Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
Anyone going to this event? Anyone feel like adopting a newbie for a couple of days?
I am going and this will be my first ever track event. I am so excited I can hardly wait.

I've been thinking of going to an event at Thunderbolt, any comments on the track? Is the surface well maintained?

It's an awesome track, well maintained. Some very technical sections and some high speed sections. Great track for a CS

You will enjoy Lightning. The "Lightbulb" turn is a blast. Both NJMP tracks are new and abrasive. Do not run low tire pressures. Asuming you have Michelin PS2, try 36F Hot and 39R Hot. Cold pressure will be about 8# lower then hot pressure.

Bill - speaking of tire pressures, what is your latest thinking on 888 pressures? How low should I go?
thanks, Dave

Re: Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
I ran at Lightning 6/3, ambient temperature was 76. Tried 30F and 32R hot. Temperatures across the LF were 169 outside, 170 center, 179 inside. These temps were after a slight cool down. Last session I ran 31F and 33R. Earlier in the day, I was around 36F and 38R. I felt the car was better at the lower pressures.

Re: Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
Yes, there is fuel at the track and also fuel within 15 minutes of the track in Millville if you don't want to pay the track's premium price. I used almost two tanks of fuel the last day (5ea. 45 minute sessions) I was there.

Re: Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
WOW, WOW,WOW!!!!!!.. What an event. I can't believe that having this much fun is legal. A great event run by a great group. We got to experience two great tracks in two days. Thunderbolt and Lightning.
I will add more details later. I wanted to post a couple of pics. Bear in mind that I am NO Pistol Pete.
Can you tell I am a newbie??
Me and my ride on the rainy day at Lightning. I learned I like driving hard in the rain.
maxfrompa. Makes that Boxster scoot.
DaveD. I am sorry I did not get a pic of your rockin CaymanS. It was great to meet you.
You too Max. I hope we all get to experience another, drier event.

Re: Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
It did dry out. Thanks to you The rain stopped before lunch and the run before lunch started to get quick. Then I did one more after lunch and the track was only moist and the speed really started to pick up. I am simply amazed at how well this car handles on street tires even in the rain. I am also amazed at the Please Save ME ( PSM) I got the rear out once and the PSM came on and snapped me back in line.
Would love to see some of the video you got.

PSM - Porsche Stability Management
|
 |
While it can’t overcome the laws of physics, the revolutionary Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system does lend an added degree of balance and control to the Cayman’s mid-engine driving dynamics, inspiring surefooted confidence in corners and extreme situations.
A standard feature on the Cayman and Cayman S, PSM continuously monitors steering input, road speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration to calculate the actual direction of travel. If the car begins to steer off line, PSM instantly intervenes with precision brake inputs on individual wheels to help bring the car back onto the driver’s intended path.
If braking alone isn’t enough to correct the vehicle’s cornering line, PSM then calls on the Cayman’s engine management system, adjusting engine output as needed to help stabilize handling. PSM can also compensate in an instant for mid-corner changes in load resulting from deceleration or braking. When Sport mode is selected with the optional Sport Chrono Package, PSM’s threshold for intervention is raised, allowing for greater driver involvement. If you prefer driving without automatic PSM assistance, the system can be set to standby at any time. In this case, it will only intervene under heavy braking, where both front wheels exceed the ABS threshold.
For all of its technical ability, PSM goes virtually unnoticed in everyday driving situations, preserving the Cayman’s natural agility. |

Re: Schattenbaum region DE @ Lightning 6/17-18
It was great to meet you suhkoi!
The rain made the driving interesting, smoothness is everything. It showed me just what smooth driving is, very educational.
Both tracks were challenging in different ways. I will be returning.
See you around the track!
