I just extensively drove a Carrera S today.

It pretty much confirmed my perception that the 987 is a VASTLY better platform. Yes the power delivery and rear grip of the Carrera S is phenomenal, but to me at least, the rest of the driving experience was dull, particularly the steering which was no better than your average BMW to my tastes. The suspension is definitely working harder in the 911, it just isn't as poised or as precise. More of a GT car, something closer to a Corvette, whereas the Caymans are more roadster like, more agile. I can certainly live with less power and sublime steering/handling. I mean really, if power is that important, buy a Viper.

Wink Re: faster Cayman S 2008 Or 911 Carrera S 2008

Last 911 I owned was a 2000 Carrera S with the factory aero kit. I definitely like the Cayman S better and I think my 2007 with all the usual mods listed in this thread is as fast as the 2000 911 S, but probably not as fast as the 2009 997 version. It's hard to offset that additional 0.4 liters of displacement with bolt on mods and softwear, but there's no doubt the 987 is the better platform.
Porsche has done a great job keeping an obsolete design (rear engine) competitive on street and track, but you have to wonder why they still bother. Maybe they're looking at Ferrari who keeps the front engine rear drive platform (currently the 599) as the top of the line GT whereas their modern platform the mid engine 430 is the sports car. But note with Ferrari: they race the 430 not the 599 and when they build a streetable track car (Scuderia and Stradale) it's based on the 430 also. Wish Porsche would do the same and give us such a version of the 987.

Purchased my Cayman S in June '07. Have spent 2 years of shear enjoyment. But let's
be honest. The Cayman S is no Carrera S when it comes to performance. I cut my losses last Saturday and purchased an '07 997 S with 7000 miles on it. Certified and a true beast.

Kurt welcome to the site, please stick around and participate in our 997 forum discussions!

My answer on this subject is that the performance difference between both cars is small enough that the driver is going to be the biggest difference.

On the street the Carrera S is faster. If you track the car I agree with K-man if you install one of the LSD's. I like my 06 Cayman S but my friends 06 Carrera S is really fun also.
