I hate to admit it but..................
.......after crashing my 08 speed yellow CS into a dude pulling a trailer with no lights or license, I am now thinking about moving to a 09 911.....
I love the looks of the CS but the 345hp and the ability to let the seats back further get me thinking about going this direction. I know the 09 Cayman's will be out in a few months with 320+ hp but the 911 with the chrono package is a great ride.
I wish the 911 had the side vents and hatchback of the cayman but the rear seats of the 911.....then it would be perfect. If I go the 911 route I will miss this forum...it is awesome. Is there one like this for 911 owners?
What do you all think I should do? I hate to wait several month for a Cayman with all the new hp and bells and whistles.

Don't underestimate the power of the Dark Side...
I think you should get whatever makes you the happiest. Test drive them back to back to be sure. (Means waiting until the new Cayman comes out)
BTW, no reason we cannot expand and start new websites for other models...

We had an '07 911 S (manual trans) which was easy to drive, handled well. Traded last year for '08 911 TT (TipS w/ Sports Chrono Plus and more options). Again, easy to drive and when the turbos spool up, sounds beautiful. The full-time AWD makes it handle like "it's on rails". I enjoy it BUT only the Cayman S lets me really FEEL like I'm driving and having fun. Since I don't need 4 seats, do need the extra luggage space, and didn't want to spend $100K+, the choice was simple. We've got the big Cobalt Blue "Baby II" when we need her; I'm ready to order my green Croc as soon as the sales rep says "It's a Go!" - I can wait til the spring...

i think you should get 911. but get the S, if you can afford it. they should be giving them away in this economy.
the suspension changes make the new 911 handle like our cayman, or very close. i do agree with the side vents, hatchback comment.

Buy the new 911 and then trade it when the 2009 CS comes out! Hey, you didn't ask for just reasonable solution's!?

I just drove the 09 Carreras with PDK. And I'm happy with my Cayman S. But were I in your shoes, having a totalled Cayman and the cash to get a new car, I would seriously consider a Carrera S with PDK.
I have driven a stick for my entire life, except for one automatic back in the mid 70s. And I'm open minded, though I don't switch easily.
That being said, the PDK is simply power on demand. It's amazing!

'09 Caymans?
Does mean that there will be a slew of new magazine reviews of that car? Anyway, I understand his sentiments, I think a lot of us Cayman drivers look wistfully at 911s, the most iconic of Porsches. But hey, mid-engine is midengine.

Re: I hate to admit it but..................
The 911, IMHO, is such a mixed bag. In some ways superior to the Cayman (the rear suspension architecture and LSD, and the structure of the Coupe feels somewhat stiffer, just to name a few), but some things about the 911 just drive me away (sorry for the pun):
1. The long snout. It wouldn't clear my driveway without some scraping, and in side profile it looks silly.
2. The short wheelbase combined with the drastically rear-biased weight distribution make it act funny over bumps. When the road is smooth you can't tell, but on rougher roads it seems to bob up and down, front to rear.
3. The rear seats are useless, and look funny. They look as dumb as the fake scoops and spoilers on a Mustang.
4. The interior, with the exception of a couple of additional gauges and a different dash shape, is nearly identical to the Cayman, for almost twice the price. Not that our interiors are bad, I love 'em, for the additional price of various 911 models I think there should be more differentiation.
5. For some strange reason the every Cayman I've driven has shifted better than every 911 I've driven.
Ya know, I've always wondered... was Porsche surprised by how the Cayman came out? Were they anticipating a "Boxster Coupe" and ended up with a 911 beater instead?

LSD - Limited Slip Differential
|
 |
A limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity.
The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.
