Airbag light after battery change walmart

Does anyone know if the Walmart auto center has the ability to turn off the airbag warning light.

My battery died and Big O wanted like $215 to replace the battery vs Walmart's $80.

Anyway, walmart change the battery and the car works fine except for the airbag warning light that must have been tripped by the battery change.

Does anyone know if they are able to turn off the airbag warning light from whatever computer system hookup they have?

Assuming they can get access to the computer system in the Porsche Caymen, does anyone know exactly how they would maneuver around to turn that airbag warning light off?

    Thanks.

Can 3rd party mechanics shops do the reset?

Can 3rd party mechanic shops do the airbag reset or just the Porsche dealer.

Battery died and changed out for a new one and airbag light won't turn off.

Wondering if resetting that is a dealer only thing or if 3rd party companies every have access to these things.

I don't know how standardized the computer systems are in these cars.

    Thanks.

You can reset the airbag warning light with the Durametric software, most independent shops should have one.

Yes, I've found most shops that actually work on Porsches have the Durametric software, but few can afford the PIWIS software that the dealer will have. The Durametric will reset the airbag light.
My question: what did they do to trip it? It should not have gone off for a regular battery change, unless perhaps the ignition was on while they changed the battery?

Re: Can 3rd party mechanics shops do the reset?

I figured that changing a battery was the easiest thing you could have done mechanically to a car yet those guys managed to find a way to screw it up.

I read on this forum that other people said their airbag went out after changing the battery.

Here is the deal, I traveled for a few month, so I left a float changer on the batter to prevent it from going dead however the hood was not closed all the way so the light was still on. So the battery was completely dead for an extended period of time. I am not sure if that was a contributing factor or not.

Anyway, Walmart auto services are oil change, tire change and battery change. So I am not sure what type of computer system or software they are working on.

Man, I don't want to have to travel hundreds of miles to my nearest porsche dealer and shell out hundreds of dollars to them to reset this light.

I will let you know what happens as soon as I get back in town and bring the car back to the walmart. I am sure other will be interested on that Walmart ability are with Porsche.

    P.S.
Walmart and porsche, 2 words you never hear in the same sentence.

Re: Airbag light after battery change walmart

I hate to be pessimistic, but I doubt Walmart will be able to help reset the light, or figure out why it is on in the first place. I have had my battery die, and have disconnected it numerous times, and have never had the airbag light come on because of it. The only thing I can think of is that they may have disconnected one of the airbag wires, either intentionally or unintentionally, when they installed the new battery.

Get 9volt accessory plug to keep codes..

Anytime you need to do a battery change get one of those accessory plugs with a 9v battery you attach (about 5 bucks ). It's enough juice to keep the electronics going so this doesn't happen..Good insurance.

If the airbag light was tripped by low power than the reset should take care of it. If there is a wire disconnected, then this warning light should come back on I am thinking?

    Do you agree?

    Thanks.

As KS-CS said, if you disconnect your battery your airbag light should NOT come on, that includes your battery going low and going dead, again should NOT come on.

The proper course of action here is to take your car to a Porsche dealer and have them put it on the PIWIS and see if something else is wrong with your car. What if you also happen to have a faulty airbag? Sure you could clear the warning light but hopefully it would come back on anyway to alert you to the fact you have a faulty airbag. Do you want to find that out in an accident?

Others have recommended Durametric and that would be your other choice, use it to turn off the airbag light, but in doing so do you know what caused it in the first place? You are assuming it is the low battery, but I don't think that assumption is correct and you have no proof that it is. If the airbag is faulty or there is a wiring problem etc. then the airbag light will/should come back on and you'll have to go to the dealer anyway, so spending the money on Durametric may be a good investment for other work later on, but it may not pay off for the airbag light alone depending on what your circumstances are.

Finally, changing a battery on our cars is not hard, you just need to make sure they hook up the vent tube properly to the side of the battery. Once changed you will get PASM, etc. warnings but those will go away after you drive the car a short distace. The airbag light should not come on with simply changing the battery.

All I know if that the airbag light was off when I drove it in the Walmart auto center and it was on when it left. They did drive the car outside and part it.

I should have placed a hidden camera in the car to see what those people did to my car.

Is there any reason that whatever error you have can't just show up on the car's display like the tire pressure does,etc..

For example, it could state the problem or even an error code that you could look up online or call in about.

When you group the serious problems in with the silly ones, it causes people to just ignore them all.

I wonder if it has to do with the dealers making money?

Anyway, I just wonder what those walmart guys did to my car.

    Thank you for your concern.

No one saying you don't have a serious problem, the problem is we don't know what is wrong with your car. You can get a code reader or the durametric pro software will read out the codes for you but often times it is just an airbag fault and you don't know what it is. Finding out what they did at Walmart might help pinpoint why you have the light on, so would diagnosing with durametric or at your dealer.

Re: Airbag light after battery change walmart

I don't think anything is really amiss here.

I had Kinetic replace my battery during a DE inspection a couple of years ago (no, I did not go and fight with Porsche to replace a wear item; I have better things to do with my time). But, when I got in the car, the air bag light was on. In 2 minutes they took car of it, but of course, they are a specialty shop that knows Porsches, not WalMart...................

BTW I concur, I doubt this is a missing airbag, etc. the people at Walmart probably tripped something accidentally that caused the light. It would be nice to know what it is though just to be on the safe side of things.

Re: Airbag light after battery change walmart

Well the first thing i would do simply at my home is shut the car off open the front hood , take the key OUT SIDE OF THE CAR " dont ask me why" Take the cover off not take the power and negative terminals off from the battery wait 30 min. drink a nice glass of wine in between. Then simply conntect back the correct way tighten. start up the car and go for a 15 minute drive. that should take care of any issues that are not really going on. I changed my batt and yes ther was a psm light or something else i just did the same thing and dont forget to drive and it should go away.

If not then get it checked. its seems like a simple way to make sure that all this fuss is not about nothing. if you did this already then sorry about the time spent reading this haha.

Re: Airbag light after battery change walmart

They tried to use like a device they said cost around $100 and it could not even communicate with the porsche.

Called the porsche dealers and they want $125 just to reset this! My goodness, anyway. One of the guys said they might be able to get access to a machine that cost several thousands of dollars that would have a better chance of working.

I also tried the trick of disconnecting the battery with no luck.

Just wanted to give everyone an update.

Re: Airbag light after battery change walmart

    I have the same issue.

I left my headlights on which drained the battery. I hooked up the jump wire to get the front trunk open. I charged the battery for 15 mins, disconnected the charger, and attempted to start the car. It wasn't enough. I charged for 45 minutes more and was able to crank the car. I got a message about Airbag error (forgot the actual message) but the air bag light remained on.

I drove car for about 10 minutes and the light remained on. I disconnected the battery for about 45 minutes, hooked it back up, and turned on the key. I then got a PSM error along with the air bag error. I turned off the ignition and started again. PSM error and air bag error occurred again. I drove for a while and switched the PSM switch on and off. The PSM error went away and hasn't returned.

I've driven the car for about 30 minutes and the air bag light is still on.

    Ideas?
