in-mirror display for backup camera - thoughts and questions

I just pulled the trigger on the backup camera and mirror display for my Boxster. I first wanted to install backup sensors with GTS diffuser, but the more I was thinking about it - the more I realized that if I do it - I better go all the way and do the camera install. I have kids, dog, bikes left in the driveway, and all that... blind backing up out of the garage is a leap of faith every time... Camera is really way to go. And since I currently have my bumper off for http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-b...hlight=refresh

    I ordered this

Amazon.com : Boyo VTM35M 3.5" OEM Style replacement mirror monitor : Vehicle Backup Cameras : Car Electronics

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The mirror is 1 inch wider, but it's no problem. I have no doubt that it's NOT going to fit on the 981 mirror mount, but by looking at it - I hope I can switch just mirrors if the ball is the same size, or came up with some adapter...

    My main three questions are

    1. What is the best way to setup the camera. There is two possibilities - tap the backup lights for power, so display will come up automatically every time I backup. That's how it's done on OEM installs. But I can also make a switch - so I can switch it on any time I want. Not sure how usefull that is. Or I can do a combo of both and tap backup light AND have a switch. But in this case I'm afraid my backup light will come up when I turn the switch on?

    2. Is it possible to tap backup light somewhere in the cabin instead of going all the way back to the rear bumper? Like fuse box?

    3. And then there is a puzzle of routing the wire from the rear of the boxster to the cabin. Do I go under the car? Do I go from trunk and through the engine compartment?

See my escorticon install in the articles section where I put in the sensor above the license plate and wired it into the the car and ran the wire up to near the fusebox. I recommend bringing the wire in through a grommet in the trunk.

When you do this PLEASE take lots of photos and do a DIY article for our members! Thanks in advance!

    Sure I'll make an article.

The thing is I have a Boxster, and bumper off so coming into the trunk is the easy part. Routing around the engine is the puzzle for now.

You will also lose your rain sensor (if equipped) if you have to swap out the mirror mount.

Re: in-mirror display for backup camera - thoughts and questions

You should try changing the mirror first before doing the wiring. I had to replace my mirror because some of the retaining ring plastic trim pieces that held the ball joint in place were broken and the mirror wouldn't stay up in place. I had to get the whole mirror assembly that included the slide clamp to the windshield. Unless they changed the way it was put together I'm not sure if the mirror ball can be released to use a different mirror.

Of course. From looking at it there is a ring there that holds the tabs that hold the ball. If I manage to remove that ring - I should be able to take mirror off the ball. Then it's the question if it's the same ball diameter with new one

Do you still have your bad mirror on hand?

Can't measure it since I pitched it after I epoxied the loose plastic tabs back into place and it still didn't hold the mirror in place.

Re: in-mirror display for backup camera - thoughts and questions

Whoohoo - it worked! The transplantation surgery is done! I removed the Porsche mirror, took out the post/ball part, then opened the display-mirror and transplanted porsche post/ball into it! Even the wires went nicely inside the post, so nothing is visible from outside.

I also ripped off one of the complex video connectors in the process, so had to spend two hours with soldering iron looking into the loop glass and into microscope(!) I borrowed from my daughter. Felt really like a brain surgeon. After that surgery, only one video inputs is working, but thankfully that's all I need!

I assembled camera and mirror together with 12v battery and it all worked like a charm!!!! I'm in business. Now I just need to route the video line all the way to the back...

Re: in-mirror display for backup camera - thoughts and questions

Installed the mirror and lead the wire into the fuse box. It took some time. Porsche trim is so tight and difficult to remove... But now that part is done. New mirror looks stock and if you don't know you'll never guess:

Size is pretty similar actually. I was afraid Porsche mirror is much smaller, but it isn't.
(Don't look at colors. My crappy phone flash makes everything look different, but in reality it's all just black)

My baby is all opened up and vulnerable at the moment. But I actually enjoy my little project. Keeps me from being bored, and I get to know my car better in the process. Porsche engineering is seriously awesome. And I actually can see where the engine is now:

Okay, the video cable from the rear has reached the fuse box today! It was actually not that hard at all. Much easier than I anticipated. It's totally stealth on the whole length.

Need to find wiring diagram for the rear backup light.

Oh, and did you guys know that there is second fuse box in the trunk?

    Hi T-Design,
I would be happy to see a few pics how you managed to get the video cable to the rear, and of course the wiring diagram

I wanna buy the same mirror, but I am not sure if I can do it by my own

The cable part was not difficult at all. Can be done in one night, with a few beers in between.

I entered the trunk through passenger side ventilation opening. The plastic vents frame with rubber flaps comes out easily and the wire can go in on the side and then plastic frames snaps back in. Or there are a couple of holes/rubber plugs that can be used. Going on the side of the vent is just easiest.

Then once you remove the trunk liner; put soft top in service position and bend out passenger side of engine lid liner - it all becomes pretty obvious. There are huge rectangular vents between trunk and the cabin. Look just above the yellow oil cap on the right

So the wire hugs the right side (in the picture above), goes into vent, then again hugs the right side, around the top lift mechanism and into the cabin, then down and under the door sill. I will go into more details in the article I'm going to write.

The transplantation surgery for a mirror post is a bitch! New mirror does not open easy, but breaks very easy And then it took me about two hours to snap the extra super tight spring ring back around the petals around the ball... Then I ripped the video cable when trying to squeeze it through the opening in the post. So it was not for the faint of heart... But I know how to do it now. And thinking about doing it for other people if there is interest. But it won't be cheap.

But having the real camera in the back is priceless:

Quality of picture is surprisingly excellent for not so expensive mirror. You can almost read the labels:

Nice! Someday they will allow us to have the all of the rear view by camera instead of mirror.

Thanks T-Design, so you did know option 1? (tap the backup lights for power, so display will come up automatically every time I backup)

Yes, that's what I did. The displays cames up automatically as soon as you put car in reverse gear. I'm still looking in the mirror when backing up, but now I actually can see what's going on behind me

I would just like to replace the mirror with an auto dimming piece. Is there power wires that I can splice into for 12V in the overhead map light area? Thanks

Yes, there are some power there, including, I think wiring for autodimming mirror. But I routed the wires to the fuse box, just to be sure.

Auto dimming wiring is not in mine. Remove dome light panel to verify (simply snaps out), there should be a yellow connector above it with nothing connected to it if there is.
