To drive in the rain/wet or not?

So, Perhaps a silly question, but then perhaps not:

I am the proud owner of a '12 R. I live in the Pacific NW (Portland area) and our winters are relatively mild -- maybe a few days of snow, but mostly just rain. Roads are never salted, of course. My dilemma: store the car for the entire winter and do not allow it to get wet, or...driver Her in the rain? I've seen plenty of ads for older 911's where the seller claimed "never seen rain".

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    DJM

Drive it! It is a waste not to be on some of the twisty roads going from Portland to the coast on hwy 26.
I lived in lake Oswego for 2 years and drove my mustang like I stole it the whole time.
Just watch out for the red and blues.
    Good luck

Re: To drive in the rain/wet or not?

I love it when someone states "never seen rain". My first question to them is, "Did the dealer keep that car inside the entire time before deliver?" Right. I think you insult Mr Porsche if you don't drive it when ever, especially if you don't drive it with some exuberance, especially at a DE, autocross, or rally now and then. Porsche's concept of his first production car was to have a daily driver that you could take to track on a Friday, then drive it home and it would be ready for the next work week.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a trip up to Seattle today -- sorely tempted to take the R. She only have 1200 miles on her an needs the break in miles. Roads are wet and it is cold out, but I will be driving mid day, should be ok.

    Cheers,

The weather this past weekend dumped a lot of rain in the area. The early morning commute was soaked this morning too. However, I observed a Carrera 4S, base Carrera, and Carrera S Cabriolet effortlessly navigate the roads. They looked fine.

Re: To drive in the rain/wet or not?

My issue is not the rain, it is road temperature. I had stored my car then had the insurance company reactivate normal coverage as December was so mild and dry here. I'm leery of going out when the temperature is in the 30's...but in the 40's and above I have no issues - rain or shine. Right now, after the recent snow, the roads are still covered in a lot of sand and salt...I'm going to let it rain a few more days before I take it out again.

Bottom line...I'm with the rain or shine camp. Give's me an excuse to wash it

Re: To drive in the rain/wet or not?

I am guilty of not driving my 08 Cayman S in the rain. I usually own one car that does not see a drop of rain and for now it's my Cayman S. Most people think I am anal but I know for sure that I am. If you think I am not then listen to what happened today. My Fiat 500 Cabrio is in for service and I have a loaner. When I got out of the loaner last night I left the key in the cup holder. When I went to use the car this morning the doors were locked. Since this is a loaner I don't have a spare set of keys. So off the the dealer in my Cayman S in the pouring rain to get the second set of keys. Upon returning home, I actually washed my Cayman S in the rain and then pulled it into the garage to dry it. Am I crazy or what?

So, I got caught in a little rain in the R -- just a sprinkle. But I hit some road that were wet, so I got spray on the car. As I got home the rain picked up a touch and, yes, just like you, I washed Her in the rain! Also, my poor wife almost fell over: she has now seen me use the vacuum on multiple occasions! :-)

    Cheers,

Re: To drive in the rain/wet or not?

Drive it! The only person that "benefits" from a car never being in the rain is the next owner. And unless they are concours nuts, it really is irrelevant to them as well, they just like to brag about it.

Although I will admit, that I am guilty of shying away from driving in the rain if I have just washed the car.............

And even my wife laughs when we watch the "Ultimate Factory" shows and they talk all about the paint process and the perfect finish. Then, the car gets delivered to the dealer and it immediately sits outside, then when the dealer preps it for delivery they ruin the paint before you ever leave the lot.

Not only do I drive mine in the rain, I love taking it to the track in the rain. Other than a little rain coming in the windows, it's brilliant.

Track days in the rain, fantastic, eh Amdeutsch?

I live on the Wet Coast too, I drive it every day in a spirited fashion. I'm heading to Seattle Thursday, shouldn't take me too long

As you live in Portland you really ought to get a 9500ciicon detector/jammer, I swear there are more cops than motorists.

Whenever I drive my Cayman in the rain it makes me think of Steve McQueen's "LE Mans". God I love driving a Porsche in the rain.

Yeah, we pretty much have the track to ourselves during sessions when it's raining. I think it is good practice too - teaches you to be smoooooth.

I met a guy that said he had never once driven his car in the rain. Sounded silly to me. It's yucky outside and I don't like the salt like Singletrack said, but I plan on driving in any weather.

Re: To drive in the rain/wet or not?

Spend a little time in Germany and you see they drive these cars in ALL weather. A good friend in Munich has a Cayenne, a 911 Cab 4S and a GT3, they all get wet, the GT3 never sees snow - you can guess why

Drive it, a lot of Engineers spent a lot of time figuring out how to make these cars deliver in rain, snow or sunshine!!!!

Not at all....I often wash my car in the rain. Then pull it into the garage, dry and detail. Frankly, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone

BTW - your car looks fabulous....and you know, it is better to look good, than to feel good.... ;-)
