    Rythmic Ticking noise at Idle

I notice that when the car is started and sitting idling there is a very rythmic ticking noise from the engine. I can't notice the noise when I'm driving, excpet when I come to a stop at a light and I can hear the noise reflecting from the car next to me.
I've read some stuff about it being injectors etc and that it is normal on most porsches?
Is this normal for Boxsters? Is it part of having a porsche?

Sounds like lifter tick. I am new to porsche, so I can't say if that is the norm. I came from having several Mitsubishi's and they were famous for lifter tick. There were all kinds of home remedies and oil additives, but I think the only real long term fix was the newer lifters with a larger oil hole.

All of my mits had lifter tick and you could do some things to get it to go away...but it would always resurface.

I agree, sounds like lifter noise. Does the ticking get faster or slower as the revs increase and decrease?

What weight oil do you use and when was it last changed? How many miles on the car?

It is most likely the variocam actuator. Many of the M97 engines seem to suffer from this. Not a big deal until it gets worse...then all goes wrong.

If it starts to get worse, and does not go away when warm, then you should have it replaced. If you do not then it may fail completely, causing the cam timing to go haywire and the production of catastrophic sounding noises (sounds like flailing timing chains).

You can test if this is the source using a Durametric or PIWIS by turning the variable cam timing on/off. If the clicking goes away when the actuator is shut off then viola, you have your problem.

    Cheers,

The ticking get's faster as I rev the engine higher.
