Bought a 2014 Cayman S and then drove it home 1000 miles.

So I made the decision last year that I was going to buy a Cayman in the spring. I have been keeping an eye on 987.2's and 981's to watch prices and see what is available. As mentioned before I was going to wait until the spring because I live in snowy Michigan, but a car came up in my search that was both in my price range and had the 2 options I really wanted (SC and PASM). I had to move on it and ended up putting a deposit down on the phone.

So I took a couple days off work, booked a flight from Michigan to South Carolina and bought the car.

    Details of the car:
    2014 Cayman S
    27,000 miles
    Manual
    Black with black interior
    20" Carrera wheels
    PASM
    Sport Chrono
    Bi-Xenon with PDLS
    Sport Design steering wheel
Premium Package with 14-way Power Sports Seats
Infotainment Package with BOSE surround sound

I drove 14 hours spread out over 2 days. 6 hours the first day and 8 hours the next. I snapped a pic every time I stopped to stretch my legs. Photos can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/HD2cT

The drive was very entertaining and I learned a lot about the car during our 14 hours together. My only complaints are that the door armrest is too stiff and the PCM froze when selecting satellite radio stations. There are some things I didn't figure out and had a few questions.

Is there a trick to getting the car in reverse? The other gear shifts are so satisfying and it feels like I have to force the car into reverse. Am I doing something wrong?

Can I get the car to resume my bluetooth audio when getting into the car? It seems to always revert back to the tuner.

I was trying to choose satellite radio stations from the station list but the station list kept freezing and getting stuck. It would take a little while for the system to catch back up. Can this be fixed with an update or something?

Can I just permanently leave my wipers in the automatic mode or should I move the stalk to "off" when the rain stops?

It appears that my windows have a slight tint to them. Is this from the factory or did the previous owner do this?

Where do you put your sunglasses? Am I going to have to buy one of those sunglass clips that go on the visor?

Can I put a square winter wheel/tire setup without messing up the stability control? I want smaller & thinner wheels with thinner tires without changing the outer diameter of the rear tires. Thinner tires work better in snow.

Can I change the background of the nav screen like I can on my Mustang?

The wing seems to go up around 75-76mph. It also seems to lower mpg's a bit. The problem is that I live in Michigan and our speed limits are being raised to 75mph. Will my wing always be up on the highway? Can this be changed?

    Sorry for all the questions!

I had a blast the last couple days! Thanks for looking!

Re: Bought a 2014 Cayman S and then drove it home 1000 miles.

Congratulations, great looking Cayman. Love the wheels.

Wing goes up @ 75 and down @ 50 mph. It does that to prevent your car from lifting in rear. Let it do its thing. It's not for show, and will show a warning if not deployed at speed. Leaving it up when parked (as in your pics), well, that is for show and better left for lesser cars...

Not sure what you mean by square tire/wheels.. I've always preferred round. And dedicated snows for cold temperatures. Summer rubber can crack at prolonged low temperatures, glad you made it home safely.

Sorry. Square as in all 4 wheels and tires are the same size as opposed to staggered that the cars come with stock and that will be used in the summer.

Can't answer any questions, but congrats on the car, and +1 on the wheels!

Welcome to the forum...great pics. I imagine you'll never manually deploy the spoiler except for that one pic you took and if you have intention to then please don't

    As for your questions:

Can I just permanently leave my wipers in the automatic mode or should I move the stalk to "off" when the rain stops? Yea you can leave it in auto mode. I don't know if your car is equipped with that. Also if it is its hard to tell on the stalk but I think it one click up from the bottom.

It appears that my windows have a slight tint to them. Is this from the factory or did the previous owner do this? Probably previous owner.

Where do you put your sunglasses? Am I going to have to buy one of those sunglass clips that go on the visor? In the center console OR in the inner side of the doors there is a rear compartment that folds out.

Can I put a square winter wheel/tire setup without messing up the stability control? I want smaller & thinner wheels with thinner tires without changing the outer diameter of the rear tires. Thinner tires work better in snow. Yes

Can I change the background of the nav screen like I can on my Mustang? Don't think so.

The wing seems to go up around 75-76mph. It also seems to lower mpg's a bit. The problem is that I live in Michigan and our speed limits are being raised to 75mph. Will my wing always be up on the highway? Can this be changed? It will go up and I'm surprised that it really affected your MPGs as I don't think it makes that much of an effect. Also how did you you measure this accurately? If anything this is one of the most fuel efficient cars I've owned (I have PDK) as I routinely get 30-31 MPG on highway (wing up) and mid 20s in the city with regular driving and maybe around 20mpg if a lot of traffic (and I always have the AC on 72, vented seats, and music)...

Re: Bought a 2014 Cayman S and then drove it home 1000 miles.

The cars come without tinted windows. Must have been done aftermarket.

The Cayman is excellent in the snow with the standard tire sizes (provided you have winter tiresicon). If the snow gets more than 5 or 6 inches deep, you are a plow anyhow.

Sunglasses - I got the holster from T-Design (site member). Works perfectly. Porsche Accessories and Mods - Phone Mount, Sunglass Holster, Sport Button Mod

If you find this, please let me know!!

It appears that my windows have a slight tint to them. Is this from the factory or did the previous owner do this?
Check along the edge of the glass if there is tint film.

Where do you put your sunglasses? Am I going to have to buy one of those sunglass clips that go on the visor?
I always have the drivers side cup holder out and us it. In your pic with the coke bottle you can slide the stem of glass in behind on the right side (even with a beverage there) and it stays in place.

Can I put a square winter wheel/tire setup without messing up the stability control? I want smaller & thinner wheels with thinner tires without changing the outer diameter of the rear tires. Thinner tires work better in snow?
You can get thinner wheels and maintain the total diameter of the wheel/tire by getting say 265/55/18 instead of a 265/40/18. Snow tires is the most important part.

Can I change the background of the nav screen like I can on my Mustang?
    No.

The wing is for stability, don't change it unless you want your rear end lifting up and sliding out unpredictably.

Don't listen to grandpa. Do whatever makes you happy.

IMO the car's silhouette is improved when the wing is up. It's not some screw-on massive wing on a Mirage. It's the factory spoiler seamlessly integrated into the lines of the car. I love how it looks with wing up.

First, congratulations! Second, Cincinnati chili? Really? (I live in Cincinnati Metro Area, but I am not from here)

I experienced the same thing. I drove 4 different Caymans for a total of 250-300 test drive miles and I still didn't fully understand what I got until I had about 1,000 miles on odo.

Nope, BMW and MINI are same way, too. There is detente that should prevent you from accidentally shifting into reverse when you want 1st gear, but no special lock you have to unlock like some other cars (push shifter down in VW, pull the ring up in Renault, Fiat ...). Needless to say, you have to pay attention. And don't get excited if someone behind you honks on green and you are not in first gear yet, it might be followed by honk! honk! hooooonk!!!. Don't ask how I know

    Enjoy your new car!

    Congrats on your purchase.

You will need to keep a stagger between front and rears. If they're "square" you will upset the PSM (not PASM).

If you purchased a sat radio subscription it should download an update to your radio, mine did. That should fix your problem. If you haven't purchased a subscription you are probably getting a sampler menu.

+1 on that. But the main reason I leave it up is less chances of it crapping out over time. By the way, the Boxster spoiler is almost flat, compared to the aggressive angle on the Cayman's. Guess the Boxster has less inherent rear lift, or Porsche wanted less downforce on that car for some reason. Wonder which one it is.

I'm curious, since you can't force the wing down after 75mph how would you know that you get better gas mileage with the wing down vs up at highway speeds?

Congrats on the best car in the world! And welcome to the club. Where in MI are you?

First of all - be very careful driving on performance tires in freezing temps. Even if roads are clear. If you planning on driving car in winter - get winter wheels ASAP. The narrower-tires story is not necessary true for modern winter tiresicon. Michelin suggests using exactly the same sizes.

Reverse is stiff, and suppose to be so, as there are no other way to distinct between 1st and reverse

There is no tint from the factory.

You can disconnect the wing mechanism, if you want it down all the time. Most people want it up all the time

And I can sure help you with sunglasses!

I will admit that I was just making wild accusations based on what I assume is higher drag. I can definitely hear the extra wind noise (drag) caused by the wing at highway speeds.

I just found some paperwork in the glovebox. I was looking over the 20k maintenance invoice and it cost the previous owner $1100!!! There were some absurd prices for things like windshield wipers and an oil change.

Can I just change my own oil, wipers, trans fluid and tell them to skip those steps? I will be doing HPDE's and will need to change fluids more often anyways.

You can pretty much skip the whole 20K maintenance... Just change oil and check air filters.

    Nitro805,

Congratulations on your new baby! I did much the same thing almost 2 years ago when I flew from Dallas to Atlanta to buy my 14 CS CPO. Of course, they wouldn't accept a down payment, I had to pay for the car in advance, but then, it only had 2580 miles on the car - was almost like buying a new car. But as you observed, one really does learn a lot about the car (on top of all the studying you may have previously completed) by jumping right in and driving it 1000 miles. Mine is a DD and I still love seeing it and driving it every day.

Yes, you can do your own maintenance. I keep track of mine in a spreadsheet to document what's been done. Some people want to see the work on Carfax or via dealer history, which you won't have if you do your own maintenance. I say so what.

    Have fun DEing your car.

It's irrelevant, since the car NEEDS the downforce for stability. And the difference from down before it pops up on its own to up all the time, probably negligible, since it doesn't start making a difference until higher speeds anyway. I've never heard the wing making noise, and doubt anybody else can with all the racket inside the cabin. And if you open a window even less. A non-issue IMO.
