Anyone notice the cayman on TG?

A white V2 Cayman made a brief appearance on new episode of top gear!

God, that thing was gorgeous

Yeah, and was rather rudely snubbed by Clarkson seconds later. I'm glad that he was thrilled with the Evora, I had been somewhat underwhelmed by it at first, but they passed up a great opportunity for a more detailed comparison.

Clarkson is nothing more than a comedian, hardly an automotive journalist.

Agreed. I've never heard him say anything positive about modern Porsches

Although he did like the 944.

Top Gear is nowadays a wider audience entertainment program. You have to take everything with a pinch of salt when they talk about cars, planes, trains, etc...

I met my West London OPC sales guy at one of the CS Gen 2 launch promos at Silverstone experience centre sometime ago, he happen to mention that James May popped into the showroom to have a chat about upgrading his old Boxster to a newer one.

I asked my salesman about why Clarkson isn't a Porsche fan. His reply (from James May's response) was that Clarkson actually likes Porsches (alot) but doesn't want to broadcast this on air as it keeps it interesting for the show!?!?

Factually I would rather listen to Tiff Needell from Fifth Gear...who got it right with his review of the CS.

Will be very interested to see their lap time with the Gen 2 CS and whether it will be done using PDK!

Re: Anyone notice the cayman on TG?

On the july issue of the british CAR mag,

there is a test between the Evora, the 911 and the M3.

Want to know how the article starts?

With big bold letters: WOT no cayman?

I really don't understand why people keep saying things like this. I don't mean to be offensive at all, I'm just saying these comments lead me to believe that you haven't seen him review any Porsches.

I am an avid TopGear watcher and Clarkson seems to be very fair and positive in every review he has ever laid down. The Cayman (Cockster) review seemed to ruffle everyone's feathers but, as all of his other reviews, was filled with tounge-in-cheek cynicism. He even admits:

Now I should explain at the outset that this car is rubbish I'm afraid. Terrible, there are many things that I would rather be doing than driving it. Including waiting for Bernard Manning to come off the stage in a sweaty nightclub and then licking his back clean. Sorry, I'm really only saying this cause the director who is shooting the film today has actually ordered a Cockster as a sort of investment.
Every review has been very postive:

Season 5 ep 1
Carrera S 997
If you just want something to pose around the harbor by, you'll pretty much hate it. But if you want to drive, it is spectacularly good.
Season 7 ep 2
Cayman S
The next good point is that it is a hoot to drive.
If you drive this thing well, if you really concentrate and just want to get around a corner as fast as possible, then it's as crisp as a frosty morning.
Season 9 ep 4
Turbo 997
It's amazing, because it's not just more usable than a Ferrari, more practical, but I think out here, in the real world with crests and dips and bumps, and blind brows, I think it's faster as well. I really do.
Even is his own DVD: SuperCar Showdown
911 GT3
If you wanted a user friendly, use it everyday supercar, all you had to do, once you had discounted the Honda NSX, was to decide which 911 would be best.
But his critisisms are normally the same ones that car guys have. In the Cayman review he stated:
So the Cockster then isn't quite as good as it could have been. I couldn't live with that. I like to think that a car has been designed to be as good as it can be, not just to fill a gap in the market.
I don't see that as a negative comment, I see it as a real world criticism and even I agree with it as I'm sure many of us "fanboys" do. I just choose to work around it.

Jeremy Clarkson is not a moron, but he does play one on tv. And he admits it.
I can never really relax in a hot 911 cause they have such a fearsome reputation for not tolerating fools. And I am a fool.
Anyway, I think the Clarkson bashing is a little played up. Or out of some peoples humor range. As others have said, it's an entertainment show about cars, not a car show that's entertaining.

Re: Anyone notice the cayman on TG?

Great Post cheerIO, couldn't find the quote but to add to your season 4 review of the 997 turbo, there is a part in that episode where he speaks to the acceleration and almost cracks his voice in excitement stating, "it takes all of 1 second to go from ~35-60mph" as he is sucked back into his seat.

Seemed like more work to put into a topic reply than I ever cared to make. I'm reminded of this:

Re: Anyone notice the cayman on TG?

So rather than spiral into a sinkhole of "What Is Clarkson", can someone bring me up to speed on what the comparisson was? Was it Evora/CSII shoot-out? Or was it a 10-second mention on the news-this-week?

A 5 second appearance on screen during the Evora test, no comparison, just Jeremy saying he'd rather spend 50 grand on an Evora than a Cayman.

Re: Anyone notice the cayman on TG?

I'm just waiting 'till about a year from now, all the 1st-gen Evoras start coming up with reliability issues.

For a company that until recently had problems with leaking interiors, it's a slightly tall order to try and break into the luxury side of the sportscar market.

I think I've seen 2 Evora vs Cayman S comparisons in British magazines so far (Evo and Perfomance Car I think). Both eventually plump for the Evora. One even said that Cayman steering feel was blunt compared to the Evora - if that's the case it must be something special! I think I'm with Pint of Brew on waiting to see how it hold up with longterm reliability though...
