I just setup my 981 with a BlueTrip and FiiO cable as well. I tried it with MOTO-G phone and also a Samsung. I can definitely confirm that the audio level is much lower than a CD [I used exact same MP3 file on both] and more importantly the audio quality is definitely lacking, especially the bass as you guys have reported. I'm not sure what I will do now, maybe just leave it as is, and stick to MP3 CD's for myself...and use the BlueTrip when my daughters want to take over with their phones.

Maybe one day I will get a PCM 3.1 head unit from eBay and get it swapped. I know that will require codes from Porsche and it's a pain but maybe that's the only thing that will make me happy.

Come one Porsche why did you have to make this so damn hard and expensive?

No, no, no! What you need to do now is to get one of those more expensive BT devices mentioned on last pages of this thread, and repeat the experiment! I personally can't hear any difference with my Bluetrip, especially with top down, but then I'm notoriously absent of any musical ear.

If yo going the swap way - it makes 100 times more sense to swap to Alpine unit, not to another Porsche crap. 10 times more functionality for 1/10 (or even less) of the price... There are a few threads here about that, it's very doable.

Thanks for that info. I will look into the Alpine unit that you say people have done.

Maybe the audio difference is more noticeable for me as I have the Bose upgrade in my car?

Yeah, I just have base audio.

Alpine can have 2 cameras, gps, and more for like $200 or something. + installation

I have the miccus receiver and it works fine but doesn't always connect automatically when turning on the car. Also, when there is no music playing, there is a loud hissing noise so I purchased a ground but it didn't help. I guess for the price paid it does enough....

Re: Bluetooth streaming with base audio - $40

Another recent problem I have is that, when I first had this setup my Google Maps will feed to my speakers via the Phone's bluetooth as a phone call. Now it goes by default to the Aux-In via the Bluetrip. Even if I forget the BlueTrip device, it doesn't seem to have voice instructions back into the speakers via Phone Bluetooth anymore.

I am exploring getting the higher end BT unit or an Alpine Deck. But looks like if I get the Alpine deck with Carplay I would need to get an Amp to bypass the factory one.

Keep in mind that if you're hearing lower sound, remember the Aux-IN has its own set of audio options seperate from the CD options for Bass/Treble/Volume. But overall, the Bluetrip does have lower sound, quality and I'm not even an audiophile!

Re: Bluetooth streaming with base audio - $40

This following is one of the best and simplest high fidelity solution for taking your music off an iPhone and playing it through your car, or for that matter a set of headphones or even plugged into your home stereo. First you can sign up for the Tidal music service. It is more expensive at $20 per month, but you get CD quality streaming which can be downloaded to your phone to be used offline. No streaming charges while driving...yeah. Any music you want any time and with CD quality sound not MP3. I much prefer the quality and fidelity of 1440K music vs a 256K song. Five and half time more information to listen to. Second, you need a lightening to usb adapter for the iPhone. Thirdly, you plug into an Audioquest Dragon Fly DAC (Black), and fourthly, you run a stereo mini adaptor to the Aux input. You have to control the music with your iPhone, but the inconvenience is worth the sound upgrade. Not quite as convenient as bluetooth but sounds much much better. I also have the original Audioquest Dragon Fly but the new one (Black) sounds noticeably better. There is a (Red) version, but not sure it is worth the extra money. All these parts can be had on amazon, and they sound great when hooked up. I have been using it in my Macan for the last few weeks with great success and enjoyment, and will try it soon in the Cayman when I get a six-foot stereo mini plug. For those with the audiophile ear, the difference between plugging the iPhone directly into the PCM and using this setup is not so subtle. The music is much richer, cleaner, with greater impact, and the bass is definitely tighter. The imaging improvements are phenomenal as you feel the vocals just floating between the speakers rather than coming from the doors and dash. Adding an Audioquest Jitterbug for another $50 is icing on the cake for those of us who are really into the quality of the music. Her are a few pictures for reference.

Bluetooth streaming with base audio - $40

I use the old istreamer from HRT in my car along with Tidal. Going to aux input. Charges my phone at the same time too. The DAC may be older but good enough. And yes it is better than BT streaming and USB Direct input. But since I have the full PCM, USB will charge and give me control of the tracks. I just prefer even better fidelity through aux

Lovetoturn, I happen to already have the new dragonfly and the jitterbug for my Mac. It never occurred to me to use the dragonfly in my Cayman. You do this using the lightening to USB camera adapter? NEVER knew you could stream audio this way. THANKS!!

Yes the istreamer is a good unit and I almost bought one, but then I got busy with life and did not come back to it. Already had a Dragonfly so I tried it with this little guy to make it work. The original two Dragonfly's draw too much voltage so the iPhone won't recognize them. If you hook up this "plugable" between the iPhone and the Dragonfly, it will trick the iPhone into working with the the Dragonfly as the iPhone sees the "plugable" at the lightening port and not the Dragonfly . It will drain your iPhone's battery faster than Apple wants, but it works. Sorry the picture rotates on its own as we have seen in the past.

The new Dragonfly (Black and Red) are designed to draw less power and work with the iPhones natively. Very simple to use and you can add a Jitterbug if you want. You can use them with your iPhone and a set of headphones on the plane or at home, plug it into any home stereo with the right cord, or in the car as described. It is just supremely portable. With the "plugable" unit you can plug the phone into one of the ports and then plug in a usb powered connection into the other port if you want to charge the phone at the same time.

We have morphed from a $40 bluetooth streaming device, to a $100-150 Arcam Miniblink, to a hardwired CD quality Audioquest Dragonfly and Jitterbug combo that rings in at $180. Still cheap as far Porsche options go, and at any rate still good value for your money with any option you chose here or what has been mentioned in this thread.

    Hope that helps Liquid360.

Bluetooth streaming with base audio - $40

I actually found another solution in the interim. The new Lightening to USB3 has a second lightening port with which to power from simultaneously and costs $39.

Re: Bluetooth streaming with base audio - $40

Been listening to it this morning and the audio quality is stellar!!!! So happy I found this thread as I'd never have thought of using Dragonfly in car. Here's the simple setup...

So liquid360 has the best solution for the older Dragonflys as noted above, and my photos previous to that work for the newer ones. Maybe a lightening extension cord and the adapter, dragonfly, and cords can be tucked away. Happy listening.

Does Anyone know the real difference between the Griffin BlueTrip VS iTrip?

I have been told that the iTrip is only for audio streaming an not for phone conversations.

I have a BlueTrip and am not 100% satisfied with the audio quality. I was wondering if the iTrip was any better for music? apt-X etc.

Nope. It looks like iTrip is an FM transmitter. Those are the worst sound quality by definition. If you are not satisfied - try one of the other solutions described on last pages of this thread. And tell us how is the difference!

Yes there is an iTrip FM Transmitter...but the one I am looking at is called "iTrip AUX", and looks exactly the same as the older BlueTrip [that I have] but it does not support Phone BlueTooth connectivity.
This one is meant for audio only and it supports apt-X. The old BlueTrip did not support apt-X. Since I am not thrilled with the sound quality of the BlueTrip, So I have just ordered an iTrip-AUX to see if it has better sound.

Will do. Received email that it was shipped a couple of days ago, but I'm in Canada so it will take a little longer.

I have not forgotten you. The guys I bought the new Griffin dongle from sent me another of the old "BlueTrip", which I already have!!

They refunded the money, minus the shipping costs but let me keep it.

So, I have ordered the updated "iTrip", this time directly from Griffin.....I am now waiting for it's arrival. My wife is wondering what the hell I am doing
