Loud, irregular bass sound coming from speakers (basic sound system-not Bose)

Just an FYI--I didn't see anything about this issue on previous posts.
A few weeks ago, I started hearing this almost constant loud, low bass sound coming from my speakers that wasn't from the music playing. Adjusting the various controls (bass, treble, loud, ect.) did not alter or quiet the sound at all. I could even hear it after turning the engine off. The radio/cd player still worked, but the sound was all treble. Over time, the loud bass sound became louder and more constant. I could even hear it from outside the car.
I took it into Porsche and they said that sound was from the amplifier and it needed to be replaced. While waiting for the new amp to come in, I disconnected the 'bad' amp (it was really easy) so I could drive my car without the deafening sound.
The amp was replaced today under warranty. Now the stereo is back to normal and the bad sound is gone.
Hopefully this will help someone else who has this problem.
Happy Driving!
-Amy

My car may be getting the same issue. It started just yesterday so it is hard to tell the pattern but it seems to be mostly when I first start the car. Neither the engine nor the sound system (non-Bose CDR 24) needs to be on. It sounds exactly like thunder and it only seems to come from the left channel. Is that what you had?

Unfortunately, the car is just out of warranty.

That's a very common issue. Glad you were able to replace it under warranty.

Simon, unfortunately you might have to replace the amp.

You might try getting it in right away and seeing if they would honor the warranty if it recently expired.

I can certainly try but it may be too far out of warranty.

Anyone know where I can get an inexpensive amplifier for a "sound system plus"-equipped CS? This is the one marked "W11".

my JL Audio amplifier fit in the same space in the frunk with very little modification, the amp cost $330 and is easy to DIY once you figure out what wire goes where. The easiest thing to do is use a cordless drill battery, attach a wire to it and you'll hear a faint thump come from the speaker.

Re: Loud, irregular bass sound coming from speakers (basic sound system-not Bose)

So what is the time frame/warranty period for an 08 Cayman? I have made an appointment with one of the Porsche dealers in my area as I have had this irritating sound start about 2 weeks ago. It seems to me, to be getting louder almost to the point that it sounds like it could possibly damage the speakers!! Ugh, I hope I can get it replaced under warranty and if not them I'm paying to get that sound gone!!
