Exclamation Now YOU can drive MY Porsche!

For fun, and curiosity I decided to list my Cayman on TURO (See TURO in the app stores). It is an app that let's you rent cars from local owners in an area where you may be traveling. If you pull up Turo and search for cars in Kansas City, my car "should" come up. If you want to come drive my car just book a renting on TURO and I'll hand you the keys!

    Anyone else tried this?

Any idea what I "should" be charging per day? By default the app wanted to set it at $54/day which I thought was too low given some guy in my area is renting out his Tesla S for $135/day. I raised mine to $124/day but I can set it at whatever I want, what would you set yours at? (Assuming you'd give this a try of course)

Oh and I also elected their best insurance coverage from Turo, even covers wear and tear, which I'm wondering if that includes tires after awhile?

Re: Now YOU can drive MY Porsche!

Tough question. My wife and I visited a cousin in Sonoma Valley last year and we didn't have the time to drive our CaymanS there. I looked into renting a Cayman to drive on HWY 1 but the prices were $250 per day with a grand total of 75 free miles. The 911 was $450 per day. We thought that was too high for the six days we were going to be there. After driving HWY 1 and other scenic routes from San Francisco north, we regretted not renting something that was fun. (Although I will say managing the oversteer on a Hyundai Elantra on HWY1 was certainly exciting )
So $125 doesn't sound especially high, maybe drop it down to $110 per day if the rental is seven day or more? You might get more renters, I don't know.
In thinking about how people drive in a Porsche, how exactly does the insurance work for the owner?

Hmm... I'd rent my other cars in heartbeat, but Boxster? People rent cars like this to have fun, and not the kind of fun I like for my car. Will the insurance replace your bold tires after 10 smoking launches?

You are a brave man. Or a looney. No way would I let a stranger drive my car.

There's no way I'd rent out one of my cars like this. You know people are going to abuse the clutch, tires, etc, and even if everything incl consumables is 100% insured, it's my time, paperwork, and aggravation that will go into getting any repairs done.

No way in hell would I do that, people don't care for your property. You can't even trust people with a minivan let alone a sports car.

With the way most people treat rental and loaner cars I can't see doing this to any car that wasn't 100% disposable. Maybe it's insured but you still have the headache. Plus who eats the tickets from red light and speed cameras?

If it's relayrides, then yes. They deal with tickets and they have a $1 million liability insurance on it. Not that that is sufficient in the US if you injure a couple people really good, but it is more than the $250,000 liability limit which is the biggest we can buy here in MA even if we pay extra.

One example where the math works is people who want a fancy car that costs a certain amount of $$$ per month, which they can't afford. If they rent it out for a lot of $$$ per day, and put a 2-day limit (which most Porsche owners seem to do), then that can be a significant contribution to being able to afford such a car in the first place.

Or let's say you already got such a car, and your financial situation changed. Maybe you can keep it, which might be desirable either from an enjoyment standpoint, or maybe it prevents huge financial losses that would result from a sale at this particular point in time.

Between Relayrides insurance, your own insurance and a warranty a lot it covered. You can't sweat small nitpicks in the car, of course. Basically if a lease or rental return would allow a piece of damage then you will have to accept it, too.

If what I've gotten from Avis, Hertz et al fall under nit picks I'll pass.

Don't know if they still write them or if they're available in all states but you might be able to get around the absurdly low liability on the auto policy with a liability umbrella policy.

That's what I do now. But it took years until an American explained this "trick" to me. I was not amused. They don't see the problem with this limit which is way too low given how much medical treatments in the US cost.

ETA: and of course a company like relayrides can get 4x the limit with no problems.

On a related, but totally different note, I was thinking - I wish I could drive my Boxster on the west coast during vacation or business trips. What if there was car exchange program, like those student exchange programs. Gentleman agreement between Porsche owners where you'd let somebody drive your car for a day or two, and then somebody will let you drive his car in his area... No money involved.

Why would you do that? Many would beat the hell out of it.

I may do this with an old beater, but hell no with a Porsche.

I can't even take a rockchip on my paint without losing my mind. I wouldn't be able to do this. Even with my E30.
