Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failures

Recently heard about IMS bearing failures on Boxsters and was told thta the problem may also occure on Caymans . Would like to understand :
* if IMS bearing failures are a problem on Caymans ,
* If I should be taking precautions as advised by LN Engineering ,such as
1) Changing from Mobil1 0W 40 to 5W 040
2) Changing from Mobil 1 to Motul or Shepco oil
3) Replacing the drain plug with a magnetic version
4) Perform regular checks..etc

Thanks in advance for your comments !
Don

Re: Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failures

A search here would turn up the answer, but succinctly, NO, this hasn't been a problem on Caymans. Supposedly there have been a few Caymans that had the problem, but it always seems to be someone's cousin's friends uncles sisters brothers co-worker that had the problem. I don't think any of our members here have ever reported an actual case. So not saying it can't happen, but pretty darn rare.

The Advice from LN Engineering might be good advice to help your engine regardless, but chances are you aren't going to have an IMS failure on a Cayman.

Re: Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failures

Thanks for the feedback. Don't recall what I used when I first searched the topic but it didn't yield any results. Having read all the IMS responses it appears that the problem has been addressed in all Caymans.

Thanks again,
Don

Re: Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failures

This appears to be a confirmed IMS failure in a member's Cayman...

Re: Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failures

I have only heard of a couple of reports, but never seen real details of them. The IMS on the M97 engine was improved over the M96 and that seems to supported in the lack of failures.
