    Trouble Filling the Gas Tank?

    When I picked up my car the dealer took me to a gas station to fill up the tank and I remember him having great difficulty get the last 1/8 to take fuel. He must have click the pump handle a dozen times or more while I watched the gauge and told him when it finally reached full.

    Today I went to fill the tank and it cutoff on me so I proceeded to add a few more clicks of gas thinking I do not want to overfill so after about 5 clicks I stopped. Got in the car and drove away and looked at the gauge and it was under 7/8 full.

    Anyone else having any problems with filling it up all the way? The first time with the dealer I just thought it might have been some kind of air pocket or a bad pump nozzle, but now that it happened again at a different station I am concerned something might be crimped.

    Russ,

    almost all of the recent porsche's I've had do this to some extent, and I'm not sure why. Usually, I put the little thingy that hols the pump handle on the 'medium' setting rather than the fastest filling setting, and it will fill all the way. sometimes I have to put a couple of clicks in afterward.

    Brad,

    That is interesting, my dealer seemed to think it was normal although I thought it a bit odd. I will try to fill it on medium next time and see if it makes a difference.

    I fill mine on the first detent (slow). It fills up and shuts off. The gage reads full. WIll it hold more?? Don't really care to overfill it.

    My 02 911 has the same problem, I normally have a good idea how much it will take to fill the tank and I pump at maximum until I am getting close and then drop back to about medium to fill it up.

    I will let you know next time I try to top it off. The bad part is I will have to keep checking the gauge to see if it is full yet. I might just be satisfied with filling to the first shut off and living with 3/4 to 7/8 tank.

    Russ, for you, 3/4 tank is about a months driving, right?



    JK, I have had no problem at all over here, but there could be a reason for that, that matches others findings. In the UK car, and hence tanks, are generally a lot smaller than you US cousins. So for that reason I think our maximium fill rate might be lower than yours. So never any excess frothing or bubbles in the fill pipe. Slowing the fill speed to your medium rate must equate to our max rate, and hence works fine.

    You are probably right Jack! I did go back to the station and decided to try and fill it all the way to FULL. It wasn't that bad just had to keep it running very slow, then it filled it up all the way.

    Jack,

    I have 230 miles, and I found a long isloated street in the back of my neighborhood and took it to 5500 rpm's in first and about 5000 in second. Got it up to 85 mph on a short st4ip of freeway. This coming weekend I will be going for a good long drive, (long for Hawaii) about 150 miles.

    I had a lot of trouble filling the tank 2-3 years ago getting worse all of the time, it got so bad I took the tech from the dealership to a petrol station. On route he was asking about my Porsche history so by the time we got there he knew I'd driven Porsches for over 15 years and knew a bit about them, as soon as I pulled the trigger a splash of fuel tripped the pump so they had it into the workshop and changed the tank vent line and valve which they said opens on pressure. Apparently the corrugated vent line can kink and so close off the line also causing the same symptoms.

    Had no problem since and heard of very few having it over here although there was a tech bulletin on the Carrera for the same thing.

    I just had mine fixed. The vent line was kinked.

    I have a 2008 base Cayman that also didn't fill completely. Following advice I read here, I am able to fill my tank completely if I invert the nozzle when I insert it into the car, so that the trigger faces up rather than down. This is not a stable position, so you need to hold the nozzle in place while filling.

    This appears to be a common problem on California cars, caused by the vapor recovery systems built into the pump handles that are mandated here.

    +1 on kcheves response. I have this issue on an 08 CS when using pumps with vapor recovery system. On pumps with vapor recovery system invert the pump handle and it will fill all the way in one go. Without it you shouldn't see a problem.

    Keep the nozzle 180 degrees to where you would normally have it. i.e. upside down.

    That works! I used to do it when I owned a diesel. My Cayman fills easily.

    I will try it. Vapor recovery nozzles and my filler neck don't like each other. I have all of the same issues mentioned above.

    As an aside, I sometimes get asked by other gas station customers (or station attendees) why I'm filling my tank with the nozzle inverted. I usually mumble something incoherent about Porsches being 'special'. Then I get in my car, insert the key on the wrong side of the steering wheel, turn on my one rear fog light, and depart.
