    World's Best Overall Car

Ok - start listing what you think is the world's best car - past or present. You can have your own reasons for what defines 'best'.

My candidate? Since this is a Porsche forum, it's fitting that I put forth the 959. My reasoning? It was considered the most advanced car of its time when it was released, is still very competitive against new cars, and is the only car (that I know of) that has won major off road and road course events (Dakar and LeMans class win) in its variants - no other car even today can lay claim to having that flexibility.

What's your thoughts on what makes the best car ever?

Porsche 356. This is the car that put Porsche on the map. Sure it won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in it's class, as well as the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, and the Carrera Panamericana.
This is still a much sought after car including the Speedsters to the Carrea 2 coupe.
Sure, your 959 will run circles around a 356, but how many years did they make 'em?
"the only car (that I know of) that has won major off road and road course events (Dakar and LeMans class win) in its variants - no other car even today can lay claim to having that flexibility."
Are you kidding me? Are you not aware of the 356 history? Ouch!

    Re: World's Best Overall Car

Best road-going sports car: McLaren F1 (road car). Proper lightweight, carbon-tubbed, mid-engined, large displacement, normally aspirated, no-nonsense car. Not sure anything has surpassed it (for my tastes) yet. McLaren is rumored to be planning a new range-topping car (above the MP4-12C) that should be interesting.

Of course there are many other great sports cars - and may great sedans, etc.

What world class off road race did it win? Rallying isn't considered offroad afaik. Didn't study 356 history in school.

I didn't consider longevity of production in my criteria, but that doesn't stop you - glad you like the 356.

    Re: World's Best Overall Car

I'm not very sure that the World's Best Overall Car, would have anything to do with its historical perspective. If we asked the same question as to the World's Best Overall Battle Tank,.. I think no one would care about its WWII existence, or years of past service. They would care only about its battlefield worthiness for today.

In that same way I would choose the Zonda R, which is my ultimate adult/child auto toy fantasy... And the McLaren F1 would probably be second on the list.
    Critical criteria:
Most advance and beautiful mid-engine sports car ever made.

    Re: World's Best Overall Car

The question/premise of this thread is obviously way too subjective to be of any real value, and there are similar threads already on this forum, but I suppose it'll be interesting to read the replies. I mean, is "best" the fastest? the more expensive? the most comfortable? the roomiest? the best gas mileage? "The Best" could be anything.

I'll define "best" as most influential, and given that definition I suppose my "World's Best Overall Car" would be the Mazda Miata. I'm pretty sure that this car has introduced more people to performance driving than any other car ever made. It is reliable, nimble, inexpensive, rear wheel drive, and ultimately just a blast to drive. It single-handedly revived the concept of the lightweight, two-seat convertible, and nobody has really been able to match it in the 20 years it's been on the market.

    Re: World's Best Overall Car

Fun question with no real value for obvious reasons. How can you compare the 959 to the original VW beetle or the 2CV or the Ferrari GTO?
In my book, the Citroen DS (which is anyway featured in such discussions all the time) is as good a candidate as any to take top honors. WAY ahead of its time with features that top brands only now offer as options (i.e. rotating headlights). Aerodynamic and with a ride that puts Jags and Rolls to shame. A mint example of the top of the line DS23 Prestige from 1974 goes for a whopping 75000 euro.

Your comment on 'best' being too subjective was actually the point. I didn't want to rehash the old time to speed or time to distance criteria. The same cars would come to the top of the heap, with the odd newcomer. That is too easy. I can't speak for others, but I have a CS and hang around this forum because of passion. And there are a host of other vehicles which invoke interest in me - and in most cases because of what they represent, the way they look, who owned them, whatever.

Your choice of the Miata, for instance, is a great example. No where near the fastest, quickest, etc but I can relate to why you picked it. I could state the Focus SVT for similar reasons, and we'd both be right! I like seeing what pushes peoples buttons, not a stopwatches!

Yeah, but I'd still take Bodhii's Zonda R over the Miata... if given the choice.

No Ferrari's yet?! The CGT and Veyron are both great candidates. That cutaway of the Bug is neat - that engine is huge - and those driveshafts look so small!

    Re: World's Best Overall Car

If you mean no expense limits and no day to day utility that is one category and if you mean useful, capable and beautiful (and that is subject to another debate about being required) that is another. A car that can only be driven a few hundred miles before a $25,000+ expense (Ferrari and others) vs something less expensive to maintain with more performance than is legal is another. The exotics mentioned aren't best at anything other than a splashing announcement that their owner has arrived and please, please look at me. "Best" needs defining. Trophy wife or friend. Sometimes they come in one package but most times they camouflage as a Veyron.
