Track Insurance

Has anyone checked with any carriers to see if we could take advantage of any group rates for track day event coverage? Had a discussion with a State Farm agent at our PCA de last weekend and he told me that all of their renewals will now contain specific language that excludes coverage for incidents that occur on any surface designed for racing. Seems the only solution is event specific coverage but as most of you know, this doubles the cost of a typical track weekend. That would have a profound effect on my ability to participate in 3 to 6 events per year.

I would love to see PCA or even PP take a proactive role in this issue and persue an affordable solution.

Re: Track Insurance

What you may be facing is a "rebating" (illegal in the insurance insdustry) issue to get some type of group rate. We insure our track car with WSIB Insurance (www.WSIBInsurance.com/de).

So what do they charge? Couldn't PCA work with these carriers? What if we had a sanctioned event that was approved by the carrier. Participants have the option to sign-up for group rate coverage. Seems to me this would enlarge the pool as well as reduce the risk since the carrier would have control over certain conditions through the sanctioning body.

Re: Track Insurance

I was disappointed to see State Farm go this way and as a long time customer makes me start to think about looking at other companies. From what I understand a lot of the other insurance companies are or have gone the same way. It would be nice if someone like PCA would get more involved in this and try and find someone to offer optional coverage for DE events like you mention. I think it would help members like me out because until I find another option I'm pretty much out of the DE game. I can't afford the risk of writing off a $60K car.

I'm telling you, a cheap Miata is the way to go, and can be just as much fun if prepped right. Crash it, and you can replace it cheap and transfer your good parts.

I agree . . . to a point. Not driving my Cayman on the track is not an option. But I would love to have a dedicated track car. Maybe that will be in the budget someday. In the mean time I agree with heckler although I intend to stay in the de game but just remain very careful.

I think it would be in PCA's as well as PCNA's best interest to help us get some relief. I think it's reasonable for the insurance companies to exclude track coverage. Come on, the odds are ALOT higher that you're going to have an accident when you're driving fast on a track. But the participants in these kinds of events are getting an education. The demos of the participants and the rules of the sanctioning body should reduce the risk. And if a carrier makes a reasonably priced policy available I think alot of us would spend SOME extra $ for the protection. But for me the current price is just too high.

I would agree on that ( and the thought has crossed my mind). Kind of a shame in a way. Many of the hard core guys have done just that.

Re: Track Insurance

Hey Guys,

You may want to turn to page 14 of the latest (April, 09) issue of Porsche
Panorama.

You will find an ad for track insurance covering HPDE events run by PCA, BMWCCA, and many independent groups.

The add lists the following web address for additional info:

HPDE Insurance Program

You can buy this insurance, stated value, per event. I will be instructing at a PCA event at Watkins Glen next month and found that I could get insurance for a couple of hundred bucks.

Bart, Pittsburgh PA, 08 Cayman S, Caterham Super 7 HPC

Re: Track Insurance

I actually have bought this insurance three different times. Very easy to do. Luckily no claims. $250 for a weekend is cheap but it does start to add up if you do 5 or 6 events. It is nice to have the peace of mind that you are covered just in case something were to happen. I think you can buy the annual coverage from another carrier but it runs about $1200 for the year.

One problem with the Locktonaffinity insurance is that they can not write for tracks in OH.

Kehr:

PCA events are approved by WSIB, but a group discount for any specific organization would still be considered rebating, I think.
