Planning an oil change

I have a 2007 cayman and am planning an oil change here shortly (thanks to the extensive material available on this website) but thought it might be worthwhile to have a backup for both the oil drain plug and oil filter housing in case either were damaged for any reason. I haven't had to many problems finding everything i need but was curious if anyone knew where i might be able to find the oil filter housing? Is this something that is sturdy enough to not have any real concern over? Obviously this isn't something i perceive getting damaged, i simply prefer using the "better safe than sorry" approach when it comes to having a spare for any item that could leave me dead in the water if it were damaged. I'm assuming purchasing the porsche filter wrench would eliminate any such concerns?

It is sturdy enough to not have any real concern over. Do make sure that you have an extra o-ring for the canister though.

You should be able to find a filter wrench at your local auto store for significantly less than the porsche part.

Re: Planning an oil change

I'm not sure if it is on their website, but you can get the canister from Suncoast (sponsor). They are pretty sturdy, but I suppose you could crack it if you used the "strap" type oil filter wrench and over tightened the strap then used lots of force - or went the wrong way! Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

I've changed mine about 5 times and don't have a spare canister. I use the end-cap type wrench (14 flute 74MM (or 75). Very unlikely that will break it. Oh, don't overtighten the can on re-install. Hand tight and a little extra is good enough.

Re: Planning an oil change

Grab an extra drain plug and crush washer too, or get the LN magnetic one.
Did my first change two weeks ago and it was super simple.

Also be aware that the filter comes with the O-ring mentioned above.

Re: Planning an oil change

And be aware that oil comes out *fast*. It's like a quarter turn difference between no flow and a hot oil gusher.
