There aren't a lot of mods that are immediately noticeable in the difference they have on a car (except maybe visual mods or something like a supercharger), well I am here to state that the factory short shift is GREAT! IMMEDIATE improvement in the Cayman's shifter, it is literally like driving a whole new car!
First let me thank the fine folks at Brandywine Porsche who currently have the short-shifter on sale for only $399 ( a bargain! ) for supplying me with a short shifter kit in short order.
Let's see what the kit looks like:
And here is the part # I believe.... oh wait is that another 997 part? Indeed it is!
As you can see the unit comes pre-assembled, nothing to cut, nothing to drill, simply disconnect the factory unit and replace it with this one.
So what about the installation? Well my dealership quoted me 2 hours of labor for a total of $157 to do the install. After having installed the center console myself, it was worth it to me to pay someone else to do this job this time so I was not able to take photos of the actual install. There are 2 very good articles on installing both the console and shifter in our Articles section:
Installing the EVO Short Shifterand
Swapping Your Center Console
If you read both of those you can do the short shifter install yourself as it simply requires console removal, then shifting unit removal and isn't as complex as the EVO install.
So what does the factory shifter look like? Here it is:
Sorry that picture came out a little blurry but as you can see a slightly different setup for the linkage and pivot points and a noticeably different shifter arm (shorter). Porsche has basically moved the pivot point downwards.
So how does it feel? AWESOME! I could not order this with my car back at the time I placed my order and after reading a few articles that said (incorrectly I believe) that the Cayman's shifting was shorter than the Boxster's I originally went for the normal shifter. Boy was I surprised at how much better the factory short-shifter is. ALL Caymans ought to come with this in my opinion. If you are even remotely thinking about doing this mod, DO IT, pick up the phone NOW (well you have until April 30th for the sale price from Brandywine) and place an order and set up a time for your dealer to install this shifter, or take the time and do it yourself if you are so inclined.
