Engine problems started with loud screeching sound + white smoke

Hello fellow fellow Porsche and Cayman lovers.
Over the years my 06 Cayman S has been the most wonderful driving experience ever, minus the fact that it is a little bit underpowered as I had a supped up Twin Turbo Z in the past with serious power, but regardless it has been very reliable until this happened.

I was driving to work yesterday, I was going pretty fast until I hit a stop and go spot. That's where I started hearing a loud screeching noise coming from the engine bay. It was kind of embarrassing while sitting in traffic. When the car picked up speed the sound disappeared, and when I put it in neutral at highway speed the screeching would come back.

This sound is exactly like a loose drive belt that you hear on a normal car when cold that goes away when the car warms up. Since I did replace my drive belt and spark plugs + coils a year ago, I thought maybe it was just loose and I was starting to plan to tighten it.

I park the car at work, come back 10 hours later, start the car and a big cloud of white smoke comes out from the exhaust !! That's when I realized I had a bigger problem !! The smoke goes away and does not come back unless I leave the car in idle for a few minutes and push on the gas to see some white smoke coming out !!

The car drives fine with no signs of the problem other than that the RPM jumps to 2000 when I come to a stop and goes down to sit higher than normal at 900-1000 !!

I get home let it sleep, check the oil next day in the morning, and it was unusually down to the middle mark, I put oil and start the car and it seems to idle normally this time!!

What do you guys think the problem is !? I know this does not look cheap to fix !!

    Thanks a bunch

And fits the symptoms in this case as well....so hopefully a reasonably cheap fix.

It's funny that after I posted this .. I saw the post of Kman-Went that was posted 4 days ago !! Same story .. but I don't get white smoke until I park it for a while or leave it at idle .. I assume maybe a lesser level of failure !!

It sounds like the VOS and I hope so since it's a (relatively) inexpensive fix. However I'm concerned as oil burns as blue smoke, not white. Is your coolant level okay?

Are you thinking head gasket ? I have not checked coolant level, you have to remove the engine cover to do that, correct !!?
I have been watching the temperature and I did not notice the needle move outside it's normal position !! Most others described white smoke with the VOS issue !

You can check the coolant level be removing the blue cap located next to the black oil cap in the rear truck.

However, let the engine cool down overnight before attempting to remove that cap! Look down the opening and you should see a "MIN" indicator that normally will be immersed in coolant if the level is normal.

The only thing I would say here is that most people when they look in their rear view mirror cannot determine white from blue (grey) smoke, so this may be a factor.

The symptoms fit, and when you leave the car and start again that initial vacuum could be enough to suck oil through the VOS into the intake....but it could also fit in with what Printzone said on coolant, and a cracked head, blown head gasket etc. could explain leakage into the cylinder of coolant whilst the car is sat.

I doubt you'll be able to tell anything from the levels, because a little of either fluid is enough to cause copious amounts of smoke.

If you stand behind the car when you start it you should be able to notice the difference between burnt coolant and oil easily. If it really is coolant then you should not start the car again as you could cause a hydraulic lock up if too much coolant were to accumulate in the cylinders, and then you'd be talking big bucks to fix a broken block etc.

My money is still on the VOS.

Re: Engine problems started with loud screeching sound + white smoke

I have had a car with a blown head gasket before and I can tell you that is smoke and not steam.. Plus the coolant level will go down pretty fast and the " smoke" should be constant!
I'll put in a new VOS tomorrow and we'll go from there..
Anyone knows a dealer in LA/OC that offers discounted parts !?

Re: Engine problems started with loud screeching sound + white smoke

I just took the engine cover off and took the hoses that connects the oil separator to the intake on both sides.. guess what, they were soaking with oil !!
That pretty much explains it !!

Now I need to get the part from the dealer and replace it .. very very easy. The crankcase hose and the intake hose, snaps right on, you just squeeze it on the sides. The oil return line will be slightly harder to remove since it uses a clamp and is buried down the engine.. will keep you posted !!
Ohh also I need to get a tool to remove the star bolts .. anyone knows the size !?
    Thanks

Good to hear! I don't know the size of the bolts but you might want to consider just getting complete set of Torx as they're used everywhere on our cars. Get from T10 to T40 or so.

Actually you need the external torx bits for the VOS, more specifically the E10 external Torx bit.

However it is worth getting the Torx bits as well for jobs you might do later on the car

Kudos on the article it will appear in our next newsletter. It would be nice if there was some simple guaranteed test an owner could do to test their membrane in the unit.
