    May add driving lights

'07 2.7 Cayman with halogens. I'm not happy with my high beams. Low beams are pretty good with or without HID. I know my lights are adjusted properly but I just don't think they shine "down road" very well. I drive two lane mountain roads every day and it's getting dark.
I'm thinking about adding a pair of PIAA or Hella "pencil beam" driving lights that come on with my brights. There are some oval or small round ones that may fit in the center grill area, behind and on either side of the license plate.
Has anyone run these type of lights and do they provide down road light that would improve the brights? Thanks, C.

    Re: May add driving lights

    I have no experience, sorry.

Lots of people add extra lights over here, but I have only seen them once on a Porsche. A 911, with three or four smaller oval lights right where you are planning to put them. I guess it works fine as long as they stay clean.

Now, personally, I am of the opinion that if you add lights, you should do it properly:

I have a Boxster S, not a Cayman, but if memory serves, the fog lights on the Cayman are 55w. You might be able to fit a set of PIAA 1100x lights (also 55w) into the fog light grills (the 1100x's are round too) and only have to connect the wires. The only problem would be they wouldn't turn on with the high beams. But I've found the 1100x is plenty bright on its own with low-beams. I have sets on three different cars, although not my Boxster S.

    Re: May add driving lights

Thanks Dobbler, I never thought of that. The only reason I might not do that is I have found the fogs on my Cayman (with 55W diamond yellow bulbs) to be the most useful fogs I've ever had on any car. They really light the shoulders out ahead where the deer are hanging. I'll check those 1100x's. I'm thinking of looking into that center grill more. Maybe pop it out and fab up a nice little mounting bracket inside it to attach lights to. Northernsouler, Thanks for the pics! I love those cars and that look. I don't quite have the bal..., I mean nerve to mount lights on my hood or bumper top even though it looks rally cool.
I did a search and found you can remove that center section without removing the bumper cover. I guess there's room to get into there from under the front and removing a few fasteners. C,

Sorry, but I've done nothing. Now with the days getting longer, I'm driving less in the dark. Anyone else done anything with driving lights? C.

Are there brighter bulbs available? Maybe give the lenses a good cleaning with one of the many kits available these days?

    Re: May add driving lights

I think am going to use the PIAA 004x Driving Xtreme lights using the existing fog light wiring, loosing the fogs. They are close in size and should fit with a little creativity. Keep a basic stock look. What I need is a wide and bright driving light. We have a lot of deer that love to run into cars.

That is unless someone tells me Im going to smoke the wiring with these lights. They are 55w and should work, right?

Have you tried something along the lines of this:

    Re: May add driving lights

So are you considering removing your fogs and mounting the 004X in their place. That sounds pretty good but remember the fogs go off with the high beams. I thought the 2100's might fit on either side of the license plate in the center grille. The 004's may fit too as the center grille opening is about 3" tall. I think you could find power for the high beams somewhere to use to fire the relay that comes with the lights. With the battery in the frunk, I'm sure power for the load side of the relay could be found. Does anyone know a good place to tap into the high beam circuit for the relay coil? Thanks, C.
