So there was a thread like this last year but i'd like to open it with a poll.

I was at a dealer the other night trying to get a cayenne brochure since i'm looking to replace my suv and i a dealer told me that you can get a base 997 they had in stock for just over $5000 over out the door over a cayman S. My cayman S has artic silver, tipS, bose, xenon, crest, power seats so my sticker was just over 70 and they're willing to move their 997's at what looks like 1000 over and so its very close to my pricing. obviously, the pricing is only if you only had tipS but you just have to think.....

I didn't second guess myself when i bought my cs 3 months ago because I always thought to myself that if i ever got a 911, i'd get at least the s because of the added power. However, having driven the cs, i'm satisfied with the power so i don't think i need 385. The thing is though, i get asked quite often why i didnt' get a 997 and my usual answer was that it was out of my budget. So i never really thought about it much but recently, i've started to because of the price drops on current 997's and now because of the hype on the new 997's which *TO* me are minimal exterior changes. sure there's LED front and back but unless you're in the know, you can barely tell.

Anybody else second guess themselves? 20K over? Cayman S easy, 10K over Cayman S...5k over, secondguess....even pricing....poll time?

personally, i like that the cayman has the hatchback along with the frunk. on the other hand, the awkwardly-accessed rear area of the 911 is pretty sizeable so it's a toss up. it boils down to looks and the driving feel, both pretty subjective. the 911 is grace personified, although it seems substantially wider and longer than the cayman. the cayman has a tight tinyness that can be very appealing if what you want is die-hard sportscar fun; the 911 seems a little more for the (slightly) older set to me.

similarly equipped, if the 911's even lo-mile used and cpo'd and selling for about the same money, a few weeks ago i'd say "all for the cayman s"; after thinking about it more the past several weeks, that would be a tough call. i'd have to drive both several times to see what felt better and more liveable.

Every once in a while I wonder if I had waited longer/saved up more, would I have gone for a 997. I always come to the conclusion that the CS was the best choice for me, were budget not a factor I might have considered the GT3 or 997TT, but after test driving and comparing the CS to the "regular" 997 models, it was an easy decision. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed my drive in the 997 and can appreciate its performance and history, but the Cayman truly stood out to me as the car I wanted to drive every day.

Well I'm the kind of person who prefers the highest spec in a "lower" class than the lowest spec in a "higher" class. So I'd stick with the cayman unless I can afford a TT or a GT2

"Frunk"? Is that a shortening of "Front Trunk"? Interesting idea, if intentional (i.e., not a typo). May have to add that to the vocabulary....

To the OP, if you prefer driving a real sports car, stick with the Cayman. I had a chance to drive a 997 S a few weeks ago, and was kinda disappointed with how much of a soft luxury cruiser it was.

I looked at / drove all 997 models except the GT3 (decided I am not ready for that yet as far as driving skill... if I get serious about tracking and gain skill maybe in a few years I would try one), and as one poster above said, if you are looking for a REAL all out sports car, you go with the Cayman S. JUst no comparison. Turbo? no way. Fast as all hell, but so is a ZO6 or a viper if that is what you want. 997S? prety cool, but still feels bigger and less nimble / balanced than the cayman s. I chose the CS and not based upon cost.

But, you need to decide for yourself because the 997 is a GREAT car and every person looking for something different and it may be that it suits you better than a CAyman... you just don't know until you drive them...

Go with the one you LIKE, not the one you think you should have....

Base 997 wouldn't "do it" for me. 997 S (manual) was fun, easy enough to drive. My boy's 997 TT (TipS) is a joy to drive - smooth, easy for long trips, but it really is a GT (Gran Touring) type of car.

The Cayman S just "fits" me. Don't plan on tracking it but won't baby it either. Much more fun that the 997.

For someone who is interested in a tip I would think the new 997s would be very appealing because of the pdk option. Of course at $4k it's quite an up charge. I voted 997 btw as a street car.

The base 997 just wouldn't stand up to the optioned CS for me. Now a well optioned GT3 . . . that could be a different story.
