Convertible Top Adjustment For Loose Sides

So I had been searching for a while for a way to adjust the sides of my convertible on my 987.2, specifically where it bend over the top of the back of the window. It was loose on both sides when I bought the car so the top was closing over the guide rails instead of in like it should. I had it adjusted when it was in getting one of the front upper strut mounts replaced under my extended warranty (which they charged me an hour of labor to do of course for a 5 second job), and the drivers side started doing it right away again. Everything I have found has been about the 986 and the fact that it isn't adjustable and that the cable that's sewn into the top must be replaced. Fortunately for us 987 owners this isn't the case.

I took some pictures of my drivers side today while I was adjusting it to show you how to do it yourself as it is hilariously easy and just requires a t15 Torx bit or socket.

Bring your top about half way down so you can see inside it well. Next find this little strap that has I believe 4 slots in it being held on one of those slots by the tiny t15 screw.

Mine was set on the second "loosest" slot as you can see the mark, and it looks as though the dealer never bothered to even adjust this side (go figure). I moved it in one slot and no more problems with the top.

Easiest way to get the screw back in was to put it through the slot in the strap first and then carefully lower it down to the hole and start it in. I used my torx socket set with a small extension and had no issues. Do NOT drop this little screw as it will most definitely disappear into the void that is the innards of the top and most likely cause wear issues in there.

Wow perfect timing! I just noticed on the drivers side my top sometimes catches on the outside of the plastic window guard and I have to stick my hand out the window and guide it in while putting the top up. Was just about to take some pictures and post asking how to fix it...

Well I looked in there tonight and I found a light yellow / beige plastic cord hanging loose on the drivers side (which does this) but on the passenger side that cord was tucked into a channel in some piece in there. So I managed to get the cord on the drivers side tucked back in there and tightened up and thought that would do it but alas, it did not. Will try tighening the elastic up next.

I did the simple elastic repair last year and used a few stainless staples to make replacement easy. So far several months in the Florida heat and no problems. Takes about 10 minutes per side. My Indy shop wanted to charge me $180 for it

My elastic material just broke/tore.
I pretended to be a seamstress and punched in a brass metal grommet on the fabric portion and used a small bungee like chord with those napsack plastic locks. I kept adjusting it a little tighter in increments until the top laid nicely in the channel as designed.

For a 15 year old car the roof material still looks almost new. But some of the hidden strings and elastics can't hide their age.
