Congrats, it's a great feeling.
I kept staring at mine after I brought it home. Still do a year later.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
My natural "car bug" and car enthusiasm led me to the purchase of my former CS. Not to mention the price was right.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
I had read a little bit about the car online and it seemed to combine two things I really love: the shape of the car and the mid-engine location.
I bought the car on a day that I needed a break from work, drove to the dealership and gave one a test drive. It felt like a natural extension of my body, very similar to a two stroke motocross bike.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
I have been wanting a 911 for a few decades. Owned a 914 for almost 15 years and loved the car. When the Cayman came out it seemed like the perfect blend of Porsche 911, plus the mid-engine 2-seater I still missed from owning a 914.
Once I walked into the Dealership and had a chance to see, touch, and drive the Cayman-S it was decided.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
Had an '03 Boxster S and was beginning to track it heavily. Then I saw an M3 hit the wall and roll at Mosport on a Friday - fortunately the driver and passenger were OK thanks to the hard top. On the Monday I traded the Boxster for an '06 CS.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
There is no way my Cayman S configuration would have come out as satisfying as it did without the knowledge and information available on this web site. My spouse did have an influence, and certainly the Porsche configurator did, but how the heck could I have possibly known to pay the exorbitant price for the XPA steering wheel, or that the leather door finishers were really important? Porsche (and the PCA, for that matter) should give this site a special prize, IMHO.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
I agree with blueone. I was in the process of purchasing a new 2009 CS (deposit for Feb build spot, initial option choices, etc) and used this site and member feedback to help refine/finalize my order. Don't have the car yet, but I feel like I was able to make educated decisions given the wealth of knowledge/opinions on this site. A few members pm'd me about specific questions, options, experiences, and I found that help invaluable. I always tend to have lingering "questions" when i make a large purchase, but I haven't felt any anxiety over this purchase...just anxious to get the car and drive the damn thing. I'm certain the drive experience and joy of ownership will only increase my opinion of how helpful this site was during that process.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
Here's one that I haven't seen anyone mention yet... I'm 6'4" and it's the only sports car that I can fit in with a helmet. Can't track my RS4 because with a helmet I'd be hitting the roof, forget the required clearance between roof and helmet.
Well done Porsche for actually keeping things like this in mind when designing fun cars!

...not to mention it was simply the most excellent car I had ever driven. It was simply so much fun to drive.
I'd like another one to replace my BMW but will have to wait a while. Meanwhile, this site serves as a temporary satisfaction to the urge while I wait. The fact the ride in the '09 is "better" than the '08s with the std. suspension (wouldn't spend the $$ on PASM, personally, though from what I read it is a great option), makes it even harder to wait (among the other improvements).

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
|
 |
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
Let's see...
Always wanted a Porsche. The body, the performance, the novelty of owning one... was always an attraction.
I've driven Boxsters here and there. Although I didn't mind the drive, it just didn't get me stoked.
My uncle called me up with a gnarly deal he had on a Cayman and I went in to test drive it... BAM. Right there I knew a Cayman was for me.
Its a great middle ground Porsche (performance and price wise), but still gets the looks of a damn sexy sports car!

test driving a 997 made me know I wanted a Cayman... I had intended on buying 997, did not really like the "feel" so tried the Cayman and BINGO.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
Having been an owner of several Porsches prior to the intro of the Boxster. I wanted another Porsche except this time getting in on a true MID engine layout. At the same time being able to purchase another ragtop and have both worlds at the same time without putting up my 1st born. My 1st love has allways been a MID engine layout. Not only are the handling characteristics better by having the engine between myself and the rear wheels. The coupe design itself offers so much more in the arena of structural stability. Or is it just having the engine a little closer to my ears so the sound is not lost to me. Being a pilot there is a heavy relationship between machine and operator that is fine tuned as a result of this. Direct transfer of info from the car and road is easier for a driver to maintain. I think it looks better, handles better and overall has more possibilities than most originialy thought. Look mom the 911 had a baby.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
In July '06 I read in WSJ about Porsche's improvements in reliability. Had a stopover in Sacramento, went to the dealership, drove a C2S, too GTish, then drove a Cayman S with PASM. I drove it for 15 minutes, my wife drove the return to the dealership and we wrote a check. It was delivered after a few mods. Still my favorite car ever.

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
I saw one. I wanted one. End of story.
Driving one of course reaffirmed the decision but by that point I was in too deep :-).
P.S. I think the poll is missing an option for "no influences, the car sold itself".

Re: Sources of Influence - Why did you buy a Cayman?
Owned a 1984 911 Carrera, had fewer rattles at 92K miles than my 2007 Ford Mustang. Went into the dealership to drool over the newer cars, sales person asked if I had ever driven the new Cayman, told him no had driven the 911 and Boxster. Offered me a test drive in the "S" with Tip, had him appraise my older car during our drive. Gave me a good deal on both the trade and the price of the car& financing.
The car was already spec'ed out, so I have no choice in the options. THe only things I might have changed were interior color from stone to sand and to put Porsche Navigation in (plays MP3s) vs the normal CDR-24 player. The thicker steering wheel can be done with a wheel skin and will protect the leather.
Funny story-- thought the 84 911 steering wheel needed recovering as it looked pretty bad, found it had a wheel skin, cut off the threads and found a pristine wheel underneath. Cleaned and leather conditioned it while a new wheel skin came in, put it on, looked fantastic.
The Cayman S has the Tip in case the wife wants to drive (she owns a Mini Cooper right now).
