F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

I usually record all the F1 practice, qualifiying, and race on my DVD recorder so I can watch it at my leisure. When I went to watch the Friday practice I had a blank disc. I thought I screwed up the programing of the recorder (not uncommon). Yesterday when I went to view the qualifying, the disc read "protected movie" and was blank again. I'm now thinking that Speed Channel or Bernie Ecclestone has electronicly blocked their broadcast from being recorded. It seems I can record it onto a VCR tape but the quality isn't the same. Anyone out there have the same problem? I hope this doesn't trickle down to Moto-GP and World Superbike!

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

I watched and recorded it on a Directv DVR. However the race today is tape delayed on Fox (1pm Mountain) as is the next race.

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

had no problems recording practice and qualifying with fios dvr on fri. and sat. , todays race is on fox at 3pm est. not speed channel, check your dvr series record menu, sometimes they need to be reset, for some reason mine won't pick up the ALMS series ,have to set it manually. good luck !

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

Well, something strange is going on. I tried to re-record the qualifying replay, I started the DVD recorder 1 minute early, it recorded up untill the F1 qualifying started, then the screen went blank. Guess I'll watch it live.

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

My DVR on Cox in Phoenix does not allow me to record HD programming in certain situations (Live telecasts that are copyrighted for instance). It is really annoying, but I am not sure if there is a resolution. Now, my DVR on another provider in another house lets me record the same programs. So, I bought a slingbox, and watch from remote most days.

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

Seems like it will record on my VCR, but that's like going back to carburators from fuel injection! Ahhh...progress.

If the race ever comes back to Indy on Montreal, you're leading a road trip!

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

Hey Someday - I have found the same problem as you. I typically record F1 practice, quali, & races on the Cox HD Cable Box/DVR combo. Then sometime later I transfer the race from the Cox DVR to my Toshiba DVD player/recorder. I have done this successfully for every F1 race for the last 2.5 years. For some reason, with the British GP, I could not burn a DVD copy. If F1 has instituted some new copy protection in their signal (to prevent footage showing up on YouTube?), I'll be quite pissed. There is no valid reason that I should not be able to burn a copy for my own personal use.

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

The British F1 was not on Speed. Did the tape delayed FOX broadcast not work. Mine worked on DirecTV. So it may be your provider?

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

It was on Fox on Sunday, and replayed on Speed during the week. I recorded both, but then subsequently erased the Fox version and tried to burn a DVD of the Speed rebroadcast.

Re: F1 on Speed Channel blocked?

Okay - it's definitely a DRM issue of some sort. My DVD recorder will not let me burn a copy to DVD-R, but it will let me 'transfer' the recording to a DVD-RAM. I guess the idea is that the DVD-RAM is less 'pirate-able' and less portable.

What brand DVD recorder are you using ? Sony recorders are notoriously problematic, while Panasonics are more forgiving.

Cheers.
