Help me Decide trade 987.2 for Macan S?

Posting on 987 forum instead of Macan forum because the sports car/spirited driving is more important than practicality to me and I'm curious what other current 987 owners would do.

Hi friends, I need some help deciding what to do. My wife is up for a new car, and we've been driving everything in the luxury compact segment. The most exciting option in the segment is obviously the Porsche Macan and my backup (safe) plan is a Q5. I have 3 cars currently, 14 Wrangler Rubicon, 14 Jeep Cherokee (the one i'm getting rid of), and an 09 987.2 Boxster S.

I was hoping to get away with payments in the 600 range on the new car for the wife if I keep 3 cars in the garage. But that isn't going to happen with a Macan, also if I get the Macan, I want the S. In order to get the Macan S comfortably, I probably need to temporarily reduce the garage to 2 cars. I have had the 987 for a few years now, and I'm ready for an upgrade at some point in the reasonably near future (maybe 6mo - 1yr) so that is on the horizon. At any rate, the question boils down to this:

What is a better garage:
14 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (satisfies my convertible needs)
16 Porsche Macan S (hopefully satisfies my spirited driving needs)
(possible 718 or Jag F Type within 1 year)

or

14 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
17 Audi Q5 2.0T
09 Porsche Boxster S (If I go this route, there is more cash leftover for this car, so maybe I get an upgrade to 911? or boxster Spyder)

So, is the new Macan S going to equal to or greater than the excitement of an 8 year old Boxster S? If so, I'll buy the Macan S, if not, I'm probably dropping down to the Q5.

My wife drives an Audi Q5, and she and I both love it. It is quiet and smooth, has plenty of power for this type of vehicle, great practical utility, and lots of cool features. The interior and controls are first rate, and the steering wheel is almost identical to my Cayman S Sport wheel. I couldn't be happier with it for what it is. I'm sure the Macan S is faster and handles better, but these and large boxy cars with a high CG - you'll never get the sports car feeling of a Cayman.

So if it were me, I'd go for your second option.

What is the definition of "excitement" to you? In a straight line, with the top down, the sound of the engine/exhaust, the presence on the road, the way it engages a corner.....?

Because if what you said in your first sentence is true, then there would be little reason for the consideration or even this thread. You are comparing a SUV with a convertible sports car. They are going to be good/great at different things.

The best garage would be the one that suits your needs the best, not mine or anyone elses.

I also don't see how the Macan S could fulfill the driving experience of your Boxster but if you think it can then go for it. It's really a subjective matter so it comes down to you and your wife's preferences. Since it's her car I'd let her chose amongst the Q5/Macan/Macan S.

Also have your driven the new 911? I always wanted a 911 Turbo but after driving the 991 with 4ws I'm in love. I now actually prefer the 911 handling over the MR cayman/box. If the wife is happy with the Q5 then I'd go with that and hopefully use the money you saved to buy something to replace the 987.

Megan S is JUST as good a sports experience as the Cayman .........

All you guys are right. I had fantasized a little too much about the drive quality of the Macan s. I had driven the Macan, and thought that if the base was that good that the S would be a million times better. It wasn't, the S was maybe 1.2 x better... my boxster s outdrives the Macan S all day long.

So, I'm buying the Audi and keeping the boxster. Thanks for the input guys.

Not to upset the apple cart, the wife and I looked and drove them all, the clear winner was the Macan S on 20" wheels with the standard suspension, we liked it better then the Q5 by a mile, the BMW or anything that was offered by the domestic dealers. The finish and layout of the interior of the Macan S is gorgeous and as a Porsche owner you will feel right at home. IMHO visually the Macan slays the competition!

She took delivery (her car) in January of this year so we have a lot of seat time, she lets me drive a lot so I have a good feel for how the Macan S handles (my car is the BGTS ;)) and although I will admit that the Boxster handles better, for 90% of highway and city driving the Macan S gives nothing up to it.

Opps, forgot to answer the original question, definitely a Boxster (the newer the better, a 981 S would be good) and a Macan S!

Porsche sports cars (old and new) are always head turners and maintains exclusivity to both enthusiasts and the masses while Porsche SUVs, just like all SUVs, are only when new and until next model arrives. That is my perception and maybe true.

for me 987 anything all day..I just sold a 6 month old Macan GTS for a Boxster Spyder and a BMW 3 series wagon..my spyder is a 987..I love it!! I also love the wagon..Prefer a wagon over any SUV..the Macan GTS was cool in the beginning and I tired with fast.I prefer to sit lower and feel like I am driving a car.Thats just me.This was my 1st and last SUV..Its cool and its fast and a Porsche but still sits too high to be a real driver (for me)
