2010 Chevrolet Camaro
Went to the Chevrolet dealer yesterday to view the new 2010 Camaro (I've owned 3 older versions). Looked at the car and unfortunately the pictures in the magazines were better looking than the actual car. The car looked like a bloated Chevy Cobalt with an awful lot of plastic on it. Add to that with GM dealer putting on a $5K dealer add on, brought the car to $40K for a 6 cylinder, the price was just below a standard Boxster. The drivers cockpit was low and cramped (I'm 5'7") and the overall fit and finish of the car was poor. Additionally, this was the "coming out" and the plastic rear spoiler wasn't put on, so I couldn't drive the car.
The engine is hidden by a large plastic piece while the exhaust sounded OK, the car is far outclassed by both the 2005-2010 Ford Mustang (owned 2) and recent Dodge Challenger.
GM again has come up short...I really wanted this to be an "OMG where is my checkbook, I have to have it!" type of car as I've been pleased with GM for over 35 years.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
This month Car and Driver did a comparo on this car with a new Hyundai Genesis. It actually won the comparo and they had some nice things to say about it. From the pictures I think it looks pretty cool but maybe thats a function of my seeing Megan Fox in one in Transformers; schwing! Looks like the V8 version will do 0 - 60 in 4.8 sec, not bad. Sorry to hear it looks dinky in person; I would like to see one live to make a judgement. I really was hoping this car would be successful for GM there are a lot of people who depend on their success to support their families.
I hope the dealer putting the 5K markup on the car is one that will be bought out by the company. Right now they need to move product and produce cash so they can stop the bleeding and draining the treasury of taxpayer money. Never under estimate the lack of vision of a car dealer.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
I went with a friend to the local dealership to check out the new Camero last week. I was very underwhelmed! No ss version only a v6. When the salesman started the car it sounded like a Honda, almost no sound. The fit and finish was marginal. Come on GM this was an opportunity to hit a home run when you really need it.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
I like the lines of the car.....the best design I've ever seen for a Camaro. The problems is, that it will age and loose it's sex appeal faster....like every other Camaro design has in the past (i.e. IROC-Z). In my opinion, a Porsche will always look good, regardless of how old it is. I'd take a 70's era 911 over any domestic sports car...because they just age better. Don't get me wrong though, I am passionate about our country, and very concerned about where our auto industry will end up. I hope that we're able to recover soon from these challenging times......

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
My father still has his original 1967 Camaro convertible (another restoration project too) which has been stored in a hangar for many years. I too was sort of hoping that the new Camaro might be cool to pick up and that my dad might consider one, but thus far I've been underwhelmed by it.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
I agree with the general consensus here...underwhelming. It's a small thing, but I was very disappointed to see that the vents behind the door are just pressed into the metal, not actually cut out! C'mon, why even put them there??! I know they are for looks anyway, but part of the look is the appearance of function!! The other thing that bothered me is the very sedated engine sound of the SS. This is a muscle car, for God's sake, it should sound farty and loud (in a melodious way, of course)! The dealer had a $10,000 markup on it, bringing the price a little North or 50K! WHAT?! Someone who was very interested in the car was telling the salesman that he would walk out with it right then if it weren't for the greedy markup, and the salesman basically said, "Tough". GM might need to police these idiots a bit more if they want to survive because the days of the $100,000 Z06 are gone. I doubt anyone is looking for a $50,000+ Camaro!

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
I would rather have my Cayman and a car payment than ANY free domestic auto.
They're all garbage.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
Took this at the Baltimore car show.
Considering some of GM's other vehicles, I thought it was pretty nice. Test drove an SS, it drives like a beast!! Its just shy of the base Corvette for performance. As usual, GM could have done better with the interior materials. Overall I was impressed...... for the price!! I am talking MSRP or less ( and by less I mean that I can get the supplier discount which puts the price of an SS UNDER $40k). I would never pay more than the MSRP for it.

Re: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
GM makes great products, I've been very impressed with the Saturn Aura and the Chevy Malibu both are representations of what GM can do when they decide to. When I retired from the AF in 2005, the discussion was the Camaro would be produced shortly....I waited until they announced that it wouldn't come out until later...I bought a 2005 GT Mustang then a 2007 GT Mustang convertible. Ford produces a great product with outstanding quality. GM had so many chances to get it right (2005, Transformers movie--sales brochure or a vehicle in each showroom) and keep a loyal following, instead they delayed, then told us the Camaro was cancelled, then when they finally brought the car, it was a disappointment.
I've owned many Chevy's through the years and in almost all cases the quality and reliability has been superior, even though Consumer Reports in many cases has nothing good to say about the make. I want Chevy to succeed not only as people will lose their jobs but they make great vehicles. That said they need to pull their heads out of the sand and get their act together. Currently they are not in a position to ask a premium for the Camaro, especially when they are seriously considering another bailout and bankruptcy. The car doesn't stir my loins like Cayman or even the Mustang does.
