Does PDK always use 2nd gear start?

Did my 1st year service for my Boxster today.

Asked for a loaner, got a bus... uh... Panamera

If I left it in full auto, the PDK wouldn't downshift to 1st at red lights. It would keep it in 2nd and use 2nd to pull away from the light. I was a little baffled at that ... It doesn't do that on the 987 does it? I'm hoping it's just the PDK mapping for Panamera is different than what they use in the 987, because that seems kind of weird to me.

Hey - my dealer gave me a Panamera for a loaner too!
I don't remember it starting in 2nd and I think I would have noticed. My CS PDK starts in 1st.

Re: Does PDK always use 2nd gear start?

Apparently, it does. From an insideline.com review of the Panamera 4S:

While flawless in the hills, the ZF-built PDK transmission is not perfect in the real world, despite the three different drive modes it offers. In Comfort mode it's way too lazy. In Sport mode it wakes up nicely but it still starts in 2nd gear (which we hate). And in Sport Plus it won't shift up to 7th gear, even if you jump on the highway. Many times we would look down while slamming the left lane to find ourselves in 6th.
From the above, I'm a little unclear as to whether the car will start in 1st gear in Sport Plus, but it looks like you get 2nd gear start in both Normal and Sport mode. And no, this does not apply to the 987 w/ PDK. As far as I know both Boxster and Cayman start in 1st gear regardless of what mode you're in.

For fuel efficiency, the Panamera does indeed start off in 2nd gear in full auto - unless you really mash the pedal to the metal. And did you sit long enough that the engine turned off? (Happens to my boy in Baton Rouge in his 2011 V6 base Panamera)

The old tiptronic gearbox on the cayenn's starts on 1st gear only when engine is cold,
or if you have psm off.. but it always starts on 2nd gear.. even the pdk's do.. if you have it on sport/plus it will start on 1st..

Wrong. The PDKs in the Caymans and Boxsters always start off in 1st gear, regardless of a cold or warm start or Normal/Sport/Sport Plus mode.

I think Alex911 was referring to the cayenne, that's the SUV that Porsche sells

    1st hand knowledge.

PDK always starts off in my Boxster regardless if I have it in std, sport or sport plus.

But I can see that Porsche did adaptations for the Panamera.

Hm, engine turning off? That sounds like a bad deal!

No, traffic wasn't too bad on friday, so I didn't sit at any red lights very long. I had a Panamera 4 (regular 4, not the 4S. the worst possible combo. The V6 combined with the heavy 4wd system), so it was extra slow off the line in 2nd gear.

Thanks for the info guys, i guess starting in 2nd makes sense from a fuel economy standpoint for a big luxury car like the Panamera. I did notice when i would shift into 1st manually, that 1st would rev up to redline pretty quickly, which probably didn't help the mpg.

Good to hear the 987 doesn't do that. I would imagine you guys with the PDK cars would be standing outside ZF with pitchforks if that were true.
