Up in Flames

Driving home last evening I saw something I have seen on TV, etc. but have never experienced in person...a BMW going up in flames...as you can see I was on the opposite of the road, the heat was so intense that it felt that I was in an oven...it stopped traffic for over 12 miles...I understand no one was hurt from the local radio report...I own BMW's in the past...mine was never this "hot"...

Re: Up in Flames

That's crazy. A few months ago while running an errand I saw a corvette on fire, on the way back there was just a frame left.

Re: Up in Flames

The proper term for these is, of course, "Car-B-Que."

It's also trivial to have this happen with a Boxster or Cayman - all that needs to happen is for a lit cigarette butt to be ingested into the engine air intake; that's why there's heavy screening there.

Re: Up in Flames

I think that car belonged to Kneecap Nick... Luckily, he got out just as Frankie "The Flame" tossed the cocktail

Re: Up in Flames

Is the pic from West Side Hwy?

One Friday evening, a pretty girl and I were starting off on a ski trip. We weren't going out (yet) and were pretty excited about the trip and the coming weekend. Going up west side hwy, I had to slow down suddenly from smoke and reduced visibility. Right in front of me, in the middle lane, there was a van burning down to its frame, flames shooting up. Not a huge deal, but quite striking when it's in the middle of the road. It felt like an omen at the time and I was very careful the rest of the drive...

No...it was on the Belt Parkway around the Sheepshead Bay exit...yeah, I felt the same way...very striking and a little scary when you are that close...I understand from the news cast it went up in flames "fast and furious"...

Re: Up in Flames

Wow! Glad I dumped my M3 two weeks ago.... Someone else's problem now. 14 years of track days and it was solid as a brick. No flames whatsoever.

Maybe this guy parked in the weeds with a hot catalytic converter and went for a hike? Oh well...

Ya know, there are a lot of things I will miss about BMWs. I hope one of them isn't nice club members... BMWs are rugged, straightforward cars made to take abuse well and perform much better than they should. In 14 years of track work with my M3, I replaced one water pump and a pair of rear subframe bushings. Those are the only things I replaced other than regular maintenance. Still had original clutch, valves, everything else on the engine that I didn't modify.

The Cayman S is a really cool car, but it's far from perfect. Sonic boom, melting power steering pumps and blowing oil at autocrosses for starters. Dealers who try and charge $250 for an oil change... Mine you, I BOUGHT one, so I really love the car, but it does not bode well to for Cayman Club members to put down other marques with these little jokes.

People who drive Porsches definitely live in glass houses. Shouldn't throw stones.

Relax my friend. Nobody here wishes for anyone else's car, regardless of its marque, to go up in flames. Just a bit of gallow's humor.

Re: Up in Flames

Sorry, I got that "Molten Werks" message out of context on my subscription to this thread. I'm a little new to the forum. My bad. Still in withdrawl from my ex track-bunny.

Re: Up in Flames

Absolutely no offense intended. I've had the pleasure of sitting in a 914 while it tried (and succeeded) to burn itself to the ground.

If you've been around enough to see it happen, a little joke here and there shouldn't hurt...
