Good News, Good News and Bad News

Bad News

Let's start with the bad news first. I went to get the GIAC programming and tuning done at IMagine Auto only to find that my ECU had a stored fault code (I think 4301) that refers to one of the cats failing a warm-up test. As such they cannot do ECU tuning until the ECU is clean so I have an appointment next week with my local dealership to get that issue resolved, then shortly thereafter get the tuning done. So long term no issue, just a short-term delay.

Good News Item 1

I paid a visit to wilhemy-it the makers of the Boxster/911 smart-top offering among other electronics for Porsches. Stephan took a look at the amplifier in my car (base radio) and discovered that there was NO fiber optic line running to the amp as there had been in my 05 Boxster with Bose. According to Stephan this should make it a lot easier to add an iPOD adapter so he's scheduled my car for a deep dive look the week after the4th of July. If it all goes well we may have a solution for non-Bose radios sometime shortly thereafter.

Good News Item #2

Also while talking to Stephan he mentioned that he is currently working on an electronics module that is plug and play for the 997 that he believes will also work on the Cayman (will test with my car) but what it does is a few different things:

1) You can set it so that you have to hold your key for 4 seconds (instead of .5 seconds) to pop the trunk, this would be an alternative to shaving your keys.

2) When you set or disable your alarm you can get 1 or 2 beeps from the horn as a verification.

3) When opening the front trunk you can continue to hold down the button to turn on the headlights (will auto shut off after a couple of minutes), handy when loading and unloading things.

Seems like there were 1 or 2 other items it could also do. He expects to have a prototype for the 911 sometime in July and will test on my Cayman but if it passes then will offer it for sale.

So that's my update for today, not 100% of what I wanted to occur, but some nice positives nonetheless and hopefully just a short delay.

Don't come back until you're ready to report that the Cayman S will receive the Carrera engine for '07!

The horn beeps when arming/disarming the alarm will be useful.
I feel so pretentious sometimes because I have to turn around and stare at my car when I'm setting the alarm to make sure it got set.

All those modifications sound great.

I agree with Aaron that audible alerts for arming/disarming the car would be the best. It is pretentious to have to stare back at your car to confirm that the alarm is armed.

Pretentious? Pretentious? In Germany, at least (my only experience so far), everyone else is staring at your car anyway so you fit in by looking at it too.You would seem pretentious by looking away!! We poseurs enjoy being associated with a great car.

Don't shave your key - just slip a piece of plastic sheeting between the contact areas - haven't had a problem since I did that...

Horn sound would be great. I find that in full sunlight I find it hard to see if the lights flashed or not ( the delay of few seconds does not help )

When I lock my Cayman, I can hear the solenoid and the lights flashing without having to look and see. I just set it right after I exit the car - not from 20 feet away. Its a pretty easy task. I don't feel that I should be able to selfishly sound the horn and annoy others ...

But then again, I also don't say EXCUSE ME at the grocery store when someone else is blocking MY way, while they are just doing THEIR shopping. It always seems to me that others have rights too. And that I can go around ... or wait my turn ...

I also hear the solenoid when I lock the car but I also hear it when I unlock the car and sometimes I'm not sure which one I'm doing so I have to look at the lights at make sure it's being locked.
It's not a huge problem, it's not like I mind staring at my beautiful car for a few extra seconds, I just sometimes feel like a jerk doing it when I'm out in public.
It's like look at me checking out my own car!

I never thought of it as though I was checking out my car. Instead, Ifeel like 'nice car...but the idiot doesn't know how to lock it'.
