What to say? Been a while since I got into my Cayman S. Its been tucked away in my garage for the past two months waiting for a little break in the weather. It was a beautiful day here. Started out in the low twenties, snow banks everywhere. It hadn’t snowed in a few days and we had a spot of rain a few days before so a lot of the salt is off the roads but there’s still quite a bit of dust on the road. I went to the garage, unplugged the battery maintainer ( those of you that live in the northeast that don’t drive the Cayman in the snow know what I mean ) Started the car smiling at the sound, and proceeded on my way. It must have been pretty cold in the night, all of the trees had a rind of frost on the branches. The trees were really striking against the background of the deep blue sky. I wished I had my camera with me but it was not to be. Took the twisty back roads to my destination. It was enjoyable, the music of the engine in the background, the sun and feel of the drive. At one point I was accelerating as I exited a cloverleaf, tight, on camber and leveling at the exit. As I accelerated I felt the rear come out a bit. Nothing dramatic just a gentle reminder to be gentle with my inputs. I recalled a post that I had read from someone who spun his car in the cold at a roundabout. It was a reminder that these tires have much less grip in the cold. Thinking about warmer weather to come and more driving days : )

In my continuing saga of funny stories related to the mechanical layout of the CS, I offer the following:

I was filling my car up at the gas station just down the street from my house a while back when I had an entertaining conversation with an older gentleman filling up his F-350 pickup at the next pump.

He walked over to tell me he like my car, and then, upon noticing the fueling nozzle stuck into the front fender, he asked if the gas tank was in the front of the car.

When I said it was he offered the following gem (keeping in mind I'm in NC): "Well boy, then yer' sittin' on a time bahm!"

I assured him there didn't seem to be many problems with Porsches exploding in front-end collisions, but he walked way un-convinced. :hilarious:

Flashlights are becoming more and more sophisticated, as well as rather expensive. Case in point: the upcoming mPower Emergency Illuminator, which made its press debut this week at an event in New York. Designed by the Porsche Design Studio to be "a stylish product with emergency utility, it will cost somewhere between $250 and $300 when it comes out in March of 2010.

Aside from the fetching design, the mPower Emergency Illuminator boasts some innovative battery technology. One battery "tube" stores two CR123 batteries, while the other has what's called an OnCommand Reserve Battery that the company says has a minimum 20-year shelf life and will deliver "power on command when and where you need it."

While the special reserve battery isn't rechargeable and will wear down if you use the flashlight a lot, it will never degrade just sitting around in its tube. In other words, you could never turn this torch on for years, and it would still work the moment you need it--according to mPower. Replacing the backup battery will cost you around $25, though that price may go up with inflation over the years.

It's also worth noting that the flashlight has a built-in USB port for charging cell phones and other gadgets. If there's juice available from the CR123 batteries, your device will draw power from them; if not, it will charge up via the backup battery.

Well, it's been about 8 months since I installed my Fabspeed Catback exhaust - and I guess I've finally had enough of the drone.

I really like how it sounds under full throttle, and on the track, and have appreciated whatever HP increase it provided; but, as a daily driver, with a Tiptronic that frequently holds the RPMs right in the drone zone when driving around town, I decided to switch back to my stock exhaust.

I did decide to add the DREAM-1 exhaust collector. I found that re-installing the stock system was much harder than removing it in the first place (at least doing it by myself - another set of hands probably would have made it much easier). But, after about 4 hours, a couple of bruised knuckles, and several cuss words later, I finally got it done.

I had forgotten how quiet (relatively) the stock exhaust was, compared to the Fabspeed. Since I was switching back from the Fabspeed, I couldn't really appreciate what, if any difference the DREAM-1 exhaust pipe makes, but the design seems to make more sense than the stock T-collector.

Now, I just have to clean up that Fabspeed, and place an ad in the Classifieds to see if I can find it a new home.

Blue Ridge Parkway drive - end to end

I was fortunate enough to be able to drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway this past weekend, from it's beginning point in Virginia all the way to the end in Cherokee, NC. It has been many years since I've driven the whole length, and this was truly a trip to remember.

My wife was participating on a team running the Blue Ridge Relay Run (12 people running 208 miles from Mt. Rogers, VA to Asheville, NC over 36 stages!) and so I took the opportunity to drive the Parkway while she was running and met the team at the finish line in Asheville.

For those who have never been, the Parkway is an amazing and unique National Park, consisting of 469 miles of twisting roadway cut through and along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA and NC. The speed limit is 45 mph (and speeding is a Federal offense!), but the Parkway is not about speed - it's about beauty. And besides, the occasional "romp" to 50 mph can make the driving more than a little fun!

I started my drive first thing on Friday morning, beginning at Rockfish Gap, VA and my drive took me to many points along the way to see the sights, eat some great food, and generally enjoy the amazing weather, scenery, and driving oppportunities. (The high of 67 meant it was windows down cruising weather the whole trip, which was a great bonus after our summer heat in Raleigh.)

My Cayman splits the rocks!

I ended my first day in Little Switzerland (Mile Post 335) and stayed at a great little funky spot called the Alpine Inn. The Inn is tacked to the top of a cliff resulting in amazing views, but if you fall off the back balcony it's about 150 feet before you'll hit anything!

Alpine Inn (spot the CS!):

I have to say again the weather was spectacular and the scenery as pretty as I've ever seen it on the Parkway.

The combination of the clean mountain air, the sound of the flat six, and the feel of the wheel through the many twists and turns is something I'll always remember.

I highly encourage everyone to take a drive there some time. It is worth the effort!

I recently bought a 1 year old Cayman (private sale). The previous owner had purchased an extended warranty thru the dealer with Prizm Administrative Solutions. Cost was almost $3,000. Apparently it extended the warranty by 10,000 miles and 2 years. The warranty was transferred to me when I bought the car. Has anyone bought the warranty? ....used it??? I know nothing about it, how to use it (hope I never will need it!!), what it covers, etc. I bought the car in the U.S. and brought it back to Canada. I would appreciate any info you may have......Thanks!!

Well, it's taken me a while to get around to posting (here anyway) about last weekends DE at Carolina Motorsports Park, but I've got to say it was an absolute blast! Easily my best track experience to date. (Not that there have been that many...)

I got on the road much later than I had planned, but made the 3-hour drive down to Camden, SC last Friday evening and checked into the hotel the Hurricane Region PCA was using as their headquarters for the weekend. It was nice spot and I was quickly sound asleep with visions of apex's dancing in my head.

Sorry.

Got up very early on Saturday, ate a nice buffet breakfast at the hotel and made my way to track, located about 18 miles away in Kershaw, SC.

I got to the track in plenty of time to set up in the paddock, get checked in, tech inspected, and make the drivers meeting. From there it was off to class. I was placed in the Blue (Intermediate) run group and it seemed like a good bunch of folks and a nice mix of cars was at the track.

As a side note, some of the more interesting cars in attendance (to me anyway) were a Nissan GT-R, an Audi S5 (I had seriously considered this car before buying my CS), and a Ferrari F430 Spyder - with 30 day tags!

We had been expecting very hot weather - this is SC at the end of August after all - but it turned out to be a very pretty weekend, with fantastic weather especially early on Saturday with the rest of the weekend being entirely reasonable.

I met my instructor after class and we prepared for the first track session of the day. I liked my instructor a good bit and really feel like I learned a lot from him over the weekend. The first session was my first time on the track and while it wasn't anything like smooth, things felt very good. I liked the track a lot; it was technical and certainly challenging, but didn't appear nearly as intimidating (to me, anyway) as VIR, where I had run all my previous DE's.

My second session out was a bit better than the first, and I was starting to get really comfortable with the car. I had only one DE with my CS at VIR last year and I never really got in a groove there. Something clicked this weekend, however, and the car and I really started getting along. I'm not claiming I was fast or good, but I do think I've reached a new level of understanding of what the CS can really do.

The next two sessions of the day went really well and I was obvioiusly quicker and more consistant as the day continued. Granted, there were only about 20 cars in the run group, so it wasn't a crowded track, but I was able to carry good speeds through many of the turns and passed a number of cars in each session.

Again, I've got to say I really feel like I've made a break-through with the car now. I was able to place the car around turns largely using the throttle and the precision of the control was amazing. I absolutely need to work on smoother inputs in steering, throttle, and brakes, but I'm staring to feel like I'm getting control of the car. There is just so much feedback coming to you through the steering wheel and your butt in the seat it's almost easy. The car really goes where you think it, and it just gets better with speed.

Saturday evening was fun as a whole bunch of folks, instructors and students alike, headed to a local Mexican restaurant for some good food and track talk. It was a nice way to wind down, and to talk over a few lessons learned during the day.

The first session Sunday I seemed to pretty much pick up right were I left off, and my instructor gave me some excellent tips on some finer point that really helped me in a few corners. I'm liking this!

My instructor offered to sign me off for solo and I was stoked! The process was actually pretty formal at this event, in that I had to ride with a different instructor for my next session and then if he agreed I could solo, he and my original instructor had to sign a form releasing me out on my own. Both agreed and so for my third session I was on my own!

I have to say the first thing I did on my own was very nearly put two wheels off in a bad place on the track - Turn 3, for those who have been there. My first lap out alone I took it pretty easy, but with the start of lap two it was hammer down. I got through Turns 1 and 2 in good shape and heading hard into 3, a tight left-hand sweeper. My speed and line were good, but I quickly realized I didn't have the weight of an instructor in the passenger seat any more! The car drifted a good way to the right as I got on the throttle at the apex, and there I was hard on the gator and confronting a tire wall if I went off!

I am very happy to say the class work and instructor lessons kicked in, however, and I stayed constant on the throttle, kept the car nice and straight until it settled down, and then eased back to the left and onto the proper part of the track. Instead of possible disaster (we were repeated told how dangerous Turn 3 is!), there I was safely through and headed for Turn 4! One of my prouder moments of the weekend.

My last session of the day (and the weekend) ended early when about 15 minutes into the 20 minute time slot I turned a lap just exactly as I wanted to. I figured why press my luck on the last laps, so I took a cool-down lap and headed into the pits to pack up and head home. All in all it had been a VERY good two days at the track.

CMP is a great track, the Hurricane Region folks did an excellent job, and my instructor was probably the best I've had yet. I certainly learned the most from him - though I suppose it may be because I listened to him better than the others.

Still, I had a wonderful time! Now I have to work hard to not get too cocky for my next event and not think I've advanced farther than I have. I know I'm still not nearly the fastest guy out there (which really isn't my goal, anyway) and I still have much to learn. Being humble is a virtue, I think, and there is always more to learn!

My first look at the new Camaro SS - As expected with 400+ HP, a lot of grunt down the straights, but surprisingly fast in the corners too (not sure what kind of tires he had).

Well, I'll be off for my first visit to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC for the Hurricane Region DE this coming weekend.

I'm really looking forward to it - other that what is sure to be oppressive heat throughout (it's always hot in SC!) - as it will be my first DE on a track other than VIR.

Don't get me wrong, VIR is an amazing track and I have very much enjoyed the events I have attended there.

Still, it will be nice to try and learn a new track; one which certainly appears to be challenging, but perhaps doesn't offer quite as many places to "bite you" as VIR does. I'm hoping I will be able to concentrate at bit more on the line and being smooth rather than on not trying to make a mistake and bend up the car.

I hope to post more next week after the event and maybe even have some pics.

Here's to a fun weekend of driving and learning!

Well, somehow this post got saved as a Draft, and I just noticed.

So here's some late news...

The Hurricane Region PCA had its annual Wine Tour a few weeks ago and my wife and I really enjoyed it.

The group met at our usual Saturday morning coffee spot, and from there caravaned west on I-40 towards our destination wineries.

We started off at the NC Wine Festival at Tangelwood near Winston-Salem, and from there moved on to visit RagApple Lassie in Booneville and Grassy Creek in Elkin. Our final tasting of the day was at the Old North State Winery in Mt. Airy, where we were also provided a very nice dinner.

Unfortunately, my wife and I had to depart from the group early on Sunday to make a family gathering back in Greensboro, so we missed two more wineries the rest of the pack visited that day. Still, we were able to make a quick trip up Pilot Mountain on the way back and enjoyed the whole trip greatly.

If you're in the area, come on out and join us next year!

Hello,

I just bought a 97 Boxster. I am amazed at the overall difference in this car and my 95 BMW 325ic and 2008 Solstice GXP. The Solstice is faster of course but the Porsche is superior in every other way. I see features in the Porsche that were 10 years ahead of the average american car.
Other than two new rear tires and a couple of AC dash vent units everything works and my focus is on discovery and detailing.
I am researching the web for resources and have found even more that I found for the BMW.
More to follow.

Well, at 32K miles, including some 2 dozen track days, I finally decided to change my rotors. I have had a replacement set sitting in my garage for several months, but I kept feeling I could squeeze one more month out of them.

After my track day last week-end, I finally decided it was time - the fronts were showing a lot of cracks in the vent holes, and while none were "connecting the dots", or extending to the edges, the rotor thickness was also down to the minimum.

Changing the rotors turned out to be very easy, and didn't take much time at all - kudos to Porsche for making it so easy to work on their brakes. The only glitch was that the new caliper bolts (which you are supposed to replace when you change rotors) required a T-55 Star (torx) socket key - which I didn't have - while the bolts that originally came on the car took a standard 10mm hex key.

So, after a quick run to Autozone to buy the necessary socket, I was good to go - and now, so is my car.

No, I didn't get pulled over for driving too slow at Hallett this month :taunt: . . . but I did have an interesting vehicle to share my raceport with.

I thought it was a real police car when I first saw it (the Oklahoma H.P. do drive some mean-looking Dodge Chargers), however on closer inspection there were a few discrepancies, like the lack of radios and other usual law enforcement paraphenalia inside, and the following motto on the side:

. . . which didn't quite jive with the usual "to protect and serve". . .

Turns out it is just a "stock" Saleen Mustang which the owner modified to resemble the one in the movie Transformers (which I had never seen - much to the disappointment of the car's owner) . . . the POLICE and 911 decals are magnetic and removable (at the request of his local P.D.), but he drives around with the light bar and white vinyl-wrapped doors all the time. Anyway, it made for a nifty pacecar for the week-end.

I've been fighting a buzzing noise coming from the right rear shock tower area in my '07 Cayman S for about 2 week. I now believe that it's coming from the gas struts which hold up the hatch. When you tap them they rattle. I wrapped a shop rag around the right side one and closed the hatch and the noise appears to stop. I'll test for a couple of days but It's looking pretty good as a source. Not sure what Porsche will want to do about it.

I need some advice here. I bought a Teguipment Charger/ Maintainer for my '07 Boxster this past January after experiencing a dead battery from winter storage (common condition, I was told afterward). I bought the Teguipment Charger/ Maintainer and have used it since. However, after six months, I'm recently finding the light on the charger is not indicating that it is charging. The top set of lights on the unit does not light when it is set up to charge the car. Is this a fault in the system? Is the car fully charged and won't accept a further charge from the unit?

We headed back to Stuttgart to return the car to the factory. We've logged about 900 miles in 7 days in Germany. From the scenic back roads to the autobahn (the best highway ever!), the car did not disappoint. It was the ultimate road trip.

Leisurely cruise back to Stuttgart following the flow traffic. Any slower and you'll have a Smart car on your tail

We first checked-in the hotel when we arrived in Stuttgart so we can unload all our luggage before finding the the coin-op hand carwash Gator Bite recommended. I brought a microfiber sponge, drying cloth, and some carwash liquid. I was able to borrow a little pail from the hotel but there was some sort of miscommunication because the receptionist politely mentioned that I can't wash the car outside the hotel. LOL! I found the carwash near the factory just as GB mentioned in his blog.

Pick rinse, then shampoo, and select no-spot rinse... nothing to it. :)

After arriving at the factory, I took some pictures of the car before handing over the keys. We met with our rep and wrapped-up the paperwork. 6-8 weeks before you take delivery in the states he says. This will probably be the longest 6-8 weeks.

See ya soon!

Since we did not have time to visit the museum when we picked up the car, the factory made arrangements for us to visit it after the drop off.

Porsche Museum

Nice color

Can't get away...

Porsches past and present

Factory ad

Next, we are off to our last pit stop, Amsterdam!
--------------------------

Amsterdam

We arrived in Amsterdam Weds afternoon. Airport is 20 mins away from city center. After checking in the hotel, we walked around town and got our bearings. We visited our first museum, Anne Frank House. A must see but in case you haven't read the book, you should read first, the visit will be more meaningful. Our hotel is around the corner from the Anne Frank House and is situated in one of the quieter pockets of Amsterdam, surrounded by canals and trendy restaurants and shopping areas. If this is your cuppa tea, you are in a good place. However....if you want to see the "other side" of Amsterdam, venture out about 5 mins out of this area and you are right smack in the middle of Dam Square, where the tourists and locals commingle and "coffeeshops" line the streets. Then make a right anywhere in Dam Square and you'll be in the Red Light District. You have to walk by even for just a couple blocks just to take in the scene. Leave your camera in your hotel, pictures are no-no in this part of the world.

The next day we visited the Van Gogh museum and Heineken Experience. Heineken Experience was fun and warrants a visit if you have time. It was drizzly and cold and perfect time to be indoors. We had a really good dinner at a cozy cafe serving Dutch and French fusion food. Perfect ending.

So.....15 days, 13 nights, 4 countries, many cities and little towns, 9 hotels, 900 driving miles....you know what they say, all good things must come to an end. But this is really not the end. Let's just say it is a "to be continued"....in 6-8 weeks.

Gas fill-up in the earlier leg of the trip cost about $7 a gallon! Also, you pump first and then pay. I went inside to hand over my card so I can pump but I was told to pump first. What a concept!

Still breaking-in the car but encountered a situation where I had to just let the car go. Autobahn merge lanes we encountered were short, abruptly merge with the slow lane, and terminate with some planters at the end. During one merge situation, I found myself next to a big semi truck with the merge lane coming to an end very quickly. I heard the semi's engine rev-up thinking that the driver was trying to speed up to give me some space to merge behind the truck. Regardless of intent, I did not want to leave the situation to chance so I stepped on it. I felt the sudden burst of speed as the pdk downshifted several gears. As this was happening and seeing the tach near redline, I thought of the break-in period but safety must come first. It wasn't long before a gap opened up and I merged ahead of the semi. It was a little close but we merged safely. Power delivery was phenomenal.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a well preserved medieval city in Germany. It's a walled city and offers an exciting glimpse into 14th century
Germany. We could not park in the city itself because of an ongoing festival so we parked just outside the city walls and had to walk with
our luggage into town.

Imagine it without the cobblestone streets

local birds

Upon entering through one of the pedestrian entrances, you'll get the feeling that you just entered the twilight zone. It felt like we were
transported back in time. The residents were in costumes preparing for the big celebration later on that night.

Bavarian festival - groups representing different Bavarian regions

View of the city walls

The daytrippers are mostly gone... we have the city to ourselves.

Walked around town, watched the festival, explored the back streets, and later joined the Nightwatchman tour for an entertaining take on the city's history.

The next stop is back to Stuttgart where we'll return the car back to the factory :(

Hi there,
I'm new at this stuff, but I thought I'd put the question out to those who have more experience... What can be done for the front exterior of the '09 Cayman? Since there are no fog lights there is no aluminum splitter? What can we do for some kind of aluminum splitters in the 2009 Cayman? All I could get was the aluminum side air vents and supposedly they are going to do an aluminum lower spoiler. Does anyone miss the splitter on the front? It's not as easy to dress it up cosmetically!

Any help would be appreciated!
