That is a great story. Rolex watches are a funny subject.

There are so many slight variations within a line of watches that deviations are often mistaken by "experts" as an indication that it is a forgery. The only way you can really tell is if you open up the case and look at the movement.

Re: Fake Rolex for the Daytona winner?

The one thing that makes me wonder about this story is that I had understood that the watches for the winners were engraved on the back.

I know the Rolex that at least one of the drivers of the 59 received for winning the Grand Am championship in 2011 is engraved. I saw it when he let me put it on................ Yes, I was tackey enough to ask him to let me, but I have known him for a long time.

Maybe it is something that is done later for the race winners, maybe just for the champions, or done by the drivers themselves.................

Many fakes have the engraving on the back. In fact, that might be the main reason why the watch guy was suspicious in this case. Either that, or he had never held a post-2000 Daytona with the second hand at 6.

Or he simply wouldn't expect someone to walk into his shop and ask him to touch a watch that was worth somewhere between $10,000 and $20,000.

Here is a great example of the "Rolex paradox"...

Lot's of people who are into watches modify them. New straps. New dials. New bracelets. Clear case backs. Etc.

Here is an "expert" site that claims that a clear case back is a dead give away for a fake. Identify Counterfeit Fake Rolex Watches... Rolex or Replica? Don't get e-Screwed!

And here is a place you can get clear case backs for your genuine Rolex.
The New Sapphire Caseback for Rolex Watches By Thomas Preik>>>>>>

In fact, the reason why some people get a clear case back is so you can see the movement...and verify that it is real.

I am a watch nut and I have a character flaw that causes me to get upset when people who are absolutely dead wrong about something insist that they are correct. So I have on two occasions received cash or prizes from Rolex dealers. Because I am an a$$hole.

I have a 50th anniversary Submariner with a green bezel...the model is known as an LV. The V stands for Verde or "Green". Some early models used dials from the standard Submariner that has a black bezel and some used a newer version of the dial. One has the words "Swiss Made" spanning the distance of 3 second hand tick marks, and the other spans 5 tick marks.

Can you see where I am going with this?

Unless you are truly a nut-job like me and know the intricacies of a particular range of watches, you might make the mistake that a so-called 3-tick or 5-tick version of the watch is a fake.

So the scenario is always the same. Guy at the counter sees watch and says, "Nice LV" or ""Nice Sub...may I have a look."

Next they give me a wry look of "I know this isn't real."

They NEVER accuse people outright, because this would be bad form.

So I say, "Yeah I bought it from a friend. I got a pretty good deal. He assured me that it is genuine."

The guy at the counter now sees an opening to show me how smart he is.

"It is a forgery. I hope you didn't pay very much." Then they explain (in error) the rationale for this assessment.

Me: "I don't think you know what you are talking about." (hehe...the trap has been set)

So we bet. They open up the case to reveal the Rolex movement and pay me $20. I always try for $1000, but none of the guys that work at Rolex dealerships seem to have that kind of cash.

Yes. I am a jerk. But hey, it is good fun. Imagine if half the people you met accused you of driving a "fake Porsche".

Wait...I think you can all relate. LOL.

Re: Fake Rolex for the Daytona winner?

Strange but true...even Rolex dealers can't always tell real ones from fake ones.

I have a 40-year-old Rolex that I bought new from from a highly reputable jewelry store/Rolex dealer in Canada (actually, store records showed that it sat in inventory for 7 years, so I've only owned it for 33 years). It's a little unusual in that it has a white face and Arabic rather than Roman numerals. It also has a gold bezel but was sold with a steel bracelet.

Anyway, I had been scuba diving for a number of years while wearing the watch (no...it's not a Submariner; just my everyday timepiece that I wore everywhere back then) and I decided to take it to a different Rolex dealer to have them open the case to check to see if there were any signs that 150+ dives had compromised its waterproof properties.

I handed the guy behind the counter the watch...he looked at it, then looked at me from under his thick-rimmed magnifying glasses, and pronounced that "we only work on genuine Rolexes." He then handed it back, offering the watch with just two fingers and a hint of a sneer buried in his creased and grizzled face.

I don't remember exactly how the conversation went, but once I told him where and when it was purchased, a bushy eyebrow raised. He relented, took the watch, removed one end of the bracelet and within 10 seconds excitedly produced a a dog-eared cataloque from under the counter. The "attitude" completely evaporated when he realized this was indeed a genuine Rolex, and apparently somewhat unique (or at least not run-of-the-mill). After declaring the watch to be in fine condition, he offered to buy it for cash or take it on trade for a new Submariner, which he wryly suggested would be a more appropriate choice for a dive watch. I declined, thanked him, took his card and went on my way.

I hadn't worn the Rolex in at least a decade when my favored Porsche Design watch ceased ticking a few months ago. I dug out the Rolex from the bowels of an old filing cabinet, gave it a few shakes and I've been wearing it ever since.

To me, an old Rolex is like a vintage 911...no matter how old it is, it always has some measure of cachet. May my 987.2 CS age as gracefully.

Re: Fake Rolex for the Daytona winner?

I have often had comments / questions is that a real Rolex.

    Its an 18K Datejust.

When I get the question I look for the closest brick wall take off the watch and rub the face on the wall till brick / cement dust falls off.

And say "You don't think I would do that with a real Rolex do you?"

Then I blow the cement dust away and wipe the face. "Oh look no scratches maybe it is a real Rolex."

    Then walk away.
