Can you lock the keys in one of the trunks?

Just wondering if the 981 has an auto-sense unlocking system like BMW. I'm guessing not since no comfort access type system, but with a BMW if you lock the key in the trunk by mistake it will automatically pop back open and the hazard lights will flash to alert you. Any tech like that with the 981, or if you lock your keys in the truck or frunk you're done for and have to call a locksmith to open the driver's door so you can pull the unlock button?

How would a locksmith even unlock the 981 since it doesn't have a door lock nub that you can push or pull on the inside?

Your post caused me to check my 981.

If the trunk (or, I assume the frunk) is unlocked, the door is unlocked as well. If one attempts to lock the car with the remote when the trunk is open, the doors will not lock until the trunk (or frunk) is then closed - at which point the "meep meep" locking signal will be heard.

The only way a key fob may be locked in the trunk is by placing it in the trunk and then locking the car with the other fob. One cannot lock both fobs in the trunk unless a third key is available for locking.

Good to know! Sounds like a smarter system than the Ford Mustang I rented from Hertz on a recent trip... locked the keys in the trunk after. Had locked the car, forgot something in the trunk, so I went back and popped just the trunk and ended up leaving the keys in the trunk when I closed the lid. Required a locksmith to come out, but my insurance covered the charge fully.

Good to know the 981 won't lock if the trunk or frunk is open. But, wait...what if you lock the car, then just open the trunk or frunk and then close it like I did with the Mustang? What happens then?

If you unlock the car with the remote then open the trunk/frunk without opening the door then leave the key inside the trunk/frunk and close the trunk/frunk, the car will lock the doors automatically in few seconds with the keys inside... That's the case with the 987.

No technology has yet been invented that can completely defeat human stupidity. And you can quote me on that.

Please STOP!

My head is starting to hurt - too much information. Next thing I know I'll be reading the owners manual for the first time. At my age, I just don't want to go there. Who knows where that would lead to.

Hmmmm.... I checked the manual. It seems to depend on whether the driver's door is closed: if the driver's door is closed, the car pre-locks and you can lock the key fob in the trunk.

I'll check this out on the car later. Some of you might have a false sense of security though!

Doesn't the horn beep when you lock with the FOB and something is open? I would think that would warn a prudent person not lay the keys down.

Wait, on a 981, do you get audible locking sounds always? If so, it there a clear difference between a warning MEEEP, and a regular meeep?

NOTE TO SELF: If you hear a loud "meeeeep" when you lock the doors, Thar be Dragons.

Start the engine and turn it off within 5 seconds. Get out, close the drivers door. Then open and close the passenger door. Then then hit the lock button on the fob and within 2 hours hit the unlock button on the fob. Then open the frunk. Walk around the car 3 times within 10 seconds (you may have to run) and close the frunk on the 3rd time around the car.
Then get in, turn the key to "on" and set the radio to 93.7 FM. Then get out, lock the car prior to closing the drivers door. Then close the drivers door. Close your eyes and click your heels together 3 times and say "there is no place like Nome". Your key will be gone. Your car will be locked. Works every time.
