the basics. After that it was a couple of laps with the instructor driving and then I drove him for a couple more and then solo after that.

The rest of the day we did a 20 minute session every hour because there were three groups in total.

I used stock tire pressures and they didn't seem to rise to more than 38. The tires did start to feel a little greasy the last lap or two of a session.

The instructor suggested running the PDK in sport auto and focus on my driving instead of shifting. The PDK was simply amazing, downshifting aggressively on braking and hammering up shifts on acceleration. The tranny shifted so well, I didn't even pay attention as it was always in the right gear. The track was a fairly short technical one with lots of turns and only one decent straight on which was a pleasure to floor it and pound out perfect up shifts at the red line. My car would just get into 4th near the end of the straight and was showing about 175 kph (109 mph).

Engine oil temperatures peaked at 119 C (246 F). Ambient temperatures were about 85 F.

I was really impressed with the car. It was incredibly stable near the limits and you could feel the tires starting to let go. My previous Miata was a lot of fun, but much less capable. I overdid it a couple of times with too much throttle after the apex and the stability control took care of it. My Miata would probably have spun into the grass.

There were some 911s and a Cayman S in my group, and I was able to catch all except the Carrera S, not because of my car, but because I became absolutely fearless because of how the car responded. The other drivers were probably less aggressive than me.

The advanced group had some pretty hot cars there, a couple of 911 GT3 RS, 981 Cayman GT4, a few Carrera C4 and an Audi R8.

The highlight for me was the PDK allowing me too absolutely pound the car without fear and the engine unleashing that wonderful howl as it headed for the redline.

    I will do this again!

Re: First Track Day with my Boxster Base PDK

Glad you had a great time, and hopefully you will get much more enjoyment out of your Porsche. One other suggestion here. First get a good tire gauge such as a Longacre. Secondly, start checking your tire pressures when you come off the track cause that's what they will be the next time out when you are running hard laps. As you noticed, tires are greasy when too hot and have too much pressure in them. Most tires are more happy in the 34-36 range for max pressure, not 38-40 like some people can get up to. Let air out of your tires as soon as you get off the track to match your targeted high and then check it again before you start another session to get a better idea of what pressure to start out at. A novice may only have a 4 lbs increase during a session, while an instructor may see a 10 lbs increase. I check my pressures before, after, and sometimes during every session while at the track.

This one works well, great quality, reasonable price, and fits in the glovebox:

Longacre Standard Tire Gauge - 0-60 PSI
