I have posted another link regarding issues I had with my installer, but it is time to show off the final product and give my thoughts.
I have a 2008 CS with the Bose system, CDR 24. I love music and have to have ipod and XM. So, I chose to bypass the bose and do a complete overhaul. I have always used and loved Pioneer, so I chose the new Pioneer 920-bt nav head unit. This is a new model, and has a couple cool features including Pandora link and a Music sphere. Havent had a chance to use musicsphere, but the Pandora is pretty slick,
For the amp, I went with an Alpine PDX-5. I ran the stock speakers minus the sub for awhile, but when I was having the amp moved and reinstalled (see other post), I had the 3-way "front" speakers replaced with Hertz 163 3-ways, and then a week later had a JL W3 sub with custom enclosure placed in the rear.
Had a lot of issues, with the actual install and the overall sound quality. If I were to start over, I probably would have either purchased the digital interface for the Bose amp and used the Pioneer, or probably just purchased the ipod adapter.
I love the pioneer and the bass sounds good. However, I have had a terrible alternator whine that can not be cured. I have rewired everything myself, grounded and regrounded, and even grounded the rca's. Only answer, which was done by the 2nd installer, was to turn the gains on the amp way down. This has defeated the whole purpose of the amp, and the Hertz sound like **** with out the adequate power. Installer solution: ditch the PDX and run 2 amps, 1 for the sub and another for the sub that are higher power and won't require high gains. Recommended amps: JL Audio HD600. Price, an additional $1500.
The sub sounds good, and the enclosure looks great imo. I really do not want to replace the amp and put more money into this, so I am actually thinking about bypassing the amp for the front channels and just running them off the head unit (like the rears are hooked up), and just use my amp for the sub. I just hate alternator whine.
On a positive note, the stereo looks great, the bezel is an exact match for color and it looks oem. Sub also is a great addition, and looks nice in the trunk!
