    Bought a 2012 Cayman R in Red

Looked at several competing sports cars and selected the 2012 R. Being my first sports car and not all that familiar with them, it needs to be said that that the Cayman R lines appealed to me far greater than the 911s. And the price was a whole lot better than the 911. After a few months of driving this beauty, I can tell you I'm hooked. The harsher noise and feel of the R is appealing to me; a different experience from the others. Am anxious to really let this baby stretch its legs on the track in a few months.

Welcome, staying good for the break-in period is a massive trial of willpower. Can't wait until you hit the 2K miles then open it up for the first time. It will shock you.

I've already opened her up. Was told to hold back for 1st ~ 500 miles. Have been pushing the car hard since then, especially in lower gears. What happens if one overdoes it during the break-in??

Short term, probably nothing. Long term, I would argue that you shorten the life of the engine.

That's prolly ok. It is not concrete but outside of the U.S, there is no specific break in instructions...

I quote from the U.K manual:

    during the first 1,865 miles

    - preferably take longer trips
-avoid frequent cold starts with short distance driving whenever possible
    - not participate in motor racing events, sports driving schools or similar
    - avoid high engine speeds, especially when the engine is cold

That's it............. How would you read that?

What does high engine speed mean? 4k,5k.6k, 7k or redline?

I take it to mean, drive as you would normally, no track activities but don't hesitate to let it rip when you are in the mood. Just stay off the redline.

For me, I would stick to 4k for the first 200 miles, 5k the next 100 and 6k at 100 and finally 7k after 500 miles. Once the mileage reaches 600 miles, feel free to venture to rev limit but still driving normally... I feel that the engine should be allowed to exercise while in break in mode. After 1900 miles, you'd be free to attend the first track activity when everything in the car has brokened in.

This is just my philosophy and my best interpretation of the UK manual. Given that in the UK, oil change is only required bi-annually, I am sure the 4k limit for 2,000 miles is pretty conservative for the U.S since oil change is mandatory for the U.S cars.... prolly to do with the poor gas quality? Who knows? I feed my cars with minimum 98 RON.
I still think this is due to the litigious society the U.S is and porsche wants to play it safe by using a very conservative running in procedure. But, is it necessary? You tell me..............

Oh BTW, congrats on the new CR... how about some pics then.....

The R version in the US owners manual says the same thing but...stay below 4.2K within the first 2k miles.

You get to enjoy your car for 2k more than those who hold out for a break in period.
FYI: Every Porsche is driven to its limit at the factory before you get your hands on it, so they come " broken in ".

I've seen documentaries about Ferraris, Lamborghinis and R8s test driven to the max by their factory test drivers as they leave the factory... Plus, do you think Porsches test cars, school tracks and racing cars are driven 2000 mile in advance?!

and RinCLE, congrats on your new CR!

That's my point... no such written instruction in the UK manual.

and we have a longer service interval... Prolly Porsche UK just wants us to blow up our cars...

but seriously, I think the advice is overblown. Most people ignore it and Porsche can then blame owners if the engine blows up later and prolly makes it easier for them to deny claims. Stay below the redline but I would drive the way I want to.

    +1

Guards Red is the color I would choose for my R if I didn't already have so many insurance points & speeding tickets.

    Need those pictures!

    Awesome choice. Congrats.
