Smile iPad mini Retina installed in 2014 Boxster *VIDEO + Pictures*

OK guys, here it is. Took me 75 hours off and on over 3 months to get this done, but it's finally complete and I absolutely, positively love it. Gives me 100X the functionality of the OEM system.

Besides having my full music library, plus Spotify and iTunes Radio and all of the other cool things, thanks to iMessage my text messages will also pop-up on the iPad simultaneously when they are received on my iPhone and I can respond to them from the iPad via Siri while driving.

And no, I don't lose any functionality not having the 7" OEM PCM display. Everything my 7" OEM display controlled can be controlled from the multifunction TFT display next to the tachometer with the stalk. Zero functionality lost. 100X functionality gained.

I think my favorite feature has to be the Dark Sky app though... it has super accurate weather radaricon down to a few feet and will provide a pop-up alert with tone 5 to 30 minutes ahead (I can set how much notice I want) of whenever it's going to rain at my location. So if I'm out and about, my car will tell me ahead of rain and I can get home before it starts raining or put the top up if it's down so a rain never catches me off-guard.

Also, the iPad talks to Garmin GLO GPS unit (wired into switched power via the fuse box so it's always on when the ignition is on) mounted at the front of the dashboard at the edge of the windshield via Bluetooth and what that does is give the iPad incredibly accurate GPS positioning. Whereas the iPad alone updates its GPS location once per second, the Garmin GLO allows the iPad to update its position 20X per second and give an accurate location down to 3 feet. So this iPad is even more accurate for GPS navigation than most OEM car nav systems.

I know some of you guys will want me to create a DIY tutorial and originally I was planning on doing that, but frankly I'm just not going to be able to. To create such a guide would take me countless hours (realistically, probably about 10 or 15 hours to go through all of the photos and write up all of the instructions and put it all together). It was a learn-as-I-went type install and there were numerous iterations of things. Had to cuts countless different pieces of trim and brackets so that the iPad would fit just so. It fits perfectly and everything is secured perfectly and everything functions perfectly, but it was an almost crazy amount of work. I thought it would take 6 or 10 hours going into it and it ended up taking 10X that long.

Looks great! Lots of functionality but my only concern would be constantly charging the iPad retina and iPhone whenever the ignition is turned on. You may want to swap out your OEM for an Insterstate (see Anyone upgrade their battery?) but even then, that's a lot of charging going on. Try to at least avoid having your phone in there. Other than that, great setup! I'm jealous

Don't see why it should be any problem when the engine is running. If you can power an air compressor off the 12V, I don't see why it can't handle charging an iPad mini and iPhone?

Wow! Sweet setup. Great work on the install. Very clean. I can't believe this isn't more common, considering How long the iPad has been on the market.

It can handle charging it, and will. You will inevitably decrease battery life though.

Simply outstanding. You are a talented guy! I assume you can pop the iPad out reasonably easily or does it take some work? Also, not an issue given that you live in California but I wonder if the iPad would work fine in colder climates? It was -23 celsius here yesterday (cold for Toronto but I just know that car electronics are "ruggedized" for extreme conditions).

    Anyway, really awesome work.

Nice install, but I find it pretty ironic that with all those distractions - including the one you've specifically called out: the ability to text while driving - the video ends with "Drive Responsibly".

You mentioned in a previous post needing to make friends with someone with an SUV! Well you can use mine at will if you do this to my 981!! (Won't be in SoCal for another two years, but hey... what the heck!)

    Thanks; appreciate that!

No need to ever remove the iPad. But should I need to, yes, I can pretty easily take it out in under 15 minutes.

Re the temp, you'd be surprised. People have taken iPads to the Antarctic and they have been fine in sub zero weather. The battery wears quicker, but they still work.

It ends with Drive Responsibility to point out the fact that I consciously considered that it's a distraction and I drive responsibility. My car also has ACC, which makes it significantly safer to text or Facebook while it's engaged on the highway. All I have to do is steer, so if the road is straight, it's pretty much on autopilot. If a car cuts in front of me and slows down, the car does all the braking needed.

Yes and yes. If you look closely you'll see LTE on the top. All new iPads are capable of that and there's at least 3G in pretty much all countries now.

On a side note, I can already see "installed iPad retina" in the Porsche Configurator... for $3000 oh Porsche. You and your options. At least they'll be getting rid of that useless, heavily outdated center-console computer.

That'd be a BARGIN! The iPad mini Retina alone costs almost $1,000 (I have the 128GB 4G model). And the infotainment package is that much anyway ($3k) and this iPad mini does 100X more than the infotainment software does!

Even if Porsche offered it as a $4,500 option, I think it'd be well worth it, considering the infotainment package, which really only gives you the navigation software, is over $3k by itself!

I'm normally not a fan of interior mods because they never look quite right. But this is truly outstanding. Well done!

I couldn't quite see how you activate the "home" button on the iPad. Does the plastic trim piece surrounding the iPad simply bend as you press it, thus pressing on the iPad's "home" button? I assume this is the part you had custom-made.

Beautifully done! Amazing! Looks better than OEM!

Not trying to ruin the admiration party........

One question: Porsche warranty? Could they give you a hard time if car were to develop an electrical glitch somewhere, not related to your install, but you know Porsche if they can snake themselves out of something, they will?

Again, you did an amazing job!

    Thanks!

Yes, we designed the bezel to have a tiny bump exactly where the home button on the iPad is and the left side of the bezel was designed to be 0.06" thinner to accomodate, so you can depress the bezel and it triggers the home button. It works better than I could of ever expected. The button press is super precise and feels exactly like a home button should.
