Best Road You've Been On Without Your Cayman?

For me, it's the SR416 from Mercatle (Italy) to Tuoro, near Lake Trasimeno. Wow! It's about 10 km, two lanes, very lightly traveled and full of twisties and switch-backs and changes in elevation.

Just got back from Umbria. We rented an A Class Merc, which is a nice little car. But man I was dying for YellowBirdII! I made the drive through Tuoro several times mostly with passengers, but one morning I got up early and did it alone so I could really jump on the A Class. (Oxymoronic I know.) Anyway, it was a blast.

I actually spotted an Arctic Silver CS parked in Tuoro one day, but of course the camera was not in the car! I looked for the CS the morning I was alone, but it was not there. Friday morning, so the owner may have been off to work?

Anyway, SR 416 is a great road.

I can think of at least a dozen. They were all in the Alps, the Dolomites or the Pyrenees. I was on a motorcycle.

For a combination of scenery, excellent pavement, light traffic and high-speed sweepers the Pyrenees can not be beat!

For speed I pick the Autobahn between Austria and Munich. (I did about 140 MPH on a BMW R1100S!!!) (That's MPH . . . not KPH!)

A few Autobahn stretches in Germany, in an Opel roadster, were awesome.

There are a few switchback roads where I live in Banff, Canada, that were probably way too dangerous for me to be driving fast on, but it was a riot in my VW Jetta 1.8T.

So far no great roads in the Cayman, maybe in the Spring I will drive through the mountains.

The Grande Corniche above Monte Carlo and the Amalfi Drive south of Naples. 987f

Kangamangus Hwy in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

And Evan's Notch (113) off route 2 in Maine near the NH border. Lots of twisties and elevation changes, the tree-covered road keeps you guessing if you're going up or down the mountains. There's many frost heaves to keep it challenging. It's also a tight fitting two-lane road that can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

Well, all those roads sound great.

Here in Texas (where I am), this past weekend, I sure wish I had my CayS. The wife and I went to Fredericksburg, NE of Austin, TX, but the road from Fredericksburg to Enchanted Rock Park was perfect for the Cayman.

18 miles of two lanes, hilly, twisty, lightly travelled, road. Perfect!! The day was dry, hot, and partly cloudy. I was in my wife's Infinity G35 coupe, wishing I was driving the Cay...

Next time!

my all-time favorite has got to be pch 1 through big sur on the central california coast which, sad to say, i have not driven since a 1998 road trip from san diego to pebble beach in my recently-purchased boxster 986.

but more recently, in late may of this year, the day after taking delivery of my new cayman, i had to travel to the palm springs/indian wells area and, for the very first time, i decided to take i15 / 79 / 371 / 74 over the mountains and down into the desert.

the road was fantastic. the traffic extremely light. and the car - simply sensational!

addendum: guess i should have actually read the entire title for the topic of this thread. sorry for my mistake. [but not sad at all over experiencing the drive referenced above - its a great drive in any car that handles well]

In USA,

In northern New Mexico on US 64 from Tierra Amarilla to Taos.
or
In Arizona, on state 89 from Wickenburg to Prescott.

In Europa, anywhere in the Alpes, but I especially love Italy Autostrasse A12 along the northeastern coast from La Spezia to Genova.

ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!:D

Wickenburg to Prescott happens to be one of my planned drives. I got stuck coming down from Prescott a few weeks ago in my Land Rover, and had to take the back road down to Phoenix. (17 was closed). What a ride, even in the LR!

Not many good roads where im from, but I just watched the first episode of Top Gear season 10 and they have an absolutely beautiful road filmed in Italy! They were driving a GT3 RS, Gallardo Supperleggera, and some AM race car.. I recommend everyone to watch this!

For great fun over a long distance, my favorite is the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway combo in Virginia & N. Carolina. Front Royal, Charlottesville, Boone, Asheville and Cherokee may not quite compare with Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo, but it's still a fabulously beautiful route.

if any of you guys are in the Lake Garda area in Italy, check out the smaller roads on the east side of the lake.On one particular road full of twists and turns, numerous hairpins, tunnels,I drove flat out for an hour and never got higher than third gear,I stopped at the top to get my breath back and I swear my Cayman was smiling at me!!!:D

drove from Chicago to Gatlinburg, TN with my gf taking some really neat back country roads...in our A8 Sport...great ride, but would love to toss the Cayman thru those roads.

Anywhere in Corsica, the Alps, Pyrenees,... hell, make it W. Europe! Even flat countries like Holland have really twisted and narrow roads!:banana:

Here is Corsica

The road leading up to Mt. St. Helens, in Washington state. Very twisty with the added benefit of one of the worlds most awe inspiring sights when you reach the top. Unfortunately I was in a 1996 Ford Windstar - will the Lord ever forgive me? Probably still set a record time for that road in a minivan to this day!

Not done it with the cayman yet but with the motorcycle some year's back... Stilvser Joch (Stelvio Pass) in South Tirol... probably the best mountain pass in the world....
I've done Stelvio twice. I'm planning on doing it again this summer. I think it is definitely the best pass in the world.

The same week I crossed Stelvio I also crossed the Grossglockner Pass. A European Porsche Group was there. There must have had 100 cars in their group. The Porsches would give a space about every five cars to let the motorcycles pass. That was really cool.

bxtreme - Thanks for the Top Gear clip.

Helmut - Funny you should bring up the notion of a Euro Rock'n'Croc. Last month I was putting together a plan for a possible driving trip from Barcelona, over the Pyrenees to Carcassonne, then to Monaco, a visit to the Museo dell'Automobile in Turin, then into the Alps to Mont Blanc, the Rhone Valley and Andermatt before coming back to reality in Milan. Unfortunately, the pricing proved prohibitive - so I really had to come back to reality and scrap the whole thing. But it does show great minds think alike!

In response to the original post in this thread, the best road I've driven without the CS is found in my avatar - the mighty Nurburgring Nordschleife.

If you ever change your mind I can give you some great roads and one fantastic - brand new - hotel that is literally in the middle of nowhere. Their vineyard makes some of the best red wine that I have ever tasted. Carcasonne is fantastic!

As much time as I have spent in Germany I have never driven the Nurburgring. :( Maybe one of these days.

CA highway 58 from McKittrick to Santa Margarita. I drove this road returning from Las Vegas last year in an old BMW 325. It was 60+ miles of deserted twisty road. There were only a 2 or 3 cars in front of me the whole way and both pulled over to let me by. I might take this route on the way back from Croctoberfest.

High Point North Carolina. Near Furnitureland USA.

HUH?

Yep. I was driving a rented Chevrobuickmobile sedan. I came down a long hill toward a large intersection and decided a bit late that I would stop after seeing the yellow light. I touched the brakes a bit hard and the car went into a sideways slide, then did a 360 while I turned to my friend- mid spin- and said, "I didn't think they made cars without ABS anymore." No cars were around us luckily.

Tail of the Dragon on the TN/NC border. 318 turns in 11 miles (or something like that) on my Ducati. Can't wait to take the CS there soon. The entire area is a a lot of fun with twisty mountain roads and scenic sweepers. The Dragon section feels more like a race track than a road.

Next year it is off to Europe to tour around with my former college roomy and I am collecting many of the great roads mentioned here to experience when I am visiting.
