    I want the sound symposer!

I would give my left arm for a sound symposer retrofit from the GTS. There is a real lack of intake woffle with the top down, especially with PSE in "go" mode. This really should be BJR's next project! Whaddya say Brian?

Are we sure that it has one? I read it in one place, but I wonder how it could fit?

I read it on Car and Driver's review and Top Gear's Review of both the Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS!

Re: I want the sound symposer!

I just looked on Porsche's site but could not find mention of a symposer for the GTS. Don't know where the mags are getting their info. Porsche does quote a lower ride height for the GTS but I suspect that is only because PASM is standard.

oh god no. Sound symposers are the worst, totally ruined the new M5 and M6 for me...theres nothing worse than not hearing your own motor...

    Sorry Patrick, not a chance.

With PSE and Fabspeedicon headers I have all the engine music I need. In some cases more than I need. With the missus in the car its PSE off all the time.

I'm a bit torn on the idea of this being "faking it". I mean... BMW is clearly faking it by piping fake sounds through speakers. I think that's ridiculous. But in this case, it's just allowing more of the sound through. It's actual engine noise though. It's like a PSE switch on the cabin insulation.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to actually confirm this exists on the GTS though. It would have a switch, right?

WTH. We need to fake it now. Where is that old "yikes" emoticon. No way IMHO.

Re: I want the sound symposer!

I don't know if a GTS has a sound symposer but before you wish for something, do you understand what you are wishing for (well except for KCZ who looked it up )?

Nothing is being "faked". There is no artificial sound. There is no "on/off" button. The valve opens when you hit the sport button.

The actual sound is intake and engine noises. There is a reason Porsche chose to allow engine noises inside the 911 cabin and not exhaust noise. It's the wail of the flat six that is unique and cherished, not muffler sounds. Otherwise, don't you think PAG would have allowed muffler noises into the cabin?

But be careful what you wish for. Some people hate the fact the sound is tied to the sport button. That means you can't just turn it on and off at will without turning off everything else the sport button does. And in the 991, the sport button does a lot more than turn on a valve (not sure about a 981). Further, the concept is polarizing.

One group of owners absolutely hate it and the first "mod" is to stuff a rag in into the pipe to muzzle the sound.

The other set of owners love it and rip out the insulating material around the pipe to allow MORE noise into the cabin.

    You can never please everyone.

I find it interesting but far too quiet. It's sophisticated and intoxicating engine and intake noise, not blaring and mind numbing, exhaust sounds. Personally, I'd leave it permanently on but other consumers hate it. Go read about the sound symposer on 6sp or rl.

Start at 6:10 of this video for real pictures and explanation from the engine, but it doesn't show the pipe into the cabin and insulation.

if the GTS has a sound imposer like that...I can live with noise being piped in. Thats fine because its the actual engine noise. but sending sound through the speakers is blasphemy

Yeah, its like taking the Toyota symbol off my 2001 Red MR2 Spyder and replacing it with a Stuttgart crest and calling it a Porsche. I don't think I'm into the sound sym "poser"

I wonder where they placed the valve. There doesn't seem to be a lot of room between the intake Y joint and the engine.

Re: I want the sound symposer!

I drove both a manual Cayman GTS and a manual 991 Carrera and I preferred the Cayman.
The Cayman felt faster and more agile, tossable, responsive than the 991, and the induction sound and exhaust note were incredible.
Whatever they have to increase the engine sounds works really well, even at regular city speeds.
It's too bad that the GTS is the only Cayman to get the sound symposer because it makes a big difference in sweet engine sound in the cabin.

Re: I want the sound symposer!

Well I drove the Mclaren MP4-12C which has one and it sounded so fake and hollow-y sounding. Kinda like the sound through a couple of old toilet rolls. Who ever in management thought that sounded good must have been off their trolley. Its not good.

2006 Cayman S has less sound insulation than later models. It has the best engine cabin sound of all Porsches IMHO. A lovely winding sound. I really miss that.
