Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

I never thought too much about hail damage until what happened to my son's car after a storm. It would be great to have a car cover that can prevent damage from hail stroms when traveling with my CS.

A two inch thick rubber cover is not what I had in mind though

My sincere apologies, but I can't resist. A car cover that resists hail damage is called a garage.

It could be a carport, otherwise known as the almost-garage!

Re: Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

There's very little besides a roof that's gonna protect the car from a softball sized chunk of ice speeding towards it at ~300MPH. Pea or grape sized hail wouldn't do much harm if you had a good quality outdoor car cover but the wind would keep it from staying in place. (and I'm sure you know that there's no hail without wind)

Re: Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

I guess as a Broadcast Meteorologist who's sitting here waiting for a squall line to tear through my viewing area I should take a moment and chime in.

I think any cover is better than no cover at all. A cover will, as already mentioned, do little to protect the body from LARGE hailstones. But again, a little protection is better than none. What you may find is that the cover protects the finish from being marred. Any dents may be repaired through paintless dent removal. Those guys can make miracles. If you don't know of any in your area fear not; they'll majically arrive immediately following a hail event in your town.

One last point to keep in mind - The new severe hail criteria adopted by the National Weather Service this Spring is now 1" (as opposed to 3/4"). That means they will only issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning when hail is 1" or greater in diameter. You will not be seeing as many Severe Thunderstorm Warnings from now on as a result of this adjustment. The feeling was that 3/4 inch hail doesn't cause significant damage but 1 inch does. What you need to take away from this is that you may not get warned (at least by the NWS) as hail threatens unless that hail is at least 1" in diameter.

As an FYI we threw rugs on top of a car one time to keep it from getting damaged in a hailstorm and it worked, fortunately we had enough rugs to cover the entire car...

I was counting on you all to have a ball with this one. I will opt for a giant Prophalactic around my car to protect form penetration of ice balls.

I recently had 3 vehicles and my roof damaged by a bad hailstorm in Austin (perhaps the worst in the city's history). My old '99 Miata was in the driveway under it's OEM Mazda car, and it suffered over 4K in damage, less than my uncovered Miata right behind it.

It wasn't a Cayman though, it was an ex-roomates wife's car that was some non-descript square box car of some sort that I'm not sure was even worth trying to save... but we did...

An accelerometer may do the trick given you have enough "Dilithium Crystals" to powere the darn thing. On a serious note if you don't have a garage maybe get a car port. And if the problem is at work find some covered parking. Other than that insurance is about the only protection you are gonna get.

Good question, please don't get ruffled as we are all here having fun!

Re: Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

I drove through a huge hail storm after my last track event. The car was hit so hard that I couldn't talk to my Dad next to me. The hail looked to be about 3/16" or so. There was so much hail (and for so long) they brought out snow removal equipment and it was spraying the hail out like there was a foot of snow they were trying to remove. There were some stickers on my front windshield from the trackday and they were blasted off clean! Miraculously, there wasn't any damage at all to the paint! I thought it was going to be ugly.

Interesting. I have a Coverking Autobody Armor cover, it's stretchy and thick. I chose it over the spun poly Noah type covers which didn't seem to give as protection as I was looking for.

Re: Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

HailBlankets - Warranty Policy (4 Years)
Warranty is for defects in material or the workmanship of the product and against fabric becoming unserviceable. The manufacturer will decide to repair or replace after factory inspection. Warranty returns will depend solely on the manufactures decision after inspection of the product(s). Warranty does not cover fading, which occurs naturally on all products used outdoors. Severe weather can and will damage vehicle beyond the protection on this, and any car cover. HailBlankets™ are not hail proof! Do not rely on this cover for protection in all types of weather. HailBlankets™ are designed to “reduce” the damaging effects of hail, and in some cases prevent it. It is always best to protect vehicles in a garage.

    Coverking Warranty (1 Year)
Coverking products have a 1 year warranty unless otherwise noted on the product pages. If a product fails under normal use during the warranty period, Coverking will repair or replace the product. Such warranty claims must be issued an RGA number. To obtain an RGA number, email Include your Coverking Store order number (or the name of the store you purchased from), your contact information, and a brief description of the reason for return.

That is how I lost my 914 many years ago. Every inch of it was dented (except the top)! Broke my heart. I ended up selling it (after settling with the insurance company) rather than suffering though the extensive body work which was necessary.

Re: Is there a car cover that can prevent hail damage?

In the Army - in Kansas - I had a 924 and an Audi. The 924 was covered with a non-woven car cover. The Audi was not covered. We had a hail storm and the 924 came out of it with no damage. The Audi had quite a few dents. I'm not saying that a car cover will always protect you but it's better than nothing.

I personally like the idea of using pieces of carpet. It sounds silly but when you think about it carpet squares aren't a bad idea.
