    981 Sports Steering Wheel

I initially configured my 981 S as spartan as I could with the emphasis on performance and saftey options, and the sports steering wheel wasn't on my list. But then the sales manager invited me to look at a 991 with the standard steering wheel and then compare it to a 981 S with the sports steering wheel. So the sports steering wheel is now on my list. The standard wheel is just too plain and small in diameter to suit my tastes.

If there are any of you who haven't finalized your 981 option list yet, I would recommend that you check the two steering wheels out before you decide.

I agree with checking them out. I sat in cars with the standard and sports steering wheels last week, and ended up changing my order from sports to standard just because the latter felt more comfortable to me.

    981 Sports Steering Wheel

I wanted the sport but as we also use the car as a daily driver we got the multi function instead as it makes it easier to make phone calls and adjust the stereo and all the gadgets like sports chrono and what you see on the dash

Still think the sports wheel looks better

Yah. Had it been an option I would have gotten a Sport with multi-function but I guess those are slightly diverging characteristics. Multi-function it is for me, being a daily driver it makes a lot more sense.

This option could be one I regret in the future. I went with the Sport Wheel for the better looks and sports car feel. My wife has a Cayenne and the multifunction wheel is nice and I've gotten used to using all of the controls. I'm pretty sure once the car gets here I won't worry too much about having to reach a bit for the controls!

I know this is purely subjective, but the sports steering wheel should be standard on all Porsches. I saw the standard wheel on a $110K 991, and to be brutally honest it looked like a steering wheel that you would see on a $25K Hyundai. You would think that Porsche would have a far better steering wheel on a $110K car.

I have to agree the wheel is a bit **** and looks out of place in the cabin

This just gives them something to change on the 981v2

    Re: 981 Sports Steering Wheel

After driving one with the sports wheel I opted for the multi function to get up and down shift from the pdk on both sides of the wheel. When turning it's nice to have shifters for both hand.

I've been saying that for some time now, but the buttons still seem to be the Rodney Dangerfield of shifters.

Can't argue with those who say the sport wheel is prettier, though.

It's the other way round for me. I want the multifunction but with the paddles.

It would be nice to have the Sports Design wheel with Multifunction buttons... Hope an upgrade like that will be available soon.

    Re: 981 Sports Steering Wheel

I picked my 981S out of the showroom so I didn't get a choice.
It's the standard wheel with paddle shifters.
Does anyone else find it difficult to hold in a comfortable manner?
If I hold it at 9 and 3 and place my thumbs over the paddle shifters, I feel like I have to grip down with my thumbs to hold the wheel. Feels like too much tension in my hands.
If I move them down lower so my thumbs are on the paddle shifters, my hands wants to slide off the wheel.
Only really comfortable position is at 10 and 2, a big no no.
    Something I'll get used to???

I have a sport steering wheel. There is a stalk that gives all the functionality of the multi-function wheel except volume control.

I prefer the stalk, I prefer the sports steering wheel, and I do volume control with the PCM volume knob.

    It works well for me.

    Re: 981 Sports Steering Wheel

I chose the sports steering wheel mostly for aesthetic reasons. It carries the lines across the dash - the standard wheel is just too plain.

My MT Amaranth Red / Luxor beige 981 was finished today(!!!), delivery early - mid March.

A student at the Driver Clinic had a 981S with multi-function steering wheel. I played with the buttons and I think it's too confusing, I like the stalk that came with Sport Design or normal steering wheel better.

Love my sport wheel. Once you get used to the stalk it's great. If you get PDK I think the sport wheel is a must.

I took a car for a test drive that had PDK and the standard wheel with the 2-direction slide buttons. I found that if I gripped the wheel firmly, I would somewhat easily but inadvertantly push the button rearward with my fingers, causing a downshift that I didn't want. That was the main reason I got the Sport Design wheel (with paddles) in conjunction with PDK.

No you won't. I have multifunction in all my other cars - and personally for me it's not a big deal at all. Manufacturers just keep pushing those things and now people think it's essential to have them. It's all in your mind. I actually enjoy clean look of sports steering wheel.

I guess it helps that I still remember how to use buttons on the dash, so I can survive without buttons on the wheel.

I'm with you, but it may just be a case of what I have gotten accustomed to. Automobile manufacturerers now offer all of these expensive gadgets on their cars that many young drivers feel are indispensible. For example I test drove an S5 last year and it had this park assist feature which the salesman was praising but which I felt was very annoying. If it ever comes to the time when I don't know where the front and rear bumpers and right and left fenders are on my car, then it's time to turn in my license.
