Hissing noise behind dash - possibly from A/C

I'm getting an intermittent hissing noise coming from behind the passenger dash area. I think it's related to the A/C cycling. I don't remember hearing this before, but now that the temperatures are over 100 here, it seems to be more prevalent. I've pushed the ECO button when I hear the hiss, but it doesn't stop right away.

The noise sounds like some kind gas moving at high speed through a metal pipe - kind of like the hissing noise you would hear on old style home radiators. Has anyone else experienced this? The A/C, by the way, is still ice cold.

I've got the EXACT same problem. Unfortunately ... I was thinking about taking it into the dealer (1 month old, only 1200 miles on it) when I got rear-ended. So now my Cayman is stuck at the body shop for a very long long time.

Will you let me know if you find out what the problem is? Like yourself, I didn't notice anything wrong with the A/C functioning ... it seemed cold enough, but that sound was horribly loud and annoying.

Absolutely. Someone had indicated that it could be a problem but not to me so far. I live in FL and use the AC all the time. I've only got 1500 miles but the A/C is cold. Too cold some time. My beater Nissan work car also has that liquid through the pipes sound occasionally. It has 17K miles and works great too.I don't think it is a problem. Just the bumps in the night that characterize the car. I am going to have my oil changed next week and will have the daeler take a look. I'll let you know what they say.

The hissing noise on my A/C got so bad that it was hissing all the time. About the same time the air blowing out of the A/C was hot. I took it to the dealer who discovered that the condenser had a leak. They ordered a new condenser. In the mean time they refilled the A/C system.

As it is warming up around here and the A/C is being used more, I'm hearing this hissing as well. Yesterday it was really bad and continuous. It sounds like it's coming from the front of the passenger seat area. I'm not sure if it's normal for this car or not. Any thoughts?

Now that it's warming up and I am starting to use the A/C on a regular basis, I will have to listen for this issue. Thanks for the possible heads-up.

I was told that this is normal, but when I had a refrigerant leak, the A/C would make the hissing sound all the time. It's really annoying and it seems to be getting worse as time goes by.

Welp, here's an update to this thread. I brought my car to the dealership for the service advisor to listen to the air con system and was told that the continuous hissing was not normal. He said that it was normal to have some hissing when first turning on the system but not to have a continuous hissing noise. They're going to be performing a recharge and leak test next Thursday. I'll keep everyone posted.

I am having the exact same thing, I bought my car in December and I am in the midwest but i hear it all of the time. There is no mistaking it. I asked a buddy of mine with a 911 if he has the same issue and he looked at me like I was crazy. My car is going into the shop on the 10th of may and will have it checked out. If they tell me anything I will update here. So I am not crazy or a hypocondriac (sp). I was starting to think that I was an over cautious mother.
    Thanks

I don't have a missing sound, but I do notice that a small amount of air blows through my vents at all times, when my speed exceeds 30 MPH or so. It appears that something's not sealed right.

And speaking of, I hear a good deal of wind rush noise coming from the driver's side of the car at speeds exceeding 50 MPH. I can't "feel" air leaking in along the seals, but I can hear it. It strikes me as odd, because the car is obviously air tight in terms of my not being able to close the rear lid easily unless I leave a door open...

Ok... My '06 Cayman S had this hissing noise CONSTANTLY and the a\c NEVER worked, not after 6 dealership repairs. I was told by a tech there that the hissing noise usually means that the car is low on refridgerant, but they'd fill it up and the noise would still be there and the a\c would stop cooling within two weeks. The owner before me had the compressor replaced, but the a\c issues still persisted. Later, they replaced evaporator, I don't know if it fixed the noise though because now the car is somebody elses problem as it's not on their lot anymore.

My '07 has the noise for about 30 seconds when I first start the a\c, I very rarely run it. Once the air gets cool, the noise is no longer there and a\c works perfecly.

Update: They kept my car for 4 days while they tested/repaired the A/C system. Not sure what they replaced but it works great now and without the noise behind the dash.
