981 Catless Headers for street use - TX

Has anyone had issues passing TX State Inspection with Catless Race Headers? Doesn't the 981 have a secondary cat in the muffler to pass sniffer test?

I think the 987s or 997s had two converters (and I believe they were both in the headers), but the 981s only have the main one on the headers. Factory PSE at $2k is too cheap to have converters in them.

Re: 981 Catless Headers for street use - TX

    Redvoodoo55,

It's my understanding that the 981 has 2 sets of Cats, just like the 986 and 987 cars. The first set (incorporated as part of the stock exhaust manifold) includes sensors which help the engine ECM properly adjust the fuel/air mixture, and the secondary set of Cats is part of the exhaust system behind the first Cats where the car monitors the amount of pollutants that are being discharged by the engine / muffler system. If you were to install race headers w/out Cats, the system would likely throw a code indicating failure of the primary cats, and it would seem reasonable that the car would not pass TX inspection. However, I'm sure that other forum members with a better understanding can weigh in on this topic. That said, I'd probably invest in headers with sport cats and play it safe, especially if your car is a DD, like mine.

The 981 only has cats in the header body. The secondary cats are immediately behind the primaries in the same housing.
The sensors are before and after the primaries and just ahead of the secondaries.

Ok, so that means if I want to pass TX Inspection I would need to get headers with cats.

Headers with Sports cats will give you cat readiness and technicaly have everything, but may not pass physical inspection depending upon your state.
Don't sell your stock cats and you coukld switch back and forth if needed.

This is pretty much the jist of it. Some CARB-regulated states (CA & NY) require visual inspections which will sometimes flag any "non-OEM" emissions components. That being said, I have heard of some of my customers passing even the visual tests with our Sport Headers installed. (There is no guarantee, though.)

Since Texas is not currently a CARB state, you should have no problem running our Sport Headers which have high-flowing 200-cell HJS catalysts in them. These cats give you fantastic gains in both power and exhaust sound, but still allow you to pass most emissions tests with flying colors.

I passed with catless headers from Fabspeedicon, their race headers. Had the stage 2 Cobb tune on it to remove the engine light.

Crazy loud with my Borla Exhausticon, I have since removed the race headers.

Glad to hear you were able to get through emissions okay, nice to hear someone else say it haha. Bummer you had to take the Race Headers off, i'd have switched out the catback and kept that extra performance haha.
