Think like a GT4 -- rear spoiler disable

Well, I promised to report back after installing the ducktail and having the spoiler disabled.

Last week I brought the yellow car to the dealer, who said he could disable the spoiler. Left the shop in the afternoon and once I hit the open road, the spoiler came up. An email to my rep and a new appointment was made. Picked the yellow car up this evening and the spoiler doesn't move even after we were up to speed. Rep said they had to reprogram the computer "to think it was a GT4." I'm happy.

Pics to follow after the new wheels go on this weekend.....

Does any other function act like its a GT4 such as the logo in the PCM, etc at startup? Disabling the factory wing has been a mystery so far with all the guys that I have been dealing with. It was easy on the 987 as this was a simple choice using a PIWIS device, however no such function on the 981s.

I discussed possibly coding it as a GT4, and their concern was what other functions would possibly be negatively involved in doing this, or even bricking the ECU which they would assume no responsibility for if things went south

I wondered the same thing. While I joked with the rep about whether they also put in a 3.8 motor, I was curious if it reverted to the original engine management, kept the FVD tune, or now had GT4 engine management. Since my seat-of-the-pants test doesn't reveal much, I'm not sure I've ever know the answer.

Regardless, it shows Cayman S on both screens when it powers up. Not sure how they accomplished the task, but they did: it appears to be my Cayman S in ever regard except the wing does not rise. I did have to reset my seat memory.....

The tune being kept is the real Q. As I imagine with headers etc one would want a stage 2 tune. The only way to test would be to reinstall the tune and see if it affects the wing after. Or maybe they are orthogonal and won't conflict.

That could work, but since I couldn't tell a difference between pre- and post-tune when originally installed, it's not worth the "risk" to me that I'd have to have the wing re-deactivated after I completed the test. I could tell the difference when the headers were installed, but not tune. Of course, it is possible if I had done it in the opposite order, I might have felt a difference with the tune and none (or not so much) with the headers.....

I am having a Techart rear wing and front spoiler installed on my 2014 BS this week, did they remove your rear bumper cover and disconnect the power connection to your rear spoiler motor? Also, are those RW5 Roderick wheels on your car currently, I think they look great, course a little bias as I have them on my BS..........

No, they coded it to disable the wing -- to think it was a GT4 with no movable wing.

No, they're 21" CEC c884 but they are gone as the ride with 21" was too harsh for me. I have 19" version of the same wheels about to go on.....

I spoke with my Monterey Porsche dealership today and as I suspected they said they have never done this, and would get back to me, they called several hours later and said go to go, $125.00, next Wednesday......

Thanks for your help, I gave them Burlingames' info.....

We are talking 981s here, not the 987. There is an option in the menu on the 987 to disable wing. This does not exist on the 981, hence the reason you must resort to trickery of some sort like telling the car its a GT4 instead. Most dealerships have no idea how to do this it seems or are reluctant to do it.

Even Techart has instructions with their 981 wing to cut the actuator arm along with adding additional hardware. Cutting the arm alone isnt enough to prevent the warning because their is a hall sensor that looks for the wing to be deployed. There is an additional hardware hack that must also be added to fool the sensor that sets off the dash alarm into thinking the wing is still deploying. There would be no such reason for this more complicated mechanical and permanent hack in their kits if it was as easy as simply turning it off by coding. The GT4 didn't exist at the time, so their option was the only way to do it originally. I have the wing fuse pulled on mine which works fine, but just like cutting the arm, the sensor isnt seeing the wing deployed so I get the chime when crossing the 75mph mark.

A friend and me did the coding today and we used PIWIS 2 in developer mode. We did not code my friends CaymanS to a GT4. We coded a higher rear spoiler speed activation limit. Here´s the way we did it (Note: Developer mode language is german/no way to change it):

1. Select "BMC hinten" unit and switch to Codings Adaptions.

2. Select „Manuelle Codierung ohne MCR-Regeln (Entwicklung)“.

3. Search an select the following five parameters:
- „Spoiler-Parameter: GeschwSchwAusf1“,
- „Spoiler-Parameter: GeschwSchwAusf2“,
- „Spoiler-Parameter: GeschwSchwAusf3“
- „Spoiler-Parameter: SportPlusAusf“
and something like
- „erweiterte Spoilerparameter“ (I don‘t remeber the exact name, but there‘s only one focusing on the speed activation limit).

4. Then change the speed activation limit from (default 120km/h) to 250km/h. I guess higher speed activation limits will work too, but by coding to 300km/h first, we got an error message. 250km/h worked fine and there were no fault messages regarding the rear spoiler when driving higher speeds.
