I have driven quite a few Cayennes.
With regard to the Cayman.... The emblem on the steering wheel is the same.
And that's about it. I think.

And that's a nice way of putting it.

Re: Has anyone gone from Cayenne to Cayman? Opinions?
I have both, and besides the obvious things (like one is a SUV with plenty of luggage room, while the other is a small two-seat sports coupe), the biggest difference I notice in going between the Cayenne to the Cayman is that I keep thinking the Cayman has PASM turned on when it doesn't.... the ride is that much rougher.
I never noticed how rough it was when I just had the Cayman by itself.
Going from the Cayman to the Cayenne, it just feels like you are up off the rode 5 more feet. And every corner you take hard, the Cayenne feels like it might tip over. Thankfully it never has, it just starts to slide. Surprising tight turning radius though.
Gas mileage is a bit better in the Cayman: 22ish vs 18ish in the Cayenne.

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
|
 |
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Re: Has anyone gone from Cayenne to Cayman? Opinions?
I've both as well. The difference is variety of uses, to my mind.
Cayenne: More passengers, more cargo, more size, more mass
Cayman: More fun
It really depends on your intended uses, but I will say unequivocally: As much as I like the Cayenne, it does not provoke the endless, goofy grin that the Cayman does.
Feel free to post some follow-up questions, it looks like a few of us are willing to share our thoughts.

Re: Has anyone gone from Cayenne to Cayman? Opinions?
Thank you for the feedback so far!
Ok, I have modded the Cayenne S : Evom intake, lowering links,Eibach antiroll bars, Revo mapping and cat bypass. (the rest of the mods are cosmetic and better stereo sound).
Its not slow by any means, and I manage to make it oversteer (Greek roads are quite slippery at places) but it is not exciting.
This summer i went to Monaco, amazing routes....but with the cayenne it was not so much fun.It was fast, but not so fun.
Now Im 31,single... and feel that I carry too much of car behind me.
Now Cayman S. I tested it. It oversteers fabulusly. It is full of communication. The cabin noise was ... quite loud(Cayenne remember) . I am concerned that it might be tiresome after a while. An amazing engine sound it is though! The suspension is quite harder.
Now that it is getting the facelift they make me a 20000euro discount on a new(pre facelift) CaymanS with Pasm and Sport Chrono (manual) among other options.
Can you see my dillema?

Re: Has anyone gone from Cayenne to Cayman? Opinions?
Yes, I see your dilemma.
Only you can decide if the Cayenne is overkill for what you need. I frankly never turn on the stereo in the Cayman unless a passenger requests it, and I've never grown tired of the engine sound. Others would probably be better placed to comment on the noise in a full day of driving, the most I've done in a day was 6 hours in the Cayman.
If you can borrow or rent a vehicle for the times you need more seats or cargo capacity, I wouldn't shy away from the Cayman because of interior noise. To me that's one of the best parts: Feeling completely involved in the driving experience.
Why not both?

I have both. If I were single and did not have two kids I would get rid of the Cayenne and get the Cayman

Re: Has anyone gone from Cayenne to Cayman? Opinions?
I owned an 06 Cayenne for 3 years and put 60,000 miles on it. It was, in my opinion, the most comfortable, reliable, and luxurious car I've ever owned. I sold it in September and bought an 08 Cayman (standard, not S). Differences are as you note: firmer ride, more road noise, and a bit less luxury. In favor of the Cayenne is the luxury and quiet ride. In favor of the Cayman is the sheer joy of driving.
I can say I do miss my Cayenne on occasion, but I would not exchange the Cayman for it. The Cayman makes me smile.
Perhaps one day I can afford one of each.

Wouldn't recommend hauling mulch in the Cayman.

I seem to get mostly Cayannes, as loaners ,when I take my car in for service. If I were to buy a truck, I think the base Cayanne has plenty of pep and is very economical at 20mpg average, when I drive it. Again for a truck that is pretty good. I also own a 4 cyl. PT Cruiser and that's what I get (20mpgs).
Cheers.
