PCM issues

I stopped this morning for a coffee and when I restarted the vehicle the PCM started to act up. Symptoms were:

1. no volume on radio
2. source selector would not select a change - for example, it failed while I was listening to FM but when I tried to change to source to Jukebox the FM still showed up on the screen.
3. After a full reset (which did nothing other than lose all my data including my Jukebox stuff, no big deal) I was unable to put the original radio station into present 2; it allowed me to do this after a little while. I could easily put the original station back into presets 1 and 6, however.
4. I have volume for the map guidance so it seems as though the amplifier is working.

My Durametric cable showed no faults. However, when I ran a diagnostic on the volume the display screen showed "service" - this could be normal I had not used the cable previously for this sort of thing. The service note went away after a short while.

I am hoping that perhaps after the vehicle has been shut off for a hour or so it will somehow reset itself.

Note added later - it seems to have recovered and is working ok now,

Vehicle is a 2014 Cayenne diesel with Nav and Bose.

Electrical gremlins can be hard to diagnose.

How old is your battery? Original?

Have you ever had any low battery situations? Where the battery was either 'dead' or run so low as to not be able to crank without a jumpstart from another vehicle/charger/jumpbox.

Because batteries don't last forever, and when they start to fail in newer vehicles it can be a devil to troubleshoot. If they get run below a certain voltage there's potential for permanent damage done to them that will shorten their lifespan. As in, a battery that might be expected to last 5-6 years might need replacing at 3. You list yours as a 2014, so one would hope it'd last more than 3 years.... but not if there have been excessive drain situations with it.

You're mentioning button functions, does yours have the touchscreen or do you have controls on the steering wheel? If so, were any of those controls working? Because if the other controls were working then the problem could just be on the hard button panel in the PCM. Which is, effectively, 'part of' the PCM, so it'd have to be serviced a whole but it's possible a 3rd party could repair it for less than you might experience at a dealer.

The PCM is not difficult to remove/replace.

Thank you for your comments.

The battery is original. The car has been in service since Dec 2013 so it is now 3.5 years old. Since then I have driven it 233,000 km, typically at least every second day. It is never driven on short trips to drain the battery. I doubt that I have any battery problems. I have never had one yet.

Neither the touchscreen nor the steering wheel buttons would make the thing work right. However, once I waited 10 minutes after shutting it off it worked fine and has worked fine since.

For now, it was just a random glitch. I may revisit that assessment later perhaps.
