Autoexpress performance car of the year 2008-our cayman s came second
I am still thinking that Im nuts to trade in my cayman s for the 997 MK2.
As you guys can see from the video, the Cayman S Sport beat the Lambo LP-560 and 997 GT2. Tester rate it so high that it came second behind the legendary Skyline GTR.
Im well impressed with the laptime as well!!!

Re: Autoexpress performance car of the year 2008-our cayman s came second
I paid a deposit in september but I was told by my local OPC that delivery of my car will be postpone til feb/Mar 09 cause Porsche will only start making the sports exhaust for the 997 MK2 next year!!!
This gives me another 4 months to enjoy my cayman and bragging about her ability to entertain!
If the current cayman s did so well; it just make me wonder how good the facelift version going to be with more power and LSD???
PS: How fast can TESS get round the Anglesea circuit???

LSD - Limited Slip Differential
|
 |
A limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity.
The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

When we went around the Anglesey circuit we were using the Full Distance track - not the short one they used on this test - so timings are not comparable. However - Tess Would be faster.... Even I might be....
Tess and I, for a modest outlay have already coaxed 350+ BHP (Possibly More) out of our standard Caymans..... Together with LSD and the Suspension Improvements (see photos on Anglesey track day) we have dialled in.
How about cancelling your order for a 'nasty 997' due to their delays...... Giving Tess £10,000, and a free hand to modify your Cayman -
You will have a Mean Machine, more Driveable and faster than any 997...........
You will also have SAVED MONEY...................

Very quick, I went for a passenger ride with Tess around Anglesey and the Turbo nutters spitting fire with double the BHP were devoured and spat out with ease.

To 'Clarify' -
Nick means the Japanese 'Turbo Nutter Barges' as described by our instructors...............
All the Japanese Saloons, 4x4's, anything - modified to produce 600+ BHP, that we found, and 'Pi$$ed' all over...........
On the bends, out of bends, on the straights, - everywhere..........
And as for 'Spitting Fire'.... Every one of them burnt more petrol out of their exhaust, than we did inside our cylinders.
The only car we could not keep up with, was a 'Radical' (and even he was pulled over for Noise Violations).

I think the best mods you can do for a cayman s is to put TESS on the driver's seat! He must worth another 50bhp!

Re: Autoexpress performance car of the year 2008-our cayman s came second
The GTR is a good car technically.
The problem for me is, aesthetically, to my eyes, it is about as ugly as they come, outside being ugly and inside being about the most atrocious thing I have yet seen. Since it is about the total experience for me, including all of the emotions a great car can invoke when driving and looking at it, the GTR utterly fails for me.
But the great thing is there is no one single choice. Probably for some it is aesthetically perfect. For me the Cayman S is by the better choice, but choices are what make the free market so great.
Lots of great cars with different advantages and disadvantages.

Wonder how he rated the cars... certainly wasn't in lap times.

I think it is done on "driveability", i.e. what feels the best to drive round the track.

Did all of these motojournalism outfits test the same cars? No Cayman S in this test.

A good sportscar need to entertain the owner all the time---Before my silver croc, I had never own a car that can still keep me smiling for 3 years!
I think most cayman owners here bought their cars for its all round brilliance rather than just bhp/$ or laptimes. There are plenty of cheaper and faster cars out there!
However, if I have to pick one car on that list to drive for the next 12months; I would have gone for the LP560!

Where can you get that red stripe that says "Cayman S" ?
Looks perfect with white paint.

Re: Autoexpress performance car of the year 2008-our cayman s came second
Congrats on your new purchase. I'm sure you'll be quite happy with the 997.
I was at the Porsche dealership this morning to drop off my C2.7 for service. I had a few minutes before the shuttle departed so I walked around the parking and showroom. The new 997 looks great. Here is the thing though; the Carrera looks so damn serious compared to the Cayman. It's all business, without even a hint of fun. I remember the 993 and older Carreras used to make me smile when I would see them in traffic. The 997 doesn't do that. I certainly respect it and have no doubts about its greatness but it just isn't fun (in a cheeky sort of way).
The Cayman on the other hand is the best continuation of the old Carrera in my opinion. As the 60th Anniversary Car magazine article stated "the Porsche DNA shows clearest in the Cayman" (quoting to the best of my memory). In Cayman we Trust...
