06 Cayman S or 08 335i coupe?
Hey guys!
I live in Taiwan Taipei. The terrific here is just horrible, Extremely bad. So everybody drives automatic here. ( of course there are some car enthusiast who drives stick ) I am thinking to pick up my friend 06 Cayman S like new condition. Fully loaded with navi, pasm, sport chrono, sport seats, 19" wheel and only 9k miles on it. But it's a Tiptronic. Or I can order a 335i coupe. Let me make this simple. The price of this 06 vs 08 will be very similar. I am always a fan of BMW. But I am also a 996 owner currently. I love Porsches I know all the new cars will release their dual clutch system next year and I am sure it will all smoke stick shifts. But sticks are fun to drive. ( prices will be high and I have to wait a while ) If I am going to order I will get the stick, sport seats, iDrive and black roof. Anyway, What do you guys think?
cayman s
handles better
unique in design
slower
less practical
nothing much to increase power
automatic for daily I'm sure it's no brainier
it's a Porsche, no substitute
335i coupe
handles pretty well
easy to tune
practical
low key
E90 is everywhere so as E92
at the end it's only a 3er not even a M3
Any inputs will be great! :cool!:

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
|
 |
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

you were on rennlist too?
if you want practicality: bimmer
if you want to drive: porsche, there is no substitute. i have had e30m3, e36m3, e46m3, e90 (not m3), other than the e30m3, it's not even remotely close.

yes I was
I am quote concern about the tiptronic on the cayman. PDK will smoke it. My guess is it won't be out until 09/10 face lift cayman. The price will be very high for a new car which is out of my budget. So my guess is having a tip cs is better than nothing. What do you think of E90?

when i was getting a new car, i had the same choices, either cayman or 335. but are you not sure about getting a cayman or 335 or are you not sure about getting a stick or automatic? i'm kinda confused by your thread.
anyways, i've lived in taipei before and i think it's a hard decision to make.
if you want "faster", better looking interior, 2 extra seats then go with the 335.
if you want "fun to drive" get the cayman. trust me.

A Cayman S is every bit as fast as a 335i coupe, unless you are comparing tip in Cayman to stick in 335i. As others have pointed out you need to buy what is best for your needs.

Yeah, that's why I am so anal about getting a stick or not. I'm more toward to a stick car also more towards to a cayman s. The thing is there's none cayman s here unless I factory order. (Expensive as hell and out of my budget) It's just my parents are pretty against me driving a Porsche.

Let me make it simple. If you going to drive a sports car, you will want a stick. I bought a new automatic 2000 C5 Corvette because I used it as a daily driver during the summer in bad traffic. During all those seven years I thought about how much I wished I had a stick. When it came time to replace my Corvette, I knew I had to have a stick. So when I bought my new CS an automatic transmission was never even a consideration. Now I happily row through the gears in any traffic and love it.

your parents? if they are a factor in your buying decision, then you should probably just take the metro.

This is a matter of wanting back seats or not. We really can't help you with the decision.

Ah, c'mon clubbers! What type of answer is 'depends what you need'. Jeez, what is this, Consumers Reports?!
This is the Cayman Club. The answer is 'get the Cayman'. Common sense, logic, fancies, leanings, attractions, etc have not a thing to do with this decision. Get the Cayman. If you want to hear 'get the 335' go to a Bimmer forum. If you want logic, like I said 'Consumer Reports'. And they will probably go 'neither, get a 1968 Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel'. Get a Cayman!

I drive a Tip Cayman, and its way more fun than driving BMW. The Cayman can be very fast, the handling no comparison, its a very very precise machine. Not only should you get the Cayman, you should also get it in GT Silver.

Yea, the 335 is an excellent car, but the Cayman S is definitely not slower. In fact, most tests I've seen have the CS edging it out just a bit in acceleration. Actually, if you go with the 335, I'd go with the auto, and that is something I thought I'd never say. That transmission works very nicely with the twin turbo setup. I honestly liked it more than the manual in that car.
Of course, not to be a, um, turncoat of sorts...I had to opportunity to check out a 135 the other day, and all I can say is Jesus Camesus!! The thing is like a little hornet. The best part is that I have heard that BMW will be offering a chip that augments the boost, bringing the HP to over 400 and the torque to nearly the same number. I do not think they are really advertising that yet, but the best part is that it does nothing to your warranty and will be installed at the dealership. i can't imagine that car with all that power...monstrous! I'd buy on of those and save a little dough. Well, unless you're going to buy a CS, of course. :-)

Honestly, I'd get the BMW if you have to ask. I don't mean that in a spiteful way, but Porsche is such an emotional non-sensical decision that if you're doing a real comparison the BMW will probably beat it.
My Cayman lightly optioned was almost $85,000CDN! That's a crazy amount of money when you think of the opportunity cost of what else you could buy. At the time, I was just thinking, "Oh my gawd I'm actually going to own a Porsche this is so awesome!" And I still love it, but now that my brain is a bit more rational I look around and what else I could of got and there are a lot of other INCREDIBLE cars out there there for that price.
Anyway, that said, this morning at 7 am my mechanic drove my car up to his shop and as it was driving away in the sunlight and the noise of it I just smiled and though, "I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!"

Here's my contribution to the topic since I was in this situation about two months ago.
I think most of the responses are good, here are just a few to ask yourself.
Do you want a practical Car?
Do you need to take more than one person in the Car?
Are you looking for a comfortable car (soft ride)?
Do you like fancy gadgets in your car (keyless, ipod)?
Do you hate attention?
Do you care what people say about straight line performance?
If you answered "Yes" to anyone of those questions, then get the 335.
Don't get me wrong, I love the 335, but I can only choose one.
In fact, I'm still pushing my brother to get the 335 coupe.
Right now, the Cayman S is the car that fills my needs
Cheers!

335 coupe is not bad but still, not a porsche.

Well I agree 50%, I agree about the part where Porsche is an emotional non sensual decision. But I dont agree about the real comparison part, perhaps BMW would have more gadgets, but I dont think it can beat the Porsche in any other aspect, just my :2cents
