Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

I have used the forums a number of times since buying my '07 Cayman S 2 weeks ago (thanks to all member who contributed) and wanted to post up this article following a fairly quick installation of the Philips Running / Daytime lights (DRL) on my Cayman.

The lights in question are these - Designed for safety

I have tried to take pictures of the process, but this is my first time submitting an article so hope I get it right!

OK, firstly, a picture of the kit itself which comprises a control unit, 2 LED units and 2 mounting brackets.

    1) expose the battery and connect the positive (red) and negative (black) terminals from the control unit and feed the wires (which are very flexible) under the rubber covering the lining of the bonnet and into the storage compartment where you can mount it.

    2) cut away the strut in the front grill to allow space for the LED and bracket to fit. I found using a sharp stanley knife and heating the blade worked well as the plastic is pretty soft.

    3) You'll see that the mounting brackets have the metal 'grippers' punched through leaving a small gap, which I found perfect for attaching to the car, instead of drill and trying to fit with screws (which is nearly impossible without removing the grill and hence the bumper).

    4) The green arrows indicate where the mounting bracket clips into the gap between the grill and the rubber cowling which sits behind the grill, it's a very tight fit and holds the bracket perfectly.

    5) Next job is to feed the LED cable through the inside of the front bumper and through to the top where the bonnet release is (the plastic trim comes away easily from the inside of the bonnet lining where the bonnet release is). I use a trick by feeding through (from the bottom where the LED mounting bracket has been attached) some garden wire (covered in plastic so not to damage any paint work). I fed the wire between the grill and the rubber cowling and up behind the bumper and reached from the top of the bumper down with a small piece of metal with a hook on the end to grab the cable and pull it through - this is a very fiddly job, so have some patience! I then wound the garden wire around the end of the LED light cable and pulled it carefully through.

    6) I then ran the wire up the side of the inside of the bonnet (inside the black trim) and to the control unit in the storage space. Repeating on both sides.

    7) The Philips lights have a clever 'click' in method for attached the LED light into the mounting bracket. Do this and then move the bracket into the desired location, ensuring it is still firmly attached.

    8) Repeat on both sides and then start your engine! The control unit recognises when the engine of the car has started and the lights come on automatically, and switch off when you switch the engine off - really easy.

The picture looks OK of the finished product, but I can assure you in real life they look 10 times better, the LED lights are near identical to the DRL on the new 911 / R8 in terms of the quality of the LED light. I would also say being made by Philips the build quality of these units is top notch. FYI - This process took me about 2.5 hours to complete from start to finish.

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

I did the same mod a couple of weeks ago and can vouch for the brightness of the LEDs.

I fed the wires through bulkhead grommets that other wires were using.

I pushed the clips back to allow the front of the DRLs to be flush with the front of the fins in the grill, I think this looks better.
I used he self tapping screws to give some additional fixing but these do go into soft palstic so are not all that secure. Once I was happy with the position of the lights I put super glue between the top of the light and the bottom of the grill fin that it sits under.

    Very pleased with the result.

Talking Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

Those Hella units look pretty good as well, similar style of unit.

You might be able to pick up the Philips lights through eBay - PHILIPS LED DAYTIME LIGHTS 'DRL STRIP WLED 12V Click 1' - eBay (item 300449934824 end time Aug-25-10 04:35:08 PDT)

The thing I like about the Philips lights is the control unit, you don't have to wire them into a separate switch or other electrical circuit as they auto switch on the LEDs when the engine starts. Great for someone like me who's not the best with wiring

Got another pic from the front which makes it look a bit better.

Connect the wire supplied in the harness to your side lights and they will turn off when side lights are switched on. I didn't bother doing this though.

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

Yep, Waitforme is right, the harness comes with an additional cable that you connect up to your headlights / sidelights so when you turn them on, the LED's switch off.

I have connected this up to the front side lights which is very easy - you just pull out the upper cover around the side light, take out a couple of screws and you get access to the wiring behind - pic shows you where I mean.

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

Ok guys...fitted this weekend everything was pretty straightforward but had a few issues trying to get the correct location for the DRL!!

As you said Waitforme, you had to push the light back for it to be flush with the fins in the grill...are the metal grippers on top of the bracket still attached when you did this? - I am tempted to remove the metal bracket and attached the DRL directly to the top of the bumper blade...:-/

I see some of you guys have changed the sidelights to match the DRL...which one's have you used?...ive tried so many different types of LED's but none match the DRL with them being too blue - Is it legal to remove the sidelights completly and use the DRL's as sidelights?

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

I left the metal bkts on , I screwed them to the soft plastic bit above the LEDs, not sure how much grip they actually get from this as it is quite soft. I also put a liberal amount of superglue between the top of the DRL and the underside of where it mounts. They have not budged since I fitted them.

I have the sidelight LEDs I got on Ebay but I see they are longer available from the same seller, may be able to get elsewhere .. BAX9S H6W 64132 17 SMD LED (Xenon White) Bulbs

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

    Great write up, thanks!

I just ordered these (not available in the US) from Euro Car Parts, Cheap Car Parts - Euro Car Parts UK?s No.1 Car Parts Retailer. Their part # is 475770060

Price for a kit is 79.98 British Pounds which comes to appx. $ 127 in US Dollars. Shipping is 35 British Pounds or $ 55 US, so that takes some of the fun out of the deal, but if you order two kits, they travel for the same price.

I decided to get two, and will install the other on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma! That or sell it here on the Classified section.....

Thanks Waitforme, ive actually got those exact LED's so will give them a try at the weekend.

Going to try screwing the brackets to the top as they look alot more OEM when they are flush against the grill - this means metal bracket doesnt grip the top grill but some double sided tape together with the screws should do the trick - also noticed the bottom of the metal bracket catches the bottom grill blade fin under the DRL - will try bending this straight as when it catches it angles the DRL upwards rather than straight...

DRL's are looking great, i didnt bother wireing them to the sidelights as they are almost an exact match for my xenons

    Will post some pics soon!

Re: Philips Daytime Running lights installation (DRL)

Anyone know the length of the LED bars? I am in the US and am thinking about placing an order. I have a Boxster S and wanted to get a measure to see how they may fit.

    Thanks
